PB Demo III findings
« on: July 01, 2014, 04:07:00 PM »
First of all, SPOILERS! For those who have yet to play.
.
.
.
.
.
Okay, I just finally started playing and I wanted to report my findings thus far. I'm sure some if not most or all of these must have already been addressed by now, but that's a risk I'm willing to take!

- Bad tile on South Figaro house exterior.
http://www.mediafire.com/view/myfiles/#d9cdfc8dh5rx8xp

- Right after the switch event about the train being aware (very nice touch!), the two bottom characters (Cyan and Shadow) instead of merging back into the party, they just became hidden instantly instead.
http://www.mediafire.com/view/myfiles/#s6vijjj2a592q86
(sorry, couldn't get a pic of them vanishing.)

- Says Sir Gilgamesh dialog box twice, the 2nd time is right after he leaves. Not sure if this is intentional.
http://www.mediafire.com/view/myfiles/#8h7ojrhjmr7m7aj
http://www.mediafire.com/view/myfiles/#l555bo9c9u0pzzn

- Extra space after 'You'. (can't believe you guys made us have to double-back through basically the first half of the game thus far just to get some damn lube! lmao, how sadistic.) It's a cool quest/event idea though, just highly tedious.
http://www.mediafire.com/convkey/670b/u2a625x3mthp1rsfg.jpg

- Mana Anklet's description bleeds over.
http://www.mediafire.com/view/myfiles/#3bfol6zmh2kohw3

- There is a noticeable lag after using the Item Arrange feature. If you press arrange and then try to quickly go right or left it takes about half a second. I'd guess that you guys must of added some code that takes a bunch of extra cycles to cause this lag. Or maybe it's all the new icons?

---

My personal observations.

- IMO class names like 'King' and 'Child' are too basic and are not really Class Name's. I mean, they are I guess, but since it's blatantly obvious that King Edgar is a king, and Gau is a child, then what's the point of reiterating that via class name? Just my 2 cents.

- The new tent event/actions, while cute, do take longer obviously than the fast pace normal tent routine, and I found myself turbo-ing through that after the first few times. I miss the quick old tent in other words lol.

- Music player is awesome, I'd like to not hear the pad beep sound when scrolling through the selections though.

---

It's an incredible hack fellas, I'm having a lot of fun and re-living FF6 in a fresh and better way. Love a lot of what you've done, and I respect the amount of time and commitment that has gone into it. It shows! Keep up the great work. =)

Oh wow, don't know how we never saw that one.

That's going to be my fault. I screwed up the event somewhere.

Several accessory descriptions do at the moment. It'll be especially apparent when you switch to wider fonts.

That...shouldn't be. Originally, the game used three loops to back up the inventory before sorting it. I optimized it so it only took one loop, and that code runs 62% faster now. I'll look into it.

The names we came up tried to say what they were, or what they did. IIRC, FF6A calls Gau "Feral Child," while Edgar is "Engineer." Gau's FF6A is no more descriptive than ours, except for implicating something sexual, potentially. This is one of those "can't win them all" scenarios. :hmm:

The new tent/cabin events only take place on the world map.

When it was designed, it was going to follow the rest of the menus in terms of layout and feel. The other menus we add in will follow the same style.

Thanks for the input. :childish:

Just to follow up on this a bit, the lag from the Arrange feature is actually about 1/16th of a second lag, sorry for the exaggeration on that. But it is noticeable.

And as for the tent event, that works then well if it's on the overworld exclusively! My bad on that.

EDIT: After looking more into the Arrange lag, I noticed that starting a new game here and doing it there is no lag and it is super fast. It seems to be when there are a lot of items in the inventory, or maybe it's a certain type of item(s), not sure. Maybe try and stack your inventory to max and see if you can replicate it on your side there.

no, that'd be "Virile Child".

doesn't the original game have a slight lag with large inventories as well?  or maybe i'm just thinking of Optimize in the Equip menu.

Quote
Or maybe it's all the new icons?

that could definitely impact things.  each icon type causes a 256-slot Item list to be iterated (albeit skipping most of the code for blank slots).

Honestly the lag is so slight I doubt anyone would even notice it as an issue. Totally makes up for it with all the nice item icons! Compared to the original though it is just that slight little 32nd-16th of a second pause. I noticed it because I'm constantly arranging my items like a smoker flicks their cigarette lol.

- In the Opera House, entering the Stagemaster's room to the left before the timer event results in a bad entrance, putting the character two spaces too far left, into the wall like that Twilight Zone episode.
http://www.mediafire.com/view/myfiles/#xxxbbcw3lb9ljhk

It is fixed though for the Ultros event.

- If you fail at the opera house and it kicks you out, if your characters were poisoned, they still will be poisoned outside. This is normal I'm sure, but I would think it would be better to have the status's removed for a clean slate kinda thing imo.

- On my second go at the opera house I noticed a bad party merge resulting in the camera being off. It was hard to reproduce, but I got it here.
The video is unlisted.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lY3Rp7MQoMg

I'm not sure exactly what triggers it or if it's in the original. Maybe holding a directional button while the party merges. I thought it might be holding B for turbo while talking to him, but I tried without and it did still. It also doesn't seem to be an issue of which spot Locke is in.

- When entering the relic shop side of the cafe in Albrook, the music is cut in half as is should be, but opening the menu and back makes it full volume.

- Magitek Factory character specific text is wrong - called my Sabin and Locke 'Celes'.
http://www.mediafire.com/view/myfiles/#ao5a3r0x626t3uy
http://www.mediafire.com/view/myfiles/#5p8io4a4xvvxml6

- Can enter the Magitek Factory again right after the train cart ride... The text boxes are there again and it's shaking. There's no way to get through it this time due to tiles being changed.

- Question: Is Maduin supposed to have auto sprint? Without holding B that is?

G'ah, I thought I fixed all of those. :bah:

Yeah, I don't think we touched what happens when you fail. Noted. Perhaps failure should be everyone's HP = 1, and MP = 0 (essentially forcing you to use a tent).

Interesting.

Huh, that might be a vanilla bug, too.

It's referencing Celes, who is in the party, not just who is in the lead slot. Dialogue all throughout the game does it, but most of the time the party splits up.

Quote
- Can enter the Magitek Factory again right after the train cart ride...
That, however, should not happen. Either that or unbreak it so you can leave again?

Quote
- Question: Is Maduin supposed to have auto sprint? Without holding B that is?
If you refer to the flashback, then yes, he always had that on.

Been playing some more here, found a few more things worth mentioning.

First of all, the 'you know who' comical boss fight/event in the Sealed Gate was super epic and I loved every second of it! Secondly, the banquet scene was SO MUCH better now, with all the different answers to the questions. Very well done on that, it felt very interactive and really made me think about questions, and then wondered what he might have said if I choose another.

Now, for some issues. Again, you guys may have already taken care of some or all of these:

- Right after the night time scene with Locke and Celes in Albrook, after waking up in the INN the happy normal town music is playing until you go into the menu or step outside of the INN (map reloaded).

- Singing Mountain song the wind track can gets knocked out when scrolling items (holding down or up), in other words the sound effect of the item scroll takes precedece over the wind track and since the wind track is one prolonged note it doesn't come back in until after a battle. Another example of this is when Ultros drops down, that sound effect knocks it off also. And also the save point sound effect. Not a big deal, just a heads up. Might want to remove the wind track.

- The large monster text dialog when the airship is under siege by the epsers, Setzer says: forget that, what's with that vibration? The dialog bleeds over past the box to the right. There may be more instances like these but this one I noticed, been kinda skimming over the dialog as to really experience it when the hack is done and released.

- Why does Leo look like Exdeath after Kefka attacks Thamasa? Intentional?

- During that attack, when you have control of Leo, Kefka seems to stop his looped laughing command and look up once in a while, also, one time he looked up and never looked back down, and talking to him like that wouldn't trigger the event. Something's going on here with the entrance event. Also, talking to the magitek armor guy to the left directly yeilds a text box of No...no, Relm! Stop! And then the event froze. Talking to the bottom one just froze with no dialog. Same with top.

- Obviously you guys are still working on that, as well as the IAF part, and I'm guessing this is about where the demo wraps up unofficially since on the Floating Continent the 2nd to last switch before Atma (by the save point) froze the game.

Also I forgot to post this one on my last post at the Opera House:
layer issue in this doorway:
http://www.mediafire.com/view/ogtq0leuwvs6r8m/bad%20layer.bmp

And a couple others:
Sealed Gate background palette issue upon first entering (right before Kefka fight):
http://www.mediafire.com/view/ppmd2oflw0m884a/sealed%20gate%20entrance%20event%20palette%20issue.bmp

Some more monster dialog spillage over:
http://www.mediafire.com/view/10ec4fvm48f5yzz/PB%20DEMO%20III_00007.bmp

Why is Gau here saying Locke's name lol?:
http://www.mediafire.com/view/wg389hgjm4bcc1v/PB%20DEMO%20III_00011.bmp

One other very minor thing is if you bring just 1 character to the banquet, Gestahl when Celes shows up says "you all look like you've seen a Ghost" and it's just Cid and the 1 character he is saying "you all" to, so it sounds wrong. With all that dialog you guys seem to have at your disposal you could sneak a caseword in there and have another dialog if it's just 1 character, or whatever's cleaver.

Anyways, great demo I had lots of fun here playing and checking out all the work you fellas have put into it, and am really looking forward to the next installment. =)

Bumping this in case you missed it in your absence, Lenophis. I enjoyed the feedback you offered towards my findings last time =D

Also I was wondering... Is there a credits listing somewhere for who did what for Pandora's Box? I'm curious out of your team who did what and how much.

Thanks!

The credits is at the end of that insane readme file. You know, that thing nobody reads. I'll get to the points you brought up at a later time.

Oh, that thing?! I would have never thought to look there!

Looking at the readme now though what I really meant is I'm more interested in the work you guys did (You, Dragonsbrethren, King Lettuce, Imzogelmo). Is it all four of you that share/do the work load for events, dialog, etc.? Mostly you? Joint-team effort all around? Who's since of humor am I reading throughout the dialog, which one(s) of you coded X event, who coded the music player and other new features, kinda thing. I'm nosy like that I s'pose. :lungs:
