Hello, everyone. I recently achieved the impossible--I successfully hacked FFVI, making a grammar cleanup patch, for the first time. It's all thanks to Lord J and everyone involved in FF3usME. Anyway, that's not why I'm here.

I decided I wanted to mess around with Master ZED's new game + patch, and much to my surprise, it seems like it doesn't work.

What the patch does is, once you speak to the man in the Beginner's Classroom who is behind the front desk, you're asked, New Game +? Of course, when you choose Yes, the game freezes and kind of artifacts for half a second, then the screen goes black indefinitely.

So, what gives? I don't know Master ZED too well, so I don't know his type of humor or personality, but I was wondering, was this patch created as a prank, maybe? Or was it never tested? Did I apply it wrong, somehow? Or does something happen in the process due to modern technology...?

I've tried headered, unheadered, (Unheadered just makes the game artifact on startup.) v1.1, v1.0, clean, hacked--nothing. It's all very peculiar.

ZED wouldn't release a patch as a joke to the internet. Chances are it's not patched correctly. Or, more accurately, the dialogue changes are what caused the problem. IPS patches are very fickle. Because of your dialogue changes, it is almost 100% certain that ZED's NGP patch will not be compatible with your work. You had this problem with manulowe's "mega patch" back then, too. Have you tried it on a vanilla rom?

Funny you should bring up ManuLoewe's patch, I'm hoping to make his obsolete with this one. For starters, I'm not working off v1.1, which is really stupid.

Anyway, it's good to know that Master ZED isn't a jokester with patches, at least! Thanks for the confirmation. But regardless, yes, I tried a clean (vanilla, unmodified, unhacked, unedited, not touched, however you wanna say it.) ROM, both 1.0 and 1.1. No dice.

Unless the ROMs I got were actually secretly hacked, which I suppose I shouldn't discount. You never can be too careful on the internet. I'm wondering now if it wasn't because I patched it with Lunar IPS. Apparently, some folks had a problem patching Project II due to not using Lunar IPS.

Well, I just tested this patch (for the first time even!) and it works just fine. Maybe some hashes of before and after will help.

Well, after scouring the 'net for a ROM that would work, I've come to the conclusion that ZED's New Game + patch is just incompatible with most common dumps on modern sites. Not a single one out of around 30 or so that I tried had matched the MD5, SHA1, or CR32 provided. Thank you for your help regardless, Lenophis.

I don't know if it will help, but NRST is great for looking at lots of roms quickly.  Also, are you sure you have a version with a header?  Some emulators will remove the header, maybe that's causing the problem?
