I'm confused...
« on: April 06, 2009, 09:47:56 PM »
I've been trying to do research on playing imports/emulators on my PS2 without needing a modchip.  So far all I understand is that you need a boot dist or memory card exploit and some odd PS2 disc tray card thing to pull the tray open.

So in plain english can I play imports and emulators without needing to phyiscally open my disc tray.  Or should I buy a PS2 slim just for the top loading disc tray?

Yes. Google FMCB and ESR.

Note that they have limitations, and most emulators for the PS2 kind of suck.

There are PS2 emulators?
Are they better than, equal to or worse than a real PS2?

Will they play SNES and Genesis better than the PSP?

Nooooooooo. There's not nearly as much dev work on the PS2. It really only ramped up within the last two or so years. There is a port of snes9x in the works. Check out psx-scene's forums for more.

Odbarc, we were talking about homebrew emulators that run on the PS2. However, PS2 emulation does exist. the main emulator is PCSX2. It's still got quite a way to go, however.

I know of the Xbox 1 having emulator abilities. I didn't know PS2 could as well.

I know of the Xbox 1 having emulator abilities. I didn't know PS2 could as well.

If you can program it somehow, it can do emulation. It's all a matter of how much of the platform is known, speed of the platform and if it's a bitch to program.

The X-Box out of the three last gen consoles was the best to do emulation with. The PS3 is with the current gen simply because of the linux capabilities... Though the Wii is decent too I suppose. I believe with the clock speed bump it's got a more powerful CPU than the X-Box, though not by much. I imagine the higher RAM would make it easier to do emulation for big ass SNES games or stuff that needed chips.

I hope one day someone manages to come up with an original SNES emulator for it rather than Yet Another Snes9X port. It gets tiring, and SNES9x has a crap load of problems...

I prefer ZSNES myself but I find that a lot of roms are for the SNES9x. I hate it and their .7z or .z7 files. I forget exactly. Not sure if I can convert them to regular .smc files.

7zip files are just compressed files. You can uncompress them with any number of tools, including Winrar. It is NOT an SNES9x format in the least.

Uncompress it and boom you have an SMC file.
