If you combine Fire+Ice resistance in the form of Ice Armor+Fire Shield or Fire Armor+Ice Shield, you should be resistant to both elementals. This is half true.

If an physical attack were to contain fire or ice elemental (Yang's claws for instance), you would take 2x damage.

If you follow my rules on elemental physical weakness, this is still true with character equipment. What's worse is that this behavior extends to the Protect Ring, Adamant Armor, Dragoon armor set, Crystal Helmet, and other equipment and combos that protect against Fire+Ice elementals.

That's something to think about if you are planning on using elemental attacks on enemies in a hack.

It's not really a botchup... it's more like an oversight. It doesn't quite matter since enemies don't have an elemental attached to their attack. See, the algo behaves "as expected" in the SNES version.. but the only time you would normally worry is if Cecil or Kain are charmed and have equipped a Fire/Ice Sword/Spear and whack others that have Ice+Fire resistance.

I did my testing in the US version of FF4A (I only have access to the US codes). It is most likely that the Euro version will be consistant with the US GBA version, rather than the SNES version.

Perhaps I'm misreading your post Entroper but fire-elemental armor is weak against ice and ice-elemental armor is weak against fire.

See, the manual is actually correct on one thing. Fire Shield/Armor implies Weak vs Fire AND Resistance vs Ice. Ice Shield/Armor implies Weak vs Ice AND Resistance vs Fire. You can Peep/Scan yourself to confirm this. This behavior applies ONLY to equipment... not enemy resistance.

In equipment such as the Protect Ring which houses both resistances, it is equivalent of equipping a piece of a Fire resistant armor and an Ice resistant armor.

Yea... I guess, but it is to make the game interesting. The side effects as I've describe are the less-obvious oversight...

Just out of curiosity, have you tested the behaviors of other elements in terms of inverse weakness?

For example, the Diamond equipment is all resistant to Lightning, but does it imply a weakness to some other element?

No. It would have been picked up by Peep/Scan.

The WSC version happens to have it more like the SNES versions (physical weakness to Fire/Ice while equipped with Protect Ring)... so FF4A was the first version to change it.
