HDD / USB Storage ... my my my how things have changed
« on: September 22, 2009, 03:10:02 PM »
I was in Fry's Electronics the other day and saw some 16GB USB flash drives for like $30 and 32GB for $50.  I was at Walmart today to shop for various items and saw a Sandisk Cruzer 8GB for $20 so I had to pick it up.  About 2 years ago I bought what was at that time the high end 1GB Sandisk Cruzer for $50, then last year I bought a 4GB for $40.  And even 5 years ago I bought a 128MB which was the second highest available next to the 256MB for $30.   I cannot believe how much space they are putting on these things and how space is getting cheap again.  Seems every 7-8 years harddrive (and in this case flash memory) gets dirt cheap.  Hell, yesterday ay Fry's there was a Hitachi Deskstar 500GB for under $50 and a 750GB for under $70.  I saw a 1 TB for $89 and a freaking 2TB for $169.  I'm seeing 250GB Western Digital drives for $49.

Isn't this just insane?

Size has increased dramatically, but overall speed has not scaled at the same rate. The same can be said for RAM.

Maybe the speed at which physical harddrives can read/write is limited to the hardware technology.  In other words wait until solid state harddrives become more mainstream and you'll see speeds increase.  I doubt a typical magnetic motorized arm style harddrive is going to ever successfully (or cheaply) achieve more than 15,000rpm without exploding.  haha
