I wouldn't call 50-60k HP per piece on the final boss low per se
I'm sorry but its very, very LOW. Compare this number to Safer∙Sephiroth (FF7) - up to 400k. If you check Sephiroth HP modifiers, they change by a margin of 30k, which is half max posible HP in FF5. I'm not going even to mention how much HP has Ruby or Emerald ...

It's not like they could have gone much higher with the 65.535 HP cap.
There is an easy fix .. add 1 byte and voala.

I'd say overall the biggest flaw is the importance/power of the level stat.
I really hate to argue with personal preferences, but c'mon m8, this is one of THE BEST feature of the whole FF series. In FF size ... I mean level does matter :D

And that is a common sense, not just among FF fans. Have you played some of facebook MMOs? I played one and on level 300 I was much stronger then people with level 1000+. Actually in many of these games its BAD to level fast, because you are weak for PvP. Why? The problem is: level doesnt matter (or has a minimal influence). But common players rush to level up ... because they would expect the opposite :)

Again you are sliding on the wrong curve: lets rework the whole battle-engine ... for what? To not kill fast boss XXX. Its much easier and convenient to add some HP here, change some levels there

Gaming Discussion / Life is Strange
« on: June 26, 2017, 05:12:07 AM »
I don't know how may of you play other titles of Square or at least other then jRPG, but recently I stumbled upon this GEM.
Its been years since I last played adventure games (my first love). I have stopped because many of the post Point&Click adventures missed the mark - the balance between puzzle solving and story telling.

Anyway "Life is Strange" is more like visual novel, but not as Tale Tales ones where your interaction and action mean almost nothing (so you have a feeling you watch a movie, not playing a game). Here every action have a consequence. Also the game has great balance between video and user input is so great balanced, that in the end you feel like smooth watching a video, yet the satisfaction of played a video game.

This year we can expect 2 new titles around Life is Strange - a sequel and a prequel :)

P.S. If you have played the game, please share your experience. Also if you hadn't you can get Episode 1 for free, but be warned - you will want more :D

Final Fantasy V Research & Development / Re: Restoring monster count

OMG I didnt even know there was counting in the original game :D
So I watched a video of gameplay on original (J) and yes, there is counting  :cycle:

Sure, you can always reach somehow a Lv5 compatible level, the question is just how much effort is needed.
Exactly. In general FF5 boss design has one major flow - low HP. Pretty much each boss can be killed in 1-2 turns without Lv XXX tricks.

So should we nerf each skill that make it possible? Of course NO. If that is a problem, we better focus on it rather 'healing' the consequences of it :)

The biggest "natural" enemy group I know of has 6 of those Puroboros bomb enemies and a quick search found no enemy formation that even used the 8th slot.
Correct. No 8 slot battle. There are couple of 6 slot - 209, 270, 467. There are couple of 7th slot battles, but we will never see all 7 on screen at the same time - 101, 447, 495, 501; GBA only - 629, 597

I was always wonder, why they dont use all 8 slots. Maybe they have experienced similar crashes and made 'soft' lock up to 6. Your idea of having random is interesting. FF1 & 2 heavily rely on random numbers, while FF5 is strictly predetermined.

P.S. I wonder what cause the crashes ... is it software bug, is it some 'hidden' limitation of the GPU. Will the game crash if we use contemporary powerful PC? What about a different emulator?

Final Fantasy V Research & Development / Re: Inventory Sorting
« on: June 22, 2017, 01:36:02 AM »
Looking in the original code, I don't understand:

1. In the end of the sorting, what exactly this code does:
Code: [Select]
C2/E0A1: 98           TYA
C2/E0A2: 1A           INC
C2/E0A3: 29 FE FF     AND #$FFFE
C2/E0A6: A8           TAY
It seems it make sure, next section always starts at even address (last bit 0) ... but whats the purpose?
so that a new category starts on the left side, like a linebreak

item item
item <empty>
weapon weapon
etc.
Hehe I was thinking about that, just rarely use sorting and haven't observed that behavior. Nice one Praetarius5018

2. What info we have in $288A? ($640 holds ItemID, $740 - hold quantity of the item)

3. Items with ID: 0, 1 and $80 are skipped. Is there any specific distinction in these values?

It seems you are not retired from doing romhacks just Final Fantasy IV ones. :cybez:

Yea, probably not going back in to Final Fantasy IV for a while.  But who knows...
So what is your game now, JCE3000GT?

Final Fantasy V Research & Development / Re: Inventory Sorting

Yeah no sorting at all. TBH sorting will be a hard task. If we sort by ItemID, items are mixed. If we try Alphabet sort, we will need a separate table because internally the game doesnt use ASCII. We can solve both problems by a table with priorities (what we consider first, item, second,..), similar to what noisecross suggested. By using different tables we can achieve different types of sort, including different languages/translations.

P.S. Does anybody know what info is in $288A (LDA $288A,x)?

The window editor is based in LightPhoenix's research. I don't know more than him.
Hehe, modest as usual :D

Final Fantasy V Research & Development / Re: FF5e Map Editor
« on: June 20, 2017, 01:46:53 AM »
Any updates to this?
Not really. When I developed this editor, my main goal was to understand how maps work to fix the map/location related bugs.
Currently, all these bugs are solved and I am focusing in playing games instead of editing them
Welcome back, m8. I hope we will see you around more often

162
Thank you samurai goroh!
I was thinking to do it myself, but I still hope noisercross will come back and do it himself :)

163
interesting, there's a 1.6 now, I just had a 1.02

my google-fu got me at least this:
https://github.com/noisecross/FF5e_Text_Editor

but then I never compiled it myself, so where else could I've gotten it,
ah this is confusing...
The source was released on github right before last version was ready. The only 2 versions 1.5 and 1.6 I had seen is here on slick - as attachments to a thread. Unfortunately his 2 excellent projects - Text Editor and Map Editor were never added to Wiki so usually people stumble on them by chance or if its been pointed out by somebody :(

164
Hey ScarabEnigma, welcome to slick ^_^

As far as I know you are right, there is no FF5 text editing tool, except the one that samurai goroh pointed.
Just in case you miss the link, here is direct link

P.S. If you have any questions don't hesitate to ask, there are plenty of good and knowledgeable folks around that will try to answer to the best of their abilities!

There was a great game from Blizzard that was released as free for DOS (not sure about consoles):

If you havent played it, I'm sure you will enjoy it :)
