FFV Enhanced by Dark Knight Kain (Dragonsbrethren)
« on: August 25, 2011, 08:20:11 PM »
Could Dragonsbrethren or anyone else provide us with some details as to what this hack exactly does?

Also, could someone provide link to or upload the hack in IPS format? All I can find is links to patched ROMs.

 :edit:
This hack changes the menu font, default main character name (to Bartz), icons added by RPGe (back to original) and some job/ability/item names.

Judging from this page, it seems like a translation patch.

As for getting the .ips file, couldn't you simple use a tool like Lunar IPS to generate it?

I could, but I generally try to avoid re-creating patches from ROMs. If the ROM files have been altered in other ways, you could get unexpected results.

In my opinion, finding the original files would be the most reliable thing to do. However if we fail to do so, re-creating would be a possibility.

I don't remember anymore. Probably changes the item icons back to the ones from the original game (no idea why they were changed for the translation patch; new ones are terrible), maybe it fixes some similarly changed item names as well?

Judging from the screenshot, it seems to also change the font. I'm going to test the hack a bit to find out more.

By the way, do you happen to have the IPS file?

(no idea why they were changed for the translation patch; new ones are terrible),

We did that because we needed a way to convey distinctions between items that would otherwise have the same name, due to their English translations not fitting in the space allotted.  I wasn't skilled enough at the time (1997) to actually rearrange the windows.  I actually made a test FF5 hack a few years ago that rearranged the item menu's layout to be a single column like the US FF6.  This would have allowed better results without the item icon changes.

The menu font was just copied from the Ted Woolsey version of Final Fantasy 6.  I believe that the new icons were mostly copied from FF4.  :celosa:

Nah, those changes aren't what I was talking about. Adding more icons for different item types made perfect sense because of the limited space.

Earlier versions of the patch only did what you said (but had an untranslated ending, along with typos in the script and other mistakes/oversights that can be expected from an earlier version), but the latest release completely changed some of the icons for no apparent reason. The magic and status icons come to mind, I think some items too. It wasn't a big deal, but I always thought it was completely unnecessary change and it was easy enough to change back.

Here are the icons that were changed (not added) by RPGe.

By the way, I am looking for the first version of RPGe's translation. If anyone has the raw IPS, or a patched ROM, please let me know.

Reading through the text file that comes with romhacking's patch, it seems I've played with that version so I should have it somewhere, as I can clearly remember that the ending was messed up...

Just for guidance, these are the versions released:
Quote
v1.10 (10/17/98):
- Updated this file a bit
- Patch file has been fixed to reflect spelling fixes

v1.01 (06/18/98):
- Officially posted on RPGe
- Updated this file a bit
- No change to actual patch, sorry

v1.00 (06/16/98):
- The Ending
- Job names
- Completed script
- Long item names
- Fixed up bugs
- A few other random things

v0.96 (10/17/97):
- First public release.
