Possible to use 3 or 4 bitplane gfx instead of 2 bitplane?

How would one go about changing say the 2 bitplane font to 3 or 4 bitplane to allow more colors?  I'd like to see if the game's menu font can get more color (icons mainly).  My graphic and assembly hacking skill is still is at a novice level so forgive my noobish style question.  :)

The FF6 mod I'm working on will need some changes that I will need some help with and I know the members here and on the FF6hacking site have the skill and knowledge to get me pointed in the right direction.  ;)  Any help is greatly appreciated.

I'm not entirely sure there is enough concurrent VRAM to pull off 4 bpp tiles for the FWF. Beyond that, you'd also need to potentially expand whatever palette is in use for whatever colors you want. I don't know which, if any palettes in the menu are free.

Hmmm, ok I kinda of figured as much.  Well let me ask you this.  Instead of say for example "GP" could you point to another set of higher bitplane tiles to use?  I was thinking about maybe making some colorful little icons instead of text for a few menu items.

I'm not an expert on FF6, so this might not be applicable.  However, in FF5 there is a function that allows tinting of printed characters on the menu screens.  While it's only used to print in grey and white, it can be used to print in other colors.  If FF6 has a function like this, and there's an empty space, you might be able to use them together to do what you're looking for.  Alternatively, you might be able to copy the character-printing command and change the address to point to another set of characters.  I haven't tried anything like that though, so I don't know for sure if it would work.  As a final choice, there's probably a way in the menus to display sprites (ie, portraits); you could use that function or an altered copy.

FF6 does let you change the color of text, but that won't increase the bit depth of the font.
