Am I the only one really unimpressed with this so far? I mean, I don't own a PSP, but I've seen the screenshots and the videos, and it just...isn't impressive. It's the European FFIV GBA with new graphics. I haven't played much of it either, but the DS version seems to be better.
Hacking is hard.

It stays true to the original. Which I believe was the intent. The DS version reinvented the game and that seemed to make a fair amount of people disgruntled, myself not included in that, so they decided to go back to the roots. And this would be just another port if they didn't include The After Years on it as well. Being able to play The After Years at any time (in America) has a nice feel to it. It seems as if it was made to be played that way (likely because it was) and it also gives another venue for those who don't have a Wii to enjoy The After Years. As much as I would have liked to have Augments and the new scenes in the classic 2D perspective its not a game breaker for me.

I don't know, I watched a video and it definitely looks easier to me. (And the long load times for music are annoying.)

As for the DS version being better, matter of opinion. Ideally it would've been nice if they ported the DS version visually (maybe up the texture quality a bit; polycount seemed fine) but kept the gameplay of the original. I didn't really like any of the changes the DS version made, outside of the simple things like giving songs a menu instead of being random.

I've played through the whole thing and it does seem a bit easier.  Even TAY seemed easier.  It doesn't seem like a lot of enemies get their attacks in as quickly as they used to.

Hmm, were you playing at max speed and ATB on? I noticed that enemies still seem to get more than their fair amount of turns when played in that way.

Though as for it seeming easier, I think part of that may be because of the process of doing it again. When taken on the first time things are often more difficult, but upon repeated attempts seem to be a fair breeze to the first.

Though as for things actually being easier. Apparently they did make the game prior to the shipwreck easier to ease in new players apparently.

Yeah I play at max sped.  I guess maybe my judgment was influenced by the game prior to the shipwreck.  I hadn't heard that segment was supposed to be easier.  I noticed a change right from the start.  I had decided to try for some summon drops before heading to Mist and found that none of the enemies never even attempted an attack before the battle was over.  This was normal in the SNES FFII release, but not in any other FFIV release I've played.

On a side note, I find it annoying that when you go to save it is automatically on the last file you had saved on.  I had finished the crystals and decided to finish Rydia's Tale, since that was the only tale I hadn't finished on my first run.  I wasn't thinking at just hit the accept button when saving and save over my only Crystals file, and I had yet to check out the extra boss fight.  I'd prefer if the game defaulted to the last file you loaded up until you have saved again.

The extra boss was kind of lame.  I did lose my first attempt because I hadn't leveled most of my characters.  After a small amount of levelling, I easily won.  The thing hardly does any moves before I kill it.  I had to fight it a second time and sit and wait on the second portion to do all its summons so I could fill out my bestiary.

Small gameplay question, how are arrows handled? I know The After Years treated them like FF4DS where you only needed one per character and it never ran out. Same thing with this port?

Nope, Arrows are as annoyingly quivered as ever before. I swear there seems to be less room in this version. Not sure why I feel that way, Ah well, at least TAY still maintains its infinite Item space.

I only ran into problems with inventory space when I got to the Lunar Ruins.  I ran out of room in the Interlude because I was holding on to almost everything since I didn't know what to expect.

* Paladin floats up from the depths of the FF4 development board...

As a huge FF4 fan I couldn't resist this release and have been playing it over the last few days (had to actually buy a PSP...)

First off I honestly didn't mind the random story embellishments of the DS game, but I thought they were rather pointless. I mean there were so many things they could have chosen to add to the game in terms of actual game play and events rather than revealing Golbez's real name or that the King of Baron had a thing for Cecil's mom. I mean that stuff is interesting but whatever. Can we EVER get a decent view of the Tower of Zot? I mean something like the floating fortress in FFV would be great! Anyway, I guess the game play stuff like the augments and whyte and what not were also interesting but honestly I liked the simplicity of having all the main characters playable at the end in FF4-Advance. I felt the augment system defeated the purpose of having set role-class characters and tried to impose a job/materia system on the game I didn't think it needed.

I do know from some FF4 'net friends that have ties to some of the Japanese fanbase that apparently a lot of the story embellishments in the DS game were not well received. Most of that stuff was injected by one of the original game's developers who was key on the DS project, a guy named Tokita (who also developed the AY story). Apparently the changes prompted a bit of negative criticism directed towards S-E and Tokita. Tokita was apparently interviewed on the PSP release and mentioned that there were a number of "concessions" made for the fans in regard to the Final Fantasy IV game proper. This is probably why ~Interlude~ was shortened as well, what I heard was that it was supposed to be a 10-15 hour game and ended up being 3-4 hours.

I think this is also why FF4-Complete is so slavish to the original SFC game. Some of it is ridiculous; I mean to keep the functionality of the fat ass chocobo they set the limit back to 48 items that can be carried. Character names (should you choose to change them) are limited to six letters...seriously? Sure the dungeons/locations look great, it's a nice blend between the GBA 2D look and the unique location designs seen in the DS version; but honestly do the maps need to be exactly the same as the SFC/GBA version? It's like the DS game pushed the pendulum too far to one side and they swung it back all the way to the other side for the new release...

I do think this game is balanced to the easy side in a number of places. I haven't gotten too far with it yet but I think the DS game was generally a harder game especially once you go up to the moon and several boss battles... As I haven't been to the moon in the PSP ver. yet maybe they up the difficulty there?

So far I'm liking the PSP version; I think it is probably the definitive official "classic" 2D version of the game and easily replaces the Advance version. It also gives you a physical copy of the After Years FWIW. I think owning a copy of this and a copy the DS version and you probably have everything you need.

I just got this game. The first thing I thought when I started playing is that it looks like it was made in RPG Maker. This is somewhat of a disappointment, it just doesn't feel like the original game at all. However, I haven't really encountered any other problems with it. Right now I'm not that far, I just got Tellah.

I mentioned that way back when the PSP ports of FF1 and 2 came out. The sprite and map tile style is very similar to the default resources for the newer RPG Makers. (Everything else is much higher quality, of course.)

I didn't really notice it with FF1 and 2 for PSP. I first noticed the RPG Maker style with The After Years when it came out for the Wii, it's not just the graphics in that one, it's everything about the game that looks like it was made in RPG Maker VX. I find the same to be true with FF4 for PSP, but FF1 and 2 still don't look nearly as RPG Maker-like.

the rpgmaker-ish characters is what bothers me tho... they somehow seem more... generic or something... i cant put my finger on it as opposed to the original game
eh, what do I care...
