Game Modification Station / null

Hello, everyone. I recently achieved the impossible--I successfully hacked FFVI, making a grammar cleanup patch, for the first time. It's all thanks to Lord J and everyone involved in FF3usME. Anyway, that's not why I'm here.

I decided I wanted to mess around with Master ZED's new game + patch, and much to my surprise, it seems like it doesn't work.

What the patch does is, once you speak to the man in the Beginner's Classroom who is behind the front desk, you're asked, New Game +? Of course, when you choose Yes, the game freezes and kind of artifacts for half a second, then the screen goes black indefinitely.

So, what gives? I don't know Master ZED too well, so I don't know his type of humor or personality, but I was wondering, was this patch created as a prank, maybe? Or was it never tested? Did I apply it wrong, somehow? Or does something happen in the process due to modern technology...?

I've tried headered, unheadered, (Unheadered just makes the game artifact on startup.) v1.1, v1.0, clean, hacked--nothing. It's all very peculiar.

Thanks for your time.

Game Modification Station / Project II: Final Fantasy IV
« on: January 27, 2013, 01:48:53 PM »
It's out! Project II, the extensive Final Fantasy II US script rewrite that I've been dying to make since I was 11. Here's the link to the topic on RHDN: http://www.romhacking.net/forum/index.php/topic,17302.0.html

Check it out!

(Original post below)

Hello everyone! I'm doing a small project on FFII US, and it's actually going along swimmingly! However, I've noticed there are plenty of messages that contain a single letter, usually D (or T in the case of the end of Bank 3) for filler space.

Now, there are a lot of these, and what I was wondering was, is it okay to remove them? They seem to serve no purpose and have nothing special about them that I can see in ff4kster.

Thank you in advance for your time, and have a nice day!

So, now that FF3usME has a dialogue editing function, I figured I'd try to outdate ManuLoewe's patch that agonized me so in my youth. However, I want to do a bit more than that and revert the graphics to the Japanese version's, hence the topic.

So my questions to you are these - does FFIII on the SNES have automatic linebreaks for dialogue? It would save a helluva lotta space if it does.

And secondly, how would one go about reverting graphics? I mean including the final battle, the cafe signs and the mute symbol. Lord J's more thorough patch corrupts the battle background used in the cave to South Figaro, so that's no dice. The things I'm probably going to need to change...

- Critic
- Chadarnook (Goddess)
- Barb-e and similar foes
- Goddess
- The "Earth" tier at the final battle (The background that likely corrupted the cave)
- Starlet
- Siren
- Cafe sign
- Mute symbol

I know for sure I'm going to be using assassin17's Sketch bug fix and Yazoo's FFVI title screen as well. I've resolved myself to not make this conform to the rest of the series, but look a bit more like Ted Woolsey was translating from the start rather than replacing the people responsble for the translation of "FFII" halfway to release time.

Submissions / FF1 Patch - Grammar Cleanup
« on: August 20, 2011, 05:49:28 AM »
This is a small patch that cleans up the grammar of Final Fantasy and puts the majority of its ALL CAPS TEXT in proper case, with a few minor bonuses. No bugs are fixed.

...Yes, it was really necessary to all caps that.

This is largely untested, but I highly doubt that this contains anything game-breaking. I won't be providing any screenshots due to the nature of the patch, and the name I'd like to be credited as is rotschleim.

Thanks and have a great day!

EDIT: Now at v0.1a to fix that issue and one more. This should be the last version unless I get bug reports from enthusiasts.

EDIT2: Now at v0.1b to revert class names and fix the stupid Clinic text that I forgot about...

Gaming Discussion / Final Fantasy series "teaser text"
« on: April 25, 2011, 05:52:17 AM »
Hey guys! I have no idea where else to place this, so I thought I'd put it here.

As I mentioned in darkmage's "Final Fantasy VI Improvement" thread, I was introducing some younger kids to the FF series. I really wanted to sell the PS1 era FFs to the kids, but my explanations basically consisted of, "This is awesome and it is a milestone game NOW LET'S PLAY IT." At the same time, I was noticing the back of the PS1 FF boxes really suck. I mean, seriously, FFIX doesn't even have a bulletpoint features list. It just has a quote saying, "THIS IS THE BEST FF EVER OMG IT'S BY SQUARE BUY IT NOW."

There's more to this story, however. I heard about the improvements made to FFVIII when they ported it to Windows, and I wanted to play it solely for those changes. However, the prices were outrageous, so I opted for piracy. When I went to the torrent site to download it, I found that the uploader even went the extra mile to write his own little story teaser. I really enjoyed it, so I saved it in a .TXT file.

I decided I'd rewrite the jewel case "backsides" for the three PS1 Final Fantasies with my own personal flair. However, I noticed that the other games up until XII had really sucky "box backsides," so I decided to include them all, from I to X-2. I must say I'm pleased with the results.

Unfortunately, when it came time to finally read the text to the kids, their fear of being scorned by their father due his attitude towards JRPGs won out over my innocent little experiment. This basically sat around on my hard drive until I chose to upload it as an attachment here.

Have some "making of" notes, since I give that out like candy.

I had 5 base goals for each set of "teaser text."
1. A snappy tagline.
2. Draw the "customer" into the story without giving too much away.
3. Make it compatible with every version of the game released. I made an exception for FFIII, which I solely based off the DS version.
4. At least four "bulletpoints of interest" and utilize any quotations that would help it "sell."
5. A sense of self-inclusion for the "customer." This one was really important to me.

-For Final Fantasy I, IV, and VI, I based my text off the backs of their original US release boxes. No sense reinventing the wheel, after all.
-For Final Fantasy IX, X, and X-2, I based my text off the backs of their original European release cases.
-For FFVIII, I combined the European release's case with the text I found on the torrent download page. I'm really pleased with how the merge turned out.
-I REALLY wanted to "sell" FFVII to the kids, so I put a bit more effort into it than others. I used the "teaser text" found on Warmech.net, the European case, the US case, the PC boxes, and made sure to include all of their bulletpoints and quotes. I hope my love for this game shows!

Please enjoy, or trash it and walk away, or something so long as you read it!

:omg: A new version after three years? It's more likely than you'd think.

This is a new version of the old "Gogo/Brush" patch, which allowed Gogo to equip all brushes and the beret. This patch was made exclusively for use with assassin17's "Brushless Sketch" logic error fix.

Aside from changing the name of the thing to "The Sketching Mime", all I did was use Lord J's FFIIIusME v6.50 to update the patches, and the readme has been touched up a lot.

The patch is attached.

 :edit:
Also, as I said before, there should be no major changes to this patch aside from version number and file renaming, but if anyone disagrees, please feel free to elaborate!

Final Fantasy V Research & Development / Various FFV hacks
« on: August 12, 2009, 10:47:21 AM »
Uh, thanks for the topic split... I guess...

Anyway, in another topic, there was mention of Bartz's blue magic right handed attacking sprite being messed up.

I pointed out that Grond, the creator of Final Fantasy++ and Final Fantasy++: World of Chaos, had created a fix for this problem. However, I think his site went down or something, but I was able saved that particular hack, as well as his Galuf's Mimic Sprites hack.

I also have InstrctrTrepe's FFV hacks, too. Well, not the Knife etc. fix as I decided on the Fractional M patch instead, which fixes that particular bug.

Anyhow, stuff is attached.

Oh, and the "font update" patch is my own creation--it removes the stupid gray shadow RPGe felt the compulsion to add.

Game Modification Station / FFVI Font Cleanup
« on: July 02, 2009, 06:05:19 PM »
Yeah, I'm bored and have nothing to do. Well, actually, I could be correcting some song lyrics or reading a light novel, but still.

So, yeah. The FFVI font, Chicago, has some issues with it. Firstly, the 12x12 (or whatever) font. It has an extra spaces on the rightmost side of the font; real Chicago doesn't have this.

Secondly, the 8x8 font. Anyone who's anyone knows that in its current state, I hate the little bastard. I'll simply be turning it into the Bahamut Lagoon variation.

That's pretty much it. Hopefully this won't make me go "RAEG".

Dialogue font's done.

Patch is done and attached. Screenshots below.

Gaming Discussion / FFVI cosmetic hacks; anyone remember these?
« on: June 16, 2009, 05:01:18 AM »
Some time ago, I found a website that had some hacks that edited a few graphic tiles in FFVI--basically for all versions.

I've Googled and I've Googled, yet I can't seem to find it again. It wasn't Drakkhen's site, nor was it ZED's, Lord J's, Terii Senshi's, or Assassin's. I wish I would've saved the URL. All I remember is that it was a white-text-on-black-background website with some sort of plain porportional font.

Do you guys know what I'm talking about?

Gaming Discussion / The State of the Lufia Series' Walkthroughs
« on: May 19, 2009, 07:48:39 AM »
So here I'm going to complain about the state of Lufia & the Fortress of Doom and Lufia: The Legend Returns walkthroughs. I'm not going to bother to mention Lufia II: Rise of the Sinistrals, because that one's the good child and it's got so much more research put into it, and I'm also not going to cover Lufia: Ruins of Lore because I have yet to play that game and doubt I ever will; the art style in that game makes me want to kick puppies.

Anyway, let's get on with it.

I don't get it. I mean, I'm not even a ROM hacker and I know that there's bits missing from these damned things. I mean, sure, we've at least got the "Treasure Guide" for The Fortress of Doom, although it pretty much demands you to download/buy some sort of software so you can properly view it. I mean, hell, the author himself states that it's not meant to be seen in a .TXT file, hence why I'm forcing myself to clean it up now into a more readable order.

As for The Legend Returns, as I've said before: I know that the game has horrible grammar, but does that automatically make it OK for all the walkthroughs, FAQs, and guides pertaining to it look like they were written by people with third grade educations? For example, the only decent one I can find is loaded with emoticons. It also can't decide if Wain is called "Wain," "Wein," "Main," or "Hero." Alstadt is also apparently Astadt, Aldstadt, and Asdtat. Punctuation is so scattered, it's unbelievable. At least it's better than the last one I had--apparently, Wain was also Wine and Wayne, Dei was Deh, and Seena was Senna, Sina, Sheena, and Sheila. Is there some in-joke that The Legend Returns' walkthroughs must be poorly spelled to coincede with the game? I don't get it.

Then we have Lufia II: Rise of the Sinistrals, where the walkthroughs are all nice and perfect, where 100% treasure collection is basically in every guide, where they even bother to list out miscellaneous details, like differing townspeople messages and battle formulae. Really, I just don't get it. Sure, Rise of the Sinistrals is probably the best game in the series, or it would be if not for its over 9000 bugs, but that's no reason to ignore the other two in the main Sinistrals trilogy, or hell, even the sidestory game!

Well, that's my rant for today. I should probably just start a blog or somethin', huh?

Oh, I forgot to mention--I'm cleaning up this "Jimeous" person's guide for The Legend Returns so it's a little more bearable. That's the "decent guide" I mentioned before. I'm only keeeping it for personal use, so I doubt he'll have any qualms about me doing this.

Gaming Discussion / Computer Blues (Containts teen wangst)
« on: May 15, 2009, 11:19:56 PM »
WARNING: 15-YEAR-OLD BOY'S ANGSTING INSIDE. ENTER AT YOUR OWN RISK!

 :isuck:

That's...all there is to it.

 :isuck:

Really, that pretty much sums up the topic. My computer lags horribly when I emulate GameBoy Color games, but not NES, SNES, GBA, or even PS1 games. Yes, you heard right--PS1 games run better than a simple GBC game on my hunk o' junk. This is what I get for pirating, I guess. This is probably also what I get for being poor.

At any rate, as of late, my computer also does not let me listen to MP3s and emulate at the same time while using speedup. Again, this is what I get for being poor and not being able to buy an iPod like all the 6-year-olds.

But that doesn't really have anything to do with the topic at hand, yes? Well, let me tell you of more suckage: every non-vBulletin forum I go to lags when I type. I'm currently typing up this wangstfest in Notepad, for those curious. Anyhow, this started when I switched from IE 7 to IE 8. I'd just switch to Firefox, but I have a feeling it'll lag on that, too.

Back to the GBC issue here--I've tried BGB, but if I try to make the screen size any larger than the default x1 resolution, the game lags. Not to mention it lags in VBACE. "VBACE's outdated!" you say. "Get VBA-M!" There's a problem there, too--don't you think I would've switched already if I could? I mean, hell, it's linked in the friggin Game Progress thread. The problem here is that it's like what DS games are on my computer: too advanced, so it lags for everything.

Don't really know how to end this. So I guess I'll just end it like a normal LiveJournal entry: "WHY DOESN'T ANYONE UNDERSTAND ME BAWWWWWWWWWWWWWW /wrist"

...Or something like that.

Gaming Discussion / Am I a bad gamer?
« on: September 23, 2008, 09:14:48 PM »
Well, firstly, I'd like to say that I've been thinking for a while, and now, as the topic title implies, I'm wondering: Am I a bad gamer? I'll make a short list. But before you pass judgment, keep in mind that I love every single game I listed almost equally (Beyond the Beyond, DQIII and BoFII included).

1. I don't use actual gaming apparatus when I play video games.
In other words, I only emulate (using a keyboard). The exceptions are that my parents have a GameBoy Advance which I occasionally play Golen Sun and Golden Sun: The Lost Age on (And that's because it looks awful on a computer screen without filtering. I got the two for free from a family friend, by the way), or if I feel like buying a computer controller with money I got for a birthday or for Christmas (I've gone through three of the damn things so far... I hate GGE909 Recoil pads by Gaming-Elements :bah:). As a side note, due to my family's money problems, I can't afford to buy video games.

2. I don't play anything more advanced than PS1 games.
This is due to my family's above money problem, really. I can't afford PS3, XBOX 360, Wii, PSP, or DS, or even PS2 or XBOX. Sure, one could argue that PS2 and DS emulation is improving steadily, but I doubt my hunk o' junk could play them.

3. I only have console RPGs on my computer.
Yes, it's true. I do play the occasional Mario, Zelda, Donkey Kong, or a random brawler game, but I mainly have RPGs. It's not that I have anything against those types of games, it's just that they're not really my forte.

4. I only have the (more or less) well-known "classic series."
What do I mean by this? Look at my list for yourself:
Breath of Fire (GBA)
Breath of Fire III (PS1)
Breath of Fire IV (PS1)
Chrono Cross (PS1)
Chrono Trigger (SNES)
Dragon Quest I•II (SNES)
Dragon Quest IV (NES)
Dragon Quest V (SNES)
Dragon Quest VI (SNES)
Dragon Quest VII (PS1)
EarthBound (SNES)
EarthBound Zero (NES)
Final Fantasy I & II (GBA)
Final Fantasy III (NES)
Final Fantasy IV Advance (GBA)
Final Fantasy V Advance (GBA)
Final Fantasy VI Advance (GBA)
Final Fantasy VII (PS1)
Final Fantasy VIII (PS1)
Final Fantasy IX (PS1)
Legend of the Dragoon (PS1) <- The only non-series game I have. :isuck:
Lufia (SNES)
Lufia II (SNES)
Lufia III (GBC)
Secret of Mana (SNES)
Seiken Densetsu 3 (SNES)
Sword of Mana (GBA)
Tales of Destiny (PS1)
Tales of Eternia (PS1)
Tales of Phantasia (GBA)
Tales of Phantasia (PS1)
Tales of Phantasia (SNES)

You may notice some games in a series that are missing from this list, which brings me to my next point...

5. I only play the most-updated, prettiest versions of series games (ToP aside), even if it means waiting.
This is actually two points in one: I don't play any sidestory games (Yes, I know that "of Mana" is technically an FF sidestory series), such as Lufia: Ruins of Lore, Legend of Mana or Final Fantasy Mystic Quest (JCE's gonna kill me for this). I also don't really play any games that aren't in a series (Though I've been considering picking up Beyond the Beyond again, Legend of the Dragoon is currently the only exception to this, as I pointed out earlier). As for the second point, I won't play, say, Dragon Quest III for the GBC or NES as I know that the SNES version is almost done being translated. I also won't play the original Breath of Fire II knowing that Ryusui's 1/4 way to being done.

Gaming Discussion / A new FFVIA bug's been found
« on: August 18, 2008, 09:21:20 AM »
Has anyone here heard of the new bug? I replied to the topic with another side effect of it. I didn't explain it so well over there, so I'll try again here:
Quote from: me
I did this, and the new game appears to be using my window style of choice, number 5, but none of the colors; I changed them to a deep sky-blue color. But when I go into the menu, it returns to the default window style again... Interesting.

15
Okay, so ever since I discovered Tales of Phantasia (Once again, thanks DKK), I've had the weirdest fetish for getting into game series that I've always heard about, but never played. For example, recently, I've decided to give Earthbound a try (Thanks to chrono-crisis.com's Halloween special web-comic). And even more recently, I gave Star Ocean a go (Courtesy of my bad habit of looking through old topics. This time, I was at Phantasian Productions' forum looking at a Tales of Eternia "undub" topic, and a Star Ocean 2 "undub" was mentioned).

Now, a few more series that I've always heard of but never tried are Suikoden (My friend Shauna and GameFAQs message boards), Persona (RHDN), Valkyrie Profile (This very forum), Xeno(Various places), and the Soul Blazer series (Fantasyanime.com). Now I ask, thou with knowledge, this question--I like Breath of Fire, Chrono, Dragon Quest, Final Fantasy, Lufia, Mana, Star Ocean, Tales,Wild ARMs, and Zelda. Would I like any of these games?

I'd like to give them all a chance, but at the same time, I'm running out of space on my computer to hold all my crap.
