Damage Numbers Display

A little off topic but somewhat the same subject.

While playing around with the graphics/menu data for the battles, I've noticed that when attacked by or attacking the enemy there's five(5) different placement values on the screen that bounce.
On the normal play, I only see the four(4) displayed.

Is there an algorythm routine for showing more than 9999 and relimit it to 59999? (still keeping the two bytes limit)
It would also be nice to have more than 9999 hp and 999 mp, but that's another story.

4 is for damage, the other bit is for healing or damage.

However, I think HHIP is saying something different. What do you mean by five different placement values? Numbers only have 4, and while "Miss!" has 5, it's stored as a graphic, not as separate letters. Can you give a better description, HHIP?

You can have more than 9999 HP and MP (which are stored as 2-byte values, meaning the max is 65535). However, you'd have to change the code for displaying HP/MP in the menus and battles.

If he's referring to the amount of number graphics displayed, that could be an interesting find. In FF4 and ET there are unused + and - characters stored with that font, it's possible they were originally going to use those to indicate damage instead of colors. Those characters were overwritten by the other half of the miss graphic in FF2us.

Yes I was trying to refer to the damage shown on screen as well as the damage done limits.

Interesting . . . I haven't run across any code that specifies 5 digits, but I'll keep my eyes open. There is a damage check for 9999, so that would have to be changed as well. I tried to do it once, but couldn't quite figure it out. Someday I'll take another stab at it.
