Final Fantasy IV Research & Development / Re: Random Lesser Known Facts
« on: October 14, 2008, 04:22:18 PM »
FF4's original DK vs Paladin Cecil seems to have the DK at 4520 HP.. interestingly enough, that would be DK Cecil's HP above level 90....

yang-as-boss and kain-as-boss have absurdly high HP as well... compare as well golbez-as-boss vs. him in the zemus fight.  there's usually a massive HP skew towards humans-as-monsters in general... look at the various soldiers in the game.

Well, it's a tad different.

Kain meant to kick your ass.

Yang is very beatable, as long as Palom learns Quake to speed up the process.... just mass cast Protect until he tickles you.

When a user with Black Magic has Toad and Piggy status, they are able to cast both Toad and Piggy in the SNES version. The checks for spell availability seems to be connected to the status, but apparently the obvious exception to the rule (when both statuses are inflicted) was forgotten about.

I didn't write this because it was a random idea (though, I was inspired after the Golbez thread I recently wrote up).

Final Fantasy IV Research & Development / Pig Status: "Semi-Free Ribbon"
« on: October 14, 2008, 12:23:48 AM »
I didn't think of it too much previously, but I guess it's worth considering. If you fear certain monsters afflicting a status effect on you, and you don't have a Ribbon handy, this is a good substitute. Given how status priorities work, you have the opportunity of getting the closest thing to a Ribbon in having Piggy status. You lose a number of commands, particularly the spell commands, but you get free protection against the following:

Mute
Darkness/Blind
Curse
Paralysis
Sleep
Charm
Berserk (yes, that means control over the Pinkpuffs/Flan Princesses battle)

Unfortunately Poison/Venom and Gradual Petrification is not part of it... but otherwise that's pretty damn good. However, this won't protect you against Bad Breath.

Your offense/defense is not affected, so you can still become relatively useful... if you are a fighter.

 :edit:
This method is ideal for a fighter.. even better with the guy wielding the Avenger. Piggy status is also handy on the enemy via a Change Rod, but I forgot the "benefits" of the Piggy spell as it is underrated... it's really useless for any other purpose than what I've suggested.

Final Fantasy IV Research & Development / Thinking About Golbez
« on: October 14, 2008, 12:12:31 AM »
Ok, this idea came to me in some screwed up way...

When you fight Golbez, you "start" losing control of your own characters because of Hold Gas. I hadn't really thought it through before, but if you want the Hold Gas to not be effective.. you want to cast Mute/Silence on yourself. Since Mute status has a priority over Hold, it has no power over you. How's this useful? Well, it allows Cecil get ready his ATB bar while he does his scripted speech stuff... allowing you to revive other party members or get an early shot at Golbez.

 :edit:

Note: The reviving aspect should be done after the character dies at the hands of the Shadow Dragon.

Also, the attack should only be made after "Mist Dragon" is summoned.

Nintendo would have no idea... you mean ask Square.

The only requirement is having 25MP available.

It had only occured to me now that monster magic with HP Leak always succeeds.. although Zeromus makes both Bio/Virus and Big Bang work 100% of the time (not Nuke/Flare or Meteor).

No, I really meant RPGOne's translation patch for FF6.

See how the spell menu looks different? The MP box was removed in favor of expanding the spell names in battle.

Got Gogo, met Gau's father and Duncan.  There doesn't seem to be a star shaped mountain, I must be forgetting something important to 'open it up'.  I'll find it, eventually.   :cycle:

Talk to "the emporor" twice.

The drivers for HD2000 series and up cards are fucked up if you're an AGP user. You'll have to install the AGP hotfix drivers(Found on AMD's site), and I don't believe they've been updated in a while.

Are you sure that's a fix? I thought it was a simple registry entry...

The only way of expanding the magic menu in battle is to do what the RPGOne's translation does with the spell list.

You would have to remove the MP Cost Box and move the text around to the top (or bottom) of the list... then you can expand the spells freely (it seems to expand to only 7 characters plus spell sprite).

Technically, you are onto something. It still pisses me off nonetheless that Bomb is gotten way after you already have the Mist Dragon summon.

The Bomb summon isn't fire elemental though, so that does shoot your theory down somewhat.

You would've thought they would've written somewhere for Bombs to deal extra damage to Rydia or something...

You should educate yourself about PSUs. Too many people buy a crappy PSU and accidentally fuck themselves over because of lack of knowledge. Here's a link: http://www.silentpcreview.com/article28-page1.html

Reading it now...

As for the video card's cooling... If you're concerned, here's a model with lower Core clocks but better cooling: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102781

Sounds good.. I think

As for the video card, I can't help it... moar powah!!!!! http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102762 - both in raw rendering and fluff.

You haven't mentioned what processor and motherboard, though - processor so we don't recommend anything that's going to suffer from a bottleneck (CPU can't keep up), and motherboard to make sure that recommendations are electrically compatible (does your motherboard support 1.5V AGP cards?).

ASUS K8V-SE Deluxe, Athlon64 3200+ (2GHz, 1MB L2 cache), Win2k, 1GB DDR @ 400MHz

The mobo is for AGP 4x/8x cards, so that's a non-issue.

Fuck Enermax unless you're using one of their high end models.

Damn good PSU. Has everything you need. More than enough power, and more connectors than you need(6 VS 4). I use a lower wattage version of it myself.

Mind you, I'm not entirely educated on PSUs. I did buy an Antec PSU before... it seems to run just fine.

I'm not familiar with Sapphire if it's a quality manufacturer. However, I am concerned about the heat (I'm not looking to pay extra for video card cooling)...

I was starting to freak out since another PSU died... another Enermax. I'm not sure why they don't last long enough...

I was looking for a suggestion for replacing it, I don't need that much... running 2 PATA HDs, 2 PATA CDROMS (DVD-ROM and DVDWriter)... ATI Radeon 9800 Pro (AGP), ATI TV Wonder Pro, SB Live Value (Gateway OEM)...

Also, if my video card hasn't gotten fucked by the slow death of the PSU, I need a recommendation there.. it doesn't matter what exactly, as long as it is on par with what I have, if not better (it doesn't matter if it's ATI or NVidia, as long as it is equal or better than what I have). NVidia 6600GT/my current ATI video card are the baseline.
