RIP July 2010, may you never return
« on: August 02, 2010, 03:49:23 AM »
Warning, long-winded rant approaches!

What transpired was probably the most amount of bullshit ever, all squeezed into a 31-day period. First, the heat wave, which I'm sure just about everyone has experienced enough for an entire lifetime. There was a 2 week stretch where I would have felt better dead, because it was so god damn hot and humid outside (and inside). I know 85 and humid doesn't sound bad compared to what others have had, but trust me, when you aren't used to it, it's bad.

Two weeks ago (-ish), MSN (via Trillian) suddenly decided to stop working. At the time it stopped, I figured it was a problem on their end (not the first time). It continues for a few days, and I didn't think much of it at the time cause it's only annoying, but not problematic. Fast forward to tonight, and it's still out. Now it's a problem. So I ask in #rhdn, and apparently Trillian stopped supporting the MSN plugin a while ago, and it'll never be updated again for the v3.x versions.
FUCK YOU CERULEAN STUDIOS, AND YOUR LITTLE DOG, TOO! YOU JUST LOST A 6-YEAR USER.
Overreaction? Not quite. The v4.x series has some bullshit tied to it I am not comfortable with, so I will not be upgrading.

Oh, but there's more. I decided to start my FF1 speedrun over again, but this time I'm gonna be sane and not do a memosave run. It's going beautifully until I get to the earth cave. The first trip took only 2 days to do, but it was still annoying. It's very hard to get a segment that doesn't suck in that place. Then it took another 2 days to get the earth rod, which was way more annoying. Then comes this, which took a week and a half to do. I'll spare the details, because it was frustrating to no end.

And finally, we have the topper. July 27, Starcraft II's launch. The Sunday before (the 25th), I picked up a paper to see some of the ads and to see what was on sale in the stores this week. I peek at Best Buy, and I see SC2 listed, for sixty freaking dollars. Seriously, what the hell? This isn't a 360 game. Looking at that alone, you are no doubt saying I'm overreacting, but I'm not done yet. SC2 is going to be a trilogy, with 2 expansions (obviously). That means the expansions will likely run $50 or $60 each. $180 for a single game.
FUCK YOU BLIZZARD! YOU JUST LOST A PAYING CUSTOMER.
I had a sliver of hope that SC2 would not end my PC gaming life, but alas, that hope has faded.

So yeah, one bullshit month I am glad has moved on. Has everyone else had as shitty a month? :tongue:

My July was great.  However, August is off to a rough start after I had to endure back-to-back instances of uppercase, scrolling, and profane text.

If it makes you feel any better, I did try and put them in the spoiler tags. But somehow, they are broken. Hooray SMF 2.0!

I don't care for Trillian. I use Pidgin.

I'm a cheap ass gamer, so when Blizzard comes out with a SC2 Battle Chest @ $40, I'll care then.

Seriously... don't bother with the good stuff that early, unless you like giving charity to Blizzard.

$60 isn't too bad. It's certainly got an excellent multiplayer but there's a lot of stuff missing compared to battle.net 1.0. The lack of chat channels -- I'm used of it because of Beta but it feels like the game is pretty dead when it's got a million people playing? It feels soulless. It's exactly opposite of what Starcraft should feel like.

I won't spoil anything, but the Campaign really put me down. I ran though it and most of the interesting story elements exist in easily skipped side missions. If your like me, you'll get to the ending and be like, "Why did any of this happen?!"
I played through it on hard to slow down my progress a bit and I feel like I probably didn't pick too much up the first time around. It's certainly not quite the epic three tiered story you'd expect from the usual Blizzard RTS (SC, BW, WC3, WC2, ect.) It's doesn't feel so much like 1/3 of a story as much as being 1/3 as interesting.
Some missions feel so pointless story wise. They have interesting and fun gameplay value but all the characters feel soulless too.
I'm playing though a third time on easiest just to get my tech upgrade achievements and I'm noticing a lot of little bits of REALLY interesting information.
Anyone else noticing them?

See, I had the exact opposite impression. I took my time playing through on hard and talking to everyone between each mission. Then went back and played it through again on Brutal. I have to say, it's quite the taunt to go into multiplayer with the kerrigan avatar. I also took the story as the set up to the rest of the story. It's basically Star Wars a new hope.

Chat channels are supposed to be coming soon

I played on normal (easy) mode and talked to everyone as well.
Then I did it again on Hard for those achievements.

Right now I'm playing it on normal again but without getting any lab or armory upgrades to see if there's a hidden bonus for doing that.
Then I gotta do that 50 kills (nydus) mission.

What put me at awe was seeing guys with alternative decals by day 3. I haven't really tried to get any of those yet. Just mostly the single player stuff.

My July was more boring than a morgue. I just wish school would start already.

And of course my August has to start off with some teen drama bullshit. To top it off--well, let me just make a list.

-sinus infection in every upper orfice;
-what is probably only one or two but feels like six freaking cavities;
-what feels like first-degree burns on my tongue; and
-scalp psoriasis that makes me appear to be balding at age seventeen.

Luckily, I went to the walk-in clinic today for my sinus infection(s), the psoriasis can be staved by /gasp washing my hair everyday, and I have a dentist appointment next month.

Now if only September would hurry it's ass up and get here. :bah:

Yeah, I was a bit disappointed by SC2 being $60. The expansions don't really bother me, PC gaming's been that way forever now, but with all the hype the actual game isn't going to be dropping any time soon.
