Final Fantasy IV Research & Development / Re: Decoding World Map Triggers

One thing that is definitely true about the Overworld map is that it is 64 times the size of any location map.  Given the hardware limitations of the SNES, I'd wonder if the game had enough RAM to load a world map that had all the interactivity of a location map...

I doubt it would be anything like that. You are very likely loading portions of that map into memory. Consider the long distance traversing you do on that map. The longest IIRC is the trip from Mysidia to Mt. Ordeals... and even that is linked to the "peninsula of power" with the different monster location borders... this is unlike FF6 (I'm not sure where FF5 goes, but it's probably close to FF4 in terms of overworld design).

My only guess is that the dialogue screen never comes up ever on the overworld. It probably won't work the way you expect.

You can reenter the Tower of Babil underground route at any time until you possess/lose the Dark Crystal.

All I can say is that the tower is "two spaces wide" like many other things - usually towns are that many spots wide.

Racial modifiers are related when it comes to weapons and armors.

Demons are simply renamed Insects/Reptiles (whatever they decided to call them in each incarnation of FF4).
It's easy to verify when you compare the monsters that have those racial modifiers. They are more or less the same (assuming you are directly comparing FF4 PSP vs FF4A/FF4).

The reason why there IS a new weapon (for FF4:TAY) is because you have to look at the overall scheme of things when it comes to that racial type.

I'm not sure of the TAY data (since noone has looked into it in depth), but the only base FF4 equipment that dealt with this race is the Ice Shield AND the Ice Rod. You would never know this by the weapon description.

Also, think about the application of the racial distribution as it relates to armor in classic FF4.

Undead - Crystal armor set, Ragnarok, "Paladin" armor set, Holy arrows - mostly useful for Mt. Ordeals
Ghouls - Silver/Mythril armor set (including the Silver Ring) - too few monsters use this designation when you can BUY the Silver/Mythril armor set
Mechs - all Hammers (which Cid never gets to smash with), Maxmilian (FF4A, only armor), Thunder Claw, Lightning Arrows - bad situations with either Cid equipment
Flan - Blood Lance/Sword, Flandango (FF4A only) - no armor for this set until the TAY version (Ancient Sword is better than your options since it is accessible earlier)
Giants - Charm/Fairy Arrows, Ogre/Poison Axe, Charm/Fairy Claw, Giant Gloves - plenty of weapons, resistance requires a rare drop
Dragon - Dragon armor set, Wyvern Lance, Dragon's Whisker, Artemis Arrows, Gold Hairpin, Crystal Ring (rare drop) - hard to not find a dragon in the Lunar Subterrane
Mage - Rune Ring, Mage Masher, Elven Bow, Silence Arrows, Rune Staff (rare), Aegis Shield - there's plenty of mages to deal with when you get all of this stuff
Reptile - Ice Rod, Ice Shield - Ice Rod barely used for physical attacks on the Turtle, Basilisk, Gargoyle... Ice Shield used against the Black Lizard and Lamia... that's about it

So, when you look at it, the Demonsbane only corrects the fact that there isn't a viable weapon to take care of that racial modifier.

The only possible bug I've found: Occasionally, after setting Berserk status on a character, the ATB bar will fill, then empty, and need to refill again before an attack will be made. This seems semi-random and doesn't always occur, hence why I'm labeling it as a bug.

I don't think it's random. It might have to do with "reseting" the ATB after going under Berserk status. Of course, videos would help show this...

From a berserk use video, it resets the ATB, then when it gets green, it uses "yellow" for the action delay (the same type of thing when Jumping or casting a spell).

Although, there's some reference to some Berserk based bug for dead characters. It seems like they have to have died while under Berserk to "hold onto" that status. Reviving out of battle doesn't reverse said status.

I'm starting to think that Haste/Slow still work like the old game. The best way to test this is through the damage of HP Leak/Sap. The damage is limited and finite, so it is easier to test that using what we already know.

Also, many items seem to ignore Reflect status. Spider's Silk for instance in the older games did NOT ignore Reflect (since it is based off of the spell Slow).

Auto-hide should have been some sort of toggle.

v1 is terrible (SNES versions), since Edward's agility would allow him to be the first chicken to hide on demand. I forget the exact behavior, but it made healing him difficult in battle.

v2 is better (GBA/PSP), but Edward's agility and poor timing could prevent him from being healed before "auto-hide on his turn" kicks in.

General Discussion / Re: Gamefaqs + eternal stupidity

How does the infamous VeghEsther survive by continuing to troll and/or just stay stupid?

Someone needs to hunt it down...

A few more things I've seen.

Black Hole removes Sap (HP leak), which used to be a Dispel feature... hmm...

With Poison having been set to simply apply the status, would that actually fix the bug in FF4 (setting it from Damage+Status to a Status attack)? Kinda doubtful...

It seems to me that they "put back in" the weak spell multiplier in the scripted sequences. Most notable is the Tellah vs Golbez sequence and the FuSoYa+Golbez vs Zemus sequence. I wonder....

Big Bang seems to have his the Sap (HP leak) component. I'm very disappointed... That was the sheer reason you didn't want to use Holy elemental magic on him.

During the Zemus battle, I don't quite get why Slow didn't change Zemus's color... I believe it has to do with it being a scripted battle. Hold should/would never work on him, but it's probably a reaction to resistance. It seems to be a more visible change. The status will "hit", but proceed to do have "no effect".

 :edit:
Zeromus EG's bounced Reflect is not applied to the character... I wonder if that's magic evasion related (high magic evasion in the SNES ports did actually BLOCK Reflect from working) or if it's intentional.

 :edit:
Demon is simply the renamed term of "Reptile".

I have the expectation that Edward should never hide... he has to be productive on the field. Otherwise, his existence is effectively worthless.

I'm not saying Hide doesn't have tactical value... outside of those instances, it's kinda crippling when he auto-Hides on his own when you want to heal him.

I've always used him in some sort of support offense role. I have a low expectation of him by design.

Then again, the Assassin Dagger+Hero Shield combo makes him 1 of 3 that can absorb Holy (more if we're using the earlier FF4A versions)...

Does he still get healed by Hide+Sylph in the Wii/PSP versions?

I've complained lots about FF4A, particularly regarding how the trials suck... mostly regarding the story (because, they aren't really that great, outside of say Kain).

However, I remember one trial that is shockingly the worst above all else (feel free to disagree).

Edward's Trial is built poorly on a faulty premise... Edward may suck, but the game gives you all the tools to make his life a living hell.

1) Requirem Harp - Why put in a weapon only to be removed? It could arguably be a great weapon (better than the Blood Lance and Blood Sword).. assuming they got it working correctly the first time around. However, the mistake in doing this in the first place causes Edward to lose the weapon before the boss battle... IIRC. I guess it could be worse.... the designated special weapon for Edward, Apollo's Harp, is a very capable weapon vs Lunar Shiva... so this mistake can cost you when you are using Edward to fight...

2) Low HP - Edward has approximately the same HP growth as Rydia... and that's only slightly above the twins (Porom being the worst of the final party members, Tellah and FuSoYa trailing horribly). Considering that the boss, Lunar Shiva uses an attack that is primarily HP based (based on her current HP), this makes survival tough... except for the fact...

3) Red Armor set (FF6-ish armor) - It's great when armor provides elemental resistance. It's hard to argue against it. However, FF4 has been designed around elemental weakness in armor... and causes "fire resistance" to also create "ice weakness". Factor in that the boss is Lunar Shiva... well, you give the keys to killing Edward in one easy blow. Vishnu Vest is Edward's ultimate armor, however IIRC this is only acquired AFTER Edward's Trial location. This would normally addressed the Red Armor set's woes.. but most newbies won't figure that out. Maybe donating a Protect Ring would be helpful... probably. The other options are a freed up Black Belt and/or the DarkHood...

Now if only the Chant command weren't useless against Zeromus...

418
Well... it's kinda interesting. Having two different results is kinda cool, except the healing is pitiful and being extra weak makes even a simple Chocobo summon to be worthwhile.

Final Fantasy IV Research & Development / FF2/FF4ET: Forgotten Rubicante
« on: October 11, 2012, 02:03:41 PM »
I've learned this today, having watched a bit of FF4's PSP version...

Apparently, there is code there to react to summons for Rubicante. When hit by a summon, Rubicante proceeds to cast Ice2/Blizzara on himself. This doesn't seem to change whether or not the "cloak" status is active.

This code doesn't appear in FF2US or FF4ET. I don't quite understand why... (it's very similar to Scrmaglione's missing Slow counter vs Fire magic).
