Title: Monster defense percentages
Post by: chillyfeez on September 18, 2015, 04:40:35 PM
Hey, has anybody ever noticed that when a monster's AI contains the "set defense" command, the percentage is written into the stat record? I always kind of assumed that monsters (without the bug fix) were doomed to no defense percentages, but apparently, there's this...

Yep, DeathLike2 noticed this a long time ago, it's written in the Algorithm's guide as I recall, the only two instances it naturally occurs is against Kainazzo with his shell retreating and Valvalis with her Tornado.

There you are, Grimoire. I figured you'd know when you finally saw this. Thanks!

Sorry about my absence, school's been running me rather ragged lately. I'm not quite up to the new content in Threat from Within yet, and maybe I'm just blind (or rushing) but I haven't noticed anything too wildly different from previous versions as of yet.

No, there shouldn't be significant changes to the older content. I'm trying really hard to move forward with it, and minimize the amount of side projects and distractions I tend to get into - especially since the "chapter" I'm working on is much larger in scope than anything that came before. Another update will be ready soon, as a matter of fact...

Making sure I understand this bug. For the 3 physical defense bytes, the first and third bytes are used properly (base and multiplier) but the middle byte for evasion/percentage is erroneously left at zero? And the same pattern occurs for the 3 magical defense bytes?
When reading battle algorithms documents before, I got the impression that more of the values were treated as zero, but I now think that is wrong.

Yes, you're right.
When the assigned percentage values are written from ROM to RAM, the percentage is erroneously written to the base (or maybe it's multiplier?) Byte, then overwritten by the value that actually belongs there. The percentage value is thus left blank.
As noted above, the only time a monster ever has live defense percentages is when one of the defense indexes changes mid-battle (because that routine works properly).
