Mystery Flags?
« on: March 07, 2016, 01:45:52 PM »
I'm currently thinking of going through all the events in the game and essentially reversing the order of all the flags - starting from flag 240 and counting down instead of starting from flag 1 and counting up.

Mostly I want to do this so I can maximize the amount of unused flags that can be used by Grimoire's conditional branching mod (which can use flags 1 - 125).

Another reason is so I can separate the flags up a bit, meaning I could Toggle the mountain range that appears after the events in Mist, or control when that ship by Fabul appears, etc, without it being tied to one of the flags used for story progression. I'm pretty sure most these are already labeled in FF4kster, unless I'm mistaken.

What worries me are the Mystery Flags I see in some of FF4kster's menus. I don't recall ever seeing what number any of those flags are, just that they were "Mystery Flags".

Does anyone know what number any of these flags are? I don't mind finding out as I go, but it would save me a lot of time if I knew a few of them beforehand.

I think the "mystery flags" in ff4kster to which you're referring might not be event flags. They might just be other bytes or bits of RAM that toggle on or off depending on the situation.

Regardless, I can think of a potential issue cropping up with this plan: there are some non-event related things (which, as yet, can't be edited with ff4kster) that depend on event flags: the Overworld Terraforming (Agart crater, mist mountains, broken damcyan), the ability of the Enterprise to take off, the ability of the Enterprise to go to Zot, "mystic silver," Magnetic Magnes Cave (you can change whether or not it's magnetic, but not which flag controls the property), the Enterprise crane, the Falcon drill... There may be more, but that's all I can remember at the moment. All of those things are affected by event flags, and FF4kster does not allow you to edit which of those flags affect them. I also don't believe FF4kster documents which flags affect them by default. The information for many of them is on these boards, but not all in one place, and not necessarily all of them.
That's the most info I can give you right now about it,
What you are trying to do isn't necessarily impossible, it might just be more work than you thought initially.

Awesome! When I go through and start working on this (since I have to go through all the events so I can properly set up an event-driven party changer I made a few days ago anyway) I'll make note of any non-event related changes done by flags and post them up here (or if I spot some info on other threads I'll link to them) so anyone else that's curious about them can have the info handy.

Cool. Having all of that in one place would be handy.
I can definitely help you change the linchpin flags once they're all identified, if you want.

I've gotten up through the Events in Mist so far. I've been pretty busy lately, and haven't felt too great so I took a bit of a break.

So far, the only flag I've come across that effects things outside of events is, well, the flag set at the end of the Events in Mist (the Mountain  Range Terraforming).  Of course, I've barely begun Flag Switching, so I'll be updating this as I go.

Now, there is one thing I find odd - the flag that's set at the end of the "Opening Events" event.  I've yet to see an NPC or Trigger use this flag, and after switching the set flag to be Flag 240, I see no change in anything (not right off the bat, anyway). So unless that flag effects something under the hood, I don't think it has any particular use.

I've wondered about that, too. Theoretically, you shouldn't be able to play the game before that flag is set, so there should be no reason for it...

Event Flags can be interesting. There is an event flag in the mid-200's as I recall which overlays the screen with soldiers, White Mages, and Black Mages as I believe part of the ending events. I never saw the flag in question you're referring do anything either.

That's right, I forgot about that one! I don't know if we've ever discussed that before but I've noticed it, too.
