Bought a new computer
« on: May 09, 2008, 07:16:00 PM »
I guess you could say this was a bit of an impulse buy, spent my Wii fund on it but I think this was a better choice:

2.20GHz AMD Sempron 3800+
2x 512MB RAM (Why do they do this? Now I've got to sell these if I want to upgrade it to 2 gigs later...)
128MB GeForce 6100
Windows Vista Home Premium

And my old specs:

1.80GHz Pentium 4
1x 256MB, 1x 128MB RAM
16MB GeForce2
Windows XP Home

So as you can see it outclasses my old one in every way possible, the only thing I'm worried about is the processor, I have no idea if it's any good and I could have gotten the same computer with a 64bit dual core if I had $75 extra to waste (Which I didn't, and probably won't for at least four months). I was worried Vista might be a resource hog and planned on installing XP if it was but so far it's been good, I'm really liking the interface updates.

I'm always against pathetic mem options... but that's fixable.

Onboard video cards are a crime, for support reasons... not just performance.

I agree, it was the best I could get with the money I had to spend, and I can always upgrade it later when I've got the money (That was no longer an option with my old ones, both were maxed out for the most part).

I'd upgrade that ram ASAP. Vista works a lot better with 2 gigs of ram.

if it needs that much, then maybe the problem isn't your RAM quantity, but your OS.

Cheaper to replace ram than to buy a new OS.

Not if he already has XP, in which case it costs $0 to switch. :omg:

Sadly, I've been drawn to it as well. If given the choice, I probably wouldn't go back to 2k unless I had a very specific reason now.

So as you can see it outclasses my old one in every way possible...
Both of your machines completely slaughter mine, but then again, I think everybody's machine here completely slaughters mine. Sounds like a good buy.

quoted for emphasis.  anybody who switches from XP to (Hasta la) Vista (, Efficiency) is spending money on both the OS and the necessary hardware.  such masochism.

Really? It doesn't seem to be running slow at all, certainly better than XP did on my old computer. I'm sure that's because this one outclasses it by a lot but Vista's running great and I have no plans to install XP just to see how it runs. I do plan on upgrading the RAM as soon as I have the money, it'll be cool to see this run even better.

I really wasn't expecting to like Vista as much as I do, pretty much the same way I felt about XP when I bought my old computer, I had heard so many negative complaints about it but when I finally tried it I realized I couldn't ever go back to the unstable and crash-prone 98. I'm not saying I can't go back to XP though, I just like some aspects of this a lot more. Speaking of crash-prone, a certain poorly coded emulator crashes much more gracefully in Vista, it doesn't allow it to lock up my entire system like XP did half the time.

Funny thing, buying this without an OS would have probably cost about the same price, I did some searching online. A Vista license alone is about half the cost of this computer, the only thing I can think of to explain that is they make up the cost in all the bloatware that comes preinstalled. I turned it on to make sure it worked, set up an account, and was getting bombarded with advertisements for programs as soon as it finished, my desktop wasn't even displayed yet. I just switched it off at that point and did a clean install of Vista, got rid of all that crap, I bet the majority of people would never do that and would probably sign up for half the garbage.

Once you turn off the new GUI lameness(Have to do that with XP as well) and UAC, Vista gets a whole lot better.

Pretty much everyone has reported a major speed increase once upgrading to two gigs of ram while using vista. A USB flash drive can used as a temporary substitute via Readyboost. It's not as good as upgrading the ram to two gigs, but it'll be better than just 1 gig alone.

I like the GUI stuff in Vista.  XP's "Luna" interface looks like Fisher Price, but Aero actually looks slick and modern, and it hasn't ever slowed me down.  I absolutely must have UAC turned off, though.

imnho:
aero glass = win
uac = fail

2gb ram = win

gf6100 = passable.  it uses the mainstream forceware drivers, so fortunately support shouldn't be an issue in this case.

sempron = passable.  more than likely, your board will take ANY AM2 athlon 64 X2 without complaint, so a drop-in upgrade of absurd proportions is easily possible if ever necessary

as for your old machine:
16MB geforce2 = erm, shouldn't exist.  probably an oem custom geforce 2 mx (or mx200), meaning more craptastic.  still perfectly fine for 2d, though.
384MB ram = epic fail.  moar rams should make that box tolerable, if you have the need for a second.  however, i'm going to take a wild guess and assume you're saddled with PC100/133 sdram, which has fallen way outside the supply/demand curve for reasonable pricing (>$50 for a 512MB DIMM).  if you're lucky and have DDR, you could pick up a 512MB module for ~$16.

...and congratulations on your new box.

I believe the original nForce chipset had an integrated GF2MX that had access to only 16 megs of the system's RAM.

it did (specifically the nForce 420), but it was an AMD chipset (and therefore not used in his P4 box).
