Gaming Discussion / Re: Nintendo needs to get smart
« on: December 30, 2007, 06:29:52 AM »
I don't have a Wii, but Nintendo certainly could make tons more $$$.

I'm not exactly sure why they are holding up.. but for sure they have to get their emulation done right first before they release new ones.... people are usually aware of the minute differences after all.

They already have all the platforms emulated...therefore there is no reason technically that they don't do it.

The emulation may not be 100% complete, though.  A lot of 8- and 16-bit games relied on peculiar hardware quirks that can be difficult to emulate.

Final Fantasy IV Research & Development / FF4A Haste/Berserk/ATB issues
« on: December 29, 2007, 05:33:21 PM »
I just finished defeating the four Elemental Fiends in the Giant.  For most of this battle, I had both Haste and Berserk active on Cecil and Edge.  When I do this in FF2US, the battle is completely ridiculous -- Cecil and Edge take actions every time you blink, and I can hardly even get a Fire3, Ice-3, or Lit-3 in edgewise.  In FF4A though, it almost seems like Berserk slows them down.  Before I had Berserk on them, they seemed to be taking actions faster.  Once I added the Berserk effect, it seemed that their ATB would fill up, and then they'd wait for almost a full round before attacking.

This is only my second time through FF4A, and the ATB peculiarities are really starting to get on my nerves.  Characters will spontaneously get to take two actions in a row, and their ATB gauge gets all screwed up after their second action.  Or Rydia's ATB will fill up while you're choosing an action for Edge, and then Cecil's ATB will fill up, and your next action goes to Cecil despite Rydia filling up first.  This can go for entire rounds, with Rydia not getting to take an action until Edge has gone again.  I believe the game just goes through your characters in their party order to see who's full, instead of keeping track of who filled up first.  I don't recall 2US having this behavior, but it doesn't show you an ATB gauge either.

If I ever extend my FF engine project to attempt to play FF4, I don't think I'll end up providing a "true to the original" option.  Too many versions of this game with too many different bugs.   :bah:

The only tedious part is you would need to do this for all things that edit (or make a macro that adds it in automatically for you).

Or make a ROM class and override the [] operator.  :)  I love transparency in programming.

You'll like this.

This is from the GBA ROM, BTW.

There's even a monster AI dump.

If you do get insurance, try to get a low deductible.  I'm out $1600 thanks to a bout of food poisoning (I think I had some bad wings at Buffalo Wild Wings), since my deductible for hospital visits was $1500.

Some peculiarities I've noticed:

Edward's Dreamer's Harp seems to inflict sleep status only occasionally.  The Lamia Harp inflicts charm status quite reliably, though.

Cecil's Deathbringer (I think this is the Black sword in 2US) almost never works -- except on the Roc enemy, where it works almost 100% of the time.  It may be that the success rate is high, but most of the monsters you face while you have Deathbringer are immune to instant death?

202
Something that makes this extra confusing is the defense multiplier.

203
It must add a constant bonus to the enemy's defense then.  The Zombie's defense rating is 1, so it would need a huge multiplier to nullify even early-game Cecil's attack power.

If your weapon's elemental is effective against the enemy, you will deal 2x damage (sometimes 4x, unless there's something specific I'm missing here?).

Enemy elemental weaknesses use the most significant bit as a doubler.  So if the fire bit and the MSB are set (this is the immunity bit on resistances), fire damage does 4x damage.

Are zombies immune to dark elemental attacks?  EDIT: Just checked this in the spreadsheet, and they are.  That explains the 1 damage from Cecil's dark knight swords.

Once in a blue moon, Zombies will take more than 1 pt of damage on a critical hit. I'd consider the attribute more like 4x Darkness resistance vs Zombies (dividing any target's attack/magic power by 4 is crippling).

As far as I can tell, there's no such thing as 4x resistance.  And the Zombie does have dark immunity in the ROM.  Do critical hits ignore the immunity bit?

Definately not. The damage done is still pathetic.

I don't mean it ignores the dark resistance, but ignores the immunity (so it does more than 1 damage, but still crap).

FF5's monster that lurks in the castle where the soldiers tell you about it... it's great when the scan lies to you about the enemy and you get locked into a battle when you do a critical hit.

Iron Giant?

FF5A names the monster Jackanapes.

Is this named Garkimasra in some translations of FF5j on Super Famicom?

That means EVADE would be your only hope.

I usually survive by being lucky and not encountering a group of SORCERERs.  :)  If I'm unlucky, well, I run.  Thieves usually help the party get away, if they don't get killed first...

Unless they surprise you, and you're DOOOOOOOMED!

Yeah, that's when I get ready to press the reset button.  :bah: :lame:

Ok, some interesting info from the data (assuming this is correct).. some of which worth pointing out:

I have 100% confidence about the data, but our labels for the data are "to the best of my knowledge."

I have to agree.  Nothing strikes terror into your heart faster than seeing a band of those pink-robed mofos appear, just when you're trying to escape with the FLOATER.  GRRR!
