Thanks to Dragonsbrethren here is a bugfix patch he was working on in 2006.  Some things have been fixed and some other bug patches have been applied as well.

I'm hoping this at least causes enough of a bugfix and change that it SHOULD theoretically solve the issue with unbalanced challenge.

this is very true.  some of the stuff was fucking amazing.  i haven't played this in quite awhile, but i remember it being fairly easy by the end.
