Monitor Trouble
« on: July 27, 2008, 10:35:40 AM »
Does anyone here have experience with CRT monitors? I've been having a strange problem with this one, about two weeks ago it started taking a very long time to warm up, about five minutes or so, when it used to be almost instantaneous. Not only that it's been getting consistently darker since then, to the point I'm afraid it'll be completely unusable for any fullscreen programs soon. I use a calibration program to fix my desktop color but doesn't work for fullscreen unless the program is using OpenGL, in fact I switched a few programs with the setting from Direct3D to OpenGL for this reason alone. I don't have enough money to buy a new monitor and I'd really like to avoid buying used if I could for fear of this very same thing happening again.

One thing I found via Google that I haven't tried yet is simply unplugging the monitor for about a day, supposedly that sometimes helps when this happens. I've got the laptop to fall back on so I guess I could go a day without using this computer, figured I'd ask if there's anything else I could try before I do though. I need to do something about this, StarCraft is nearly unplayable at the maximum gamma correction now. :scared:

Well, no harm in trying it, I guess. If I had a spare monitor to send ya, I'd do it. :hmm:

119 bugs fixed and counting.

We had some bad storms move in yesterday afternoon so I ended up unplugging it then anyway. Been off for close to a day now, I'll probably give it a try in a few hours. I'm really hoping it'll work, although I doubt it will, I don't see why it would work.

If worst comes to worst I can always steal the laptop back anytime I want to play something that needs fullscreen.

:edit:

Doesn't seem to have done anything. :bah:

:edit:

Actually, it does seem a little brighter, I can see the creep while playing Zerg in StarCraft now, couldn't two days ago, it just looked like a black background.

if you look and decide that you would like the monitor, i'd just like for the shipping to be covered and that's it.  i'll check now to see how much that would be. i'm in ct and you're in nj, so it ought not to be all that expensive.

 :edit:

i just checked thing out on the usps website.  i dont know your city, so i picked newark as a starting point.  even if the package was 20lb and the dimensions were roughly 15x15x20, shipping would be under $15 for parcel post, so it won't be expensive to ship.   also, i have a paypal acct that my mom uses to sell stuff on ebay.  so, if you did want it, we could make the transaction, and you could have it pretty quickly. not that that's necessarily gonna happen, just saying. :)

I'm in Gloucester City, which is farther south than Newark but I don't think it would make much of a difference. I'm definitely interested in getting it, I'll get back to you about payment shortly.

I've got a 17" AOC model 7Elr sitting here wasting space.  Shipping isn't an issue - I live in Ewing and work in Center City.  Let me know if you're interested.

I never expected one offer, much less two. :whoa:

Thank you both so much! I'm going to send you both PM's in a few minutes.

Well, it pretty much died on me completely today, I really wasn't expecting it to go that fast, but maybe I should have seeing how fast it was darkening. I probably only have myself to blame, the calibration program probably accelerated the problem every time I had to turn up my desktop brightness.

On the laptop right now, trying to adapt to this keyboard again. You probably won't notice any decrease in my activity, and the last thing I did on my computer was make a backup CD with everything I've been working on lately. Not to mention I still have quite a bit of that stuff on here, never reformatted it like I had planned.

I've got a great monitor now thanks to odditude, but something in this house is causing it flicker/shake really bad when the refresh rate is set to anything other than 60Hz. I've turned off everything electronic except for the computer and monitor and that had no effect on it, so the only thing I can think of is it's something wrong with the wiring in the house itself. I'm used to 60Hz (It was the only thing the old monitor would display, despite supporting 70Hz according to Windows) so it's not a big deal, I'm just happy I have something as nice as this to use now. :cycle:
