General Discussion / Re: Gamefaqs + eternal stupidity

Terra. Her special ability (Morph) is much better than Celes's special ability (Run-stupid-ic).

Ha ha! That is so clever!

:picard:

I couldn't even get past the third page, I cannot tolerate GameFAQs-level stupidity anymore.

I recall having a game genie code that would turn the party into the ship on the world map, it's a shame they didn't make it fully functional but if I was coding the game I probably wouldn't have either. The idea of having shipping routes between towns is a really cool one, you could have ferries like FF6, makes me wish I was doing a more extensive hack, nothing like that would fit in mine.

I'm curious, does the overworld support having NPC's? It would be really cool to have a few ships sailing around, maybe even an airship flying overhead like FF2.

Finally got around to changing these, FF2us 1.1 offsets:

Protect: 0x1DA6A
Shell: 0x1DA8E

Gird's spell is at headered offset 0x1E897 in FF2us 1.1

I think it'll work out fine, especially if you balance the game with that in mind. The original annoyed me with the different EXP requirements a few times, especially Cecil and Kain in the beginning, Cecil gets his level up in a few battles, Kain takes forever.

This is something I hadn't even considered for my hack yet, I'll probably make it so that characters that join at lower levels gain levels faster until they reach the same average level the party should be at for that point in the game, then slow to the same rate as the other characters.

 I've never seen those before.
And, pray tell, where was this hidden chest in the Smith's house?

You need to go up the stairs then walk through the wall when you come back down. I didn't know about this one until a few years ago when JCE mentioned it was missing from the GBA version.

slightly tangential: what's with the bogus characters around "Thunder Claw" in the one screenshot?  that doesn't look like Japanese, but it sure ain't English, either.

Cavespeak. Pieces of various enemy and item names I squished together since I had so much unused font space.

also, what's with the background stripe through the dialogue boxes?  is that a normal in-game issue, an emulator problem, or a side effect of ROM hacking?

It's an emulator problem that was introduced in the newer versions of ZSNES when they removed a hack that made them display correctly.

Please tell me I'm not the only one who never found these before...

You can walk into this wall. :whoa:

And you can grab these two chests. I knew about the items being in there from my old Game Genie days, but I never knew there was an actual way to get to them without cheating.

The weapon shop has a wrath of Zeus instead of a thunder claw in the Japanese version. Easy Type has the claw like FF2us.

They're even accessible in the GBA version, unlike the hidden chest in the Smith's house.

hey, so i found a translation of the ffiv Settei Shiryou Shuu, an ultimania-like book about ffiv.  the website is here, in case anyone hasn't seen it:

Interesting reading.

Very. So this is the book that shot of Kain with white magic came from, I had forgotten the name. I used to have a scan of that screenshot, no idea where I got it from.

I'd be very interested in seeing a console-style RPG online, my biggest gripe with MMORPG's is that they're just...well, boring compared to console games. Actually, that goes for every RPG I've ever played on the PC, unless it was purposely designed to mimic a console game.

Final Fantasy IV Research & Development / Re: Save here?
« on: June 15, 2008, 05:58:52 AM »
Triple post

Apparently there was going to be an additional cancel string for when you canceled after selecting a file, not sure why they didn't bother using it, seems positioned incorrectly based on where "Done!" shows up:

And hey, I ended up showing off "Save here?" anyway. Note that I indented the "here" for consistency with "This data?," it's not like that by default.

Heh.

I meant to try connecting earlier but got myself distracted working on FF4 stuff.

No need to make another topic about this, since it also relates to the save screen. In the Japanese version when you canceled your save additional text would be printed next to the "Save" string rather than over it. This is very simple to restore, first go to headered offset 0xDE2D and change the $46 there to $44, then go to 0xDE34 and change that $46 to $4E, when you cancel the you'll see "Save Cancelled" instead of just "Cancelled." The first change was for "Save," if it hadn't been moved left one tile the full string would have spilled over onto the border.

Final Fantasy IV Research & Development / Save here?
« on: June 15, 2008, 05:33:17 AM »
Okay, this one is so simple I'm not even bothering with a screenshot. Once again someone got their string terminator and linebreak confused and used the wrong one on the save screen. Go to headered offset 0xDE4F and change $00 to $01 so your "Save" string isn't so lonely.

Final Fantasy IV Research & Development / Re: To equip
« on: June 15, 2008, 05:23:07 AM »
Yeah, that's what I figured but I don't see how "The" is any better. In either case, I'm still considering just cutting the message entirely, you don't get a message when you try to equip a weapon in the wrong hand or a sword with your bow. Unless it's a two-handed sword, but that's besides the point.
