Earthquake
« on: November 05, 2011, 11:09:54 PM »
I think we just had an earthquake...  Oklahoma had 3 earthquakes in the lat 24hrs I believe as well.

Stuff in the house swayed and we saw our tall curio cabinet swaying and creeking.   :scared:

Welcome to Texas, the only place that has literally every natural disaster possible.   :omghax:

^ you're not trying to induce a blizzard with that last statement, are you? :P

how often do you experience earthquakes down there?

living near Chicago, Illinois, i went almost the entirety of my life without experiencing any quakes whatsoever (at least any noticable ones), then we got two in a just under 2-year span:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2008_Illinois_earthquake
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2010_Illinois_earthquake

and i was fortunate enough to be awake for both of them at their weird hours.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_earthquakes_in_the_United_States

it appears Texas hasn't had any substantial ones for awhile, but i don't know how complete that list is.  California should be due for another one by the time you reply to this. ;)

Although I haven't had the misfortune of experiencing one, I would probably freak out. The only minor experience is one of the more recent ones a number of months ago... I can only imagine the reality...

I see you live near the borders of the state, JCE. I do as well. I felt the earthquake, but only the edges of it. also felt an aftershock. It more confused the hell out of me for a moment or two, as earthquakes in Texas aren't a common occurrence... It was my first "one." I hesitate to call what I felt an earthquake, given I was so far from the center I barely felt anything. The house shook some for a few seconds, and then a few seconds later it shook some more, but not as much as the first time.

Also, assassin, blizzards can happen in Texas. They're just rare(Though, not as rare as an earthquake).

So far we've felt all the shaking from the initial quakes in Oklahoma as well as a few of the stronger aftershocks.  Amarillo, Wichita Falls and as close as Abilene can get blizzards...but as you said they are very rare.  Amarillo seems to get them occasionally, but nothing like the northern border states.  Earthquakes happen down here too, but, they are caused by natural gas drilling or so the USGS tells us.  I just know it is quite a different feeling than being in a Tornado or Hurricane.  Those I can handle no problem, quakes are unnerving.

Haha, yeah, that was great. Made the local paper like it was some big deal (I suppose it was a pretty rare pairing). No damage for either, unless you want to count a leaky roof that had been an issue before both.
