Final Fantasy IV Research & Development / Re: Command Battle Messages
« on: November 07, 2011, 12:24:16 PM »
I wouldn't mind negating the messages altogether.  The messages for all commands other than Pray are pointless, and I was planning to make Pray 100% successful anyway.

However, I really don't understand how this works at all.  My hack has required no pointer modifications to this point.  I'm hoping somebody can walk me through one modification.  I'm sure I could figure out the rest from there.

Final Fantasy IV Research & Development / Command Battle Messages

Pretty much the only thing left to tidy up in my hack are the messages that pop up when a previously dummied-out command is used in battle.

The commands in question (your translation may vary):
- Pray
- Might
- Guard
- Tears
- Boast
- Regen

All come up with a nasty "D" message.  I need to rework the pointers, but this is something I do not understand how to do.

Frankly, I'd be open to just disabling the messages altogether.  Does anybody know how to do this?

Final Fantasy IV Research & Development / NPC Initial Visibility
« on: November 04, 2011, 08:28:29 PM »
Can somebody explain how NPC Initial Visibility works?

Phoenix says in his "NPCs" document that NPC initial visibility is controlled by 97400-9745F, one bit per NPC.  That is, what, 192 bits?  But the 192 number in no way comports to the actual number of NPCs.

The document goes on to explain speech data, but visibility is never described in any depth.  I can't figure out how to determine which bit goes to which NPC, or what the values should be changed to to alter initial visibility.  The values at the specified address are DB FE FC F3 BF E4 etc etc.  I would have expected something more like 00 01 11 10 01 or whatever.

What am I missing?

Some good news for me, and for anyone else this happens to.

I had only updated one guy in the Town of Baron.  The very first guy who appears in the code.  I switched him back to his original text values, and all of the weirdness in the Town of Baron was undone.

I'm not sure exactly what happened, since my new text did not bleed over into the next text block.  So, I wouldn't have expected the change to cause problems.  But, whatever.  At least I don't have to start over.

If anyone has any advice on ways to update townsperson dialogue without encountering this problem, I'm all ears!

Seems like townsperson dialogue is the only sticking point.  I've reworked tons and tons of scenes and none of that editing has caused similar issues.

I make a backup about once a week, but I did a ton of work this week.  So even if I do a direct compare, it's a lot of stuff to sift through.  I'm hoping someone can recommend a particular area to investigate.

Like, when you say NPC/map data...  Changing sprite values could be what caused this unwelcome change?  All I've done the last several days is work on streamling some of the more awkward parts of the dialogue and townsperson text.  But I didn't know if the triggers that I accidentally tripped would be somewhere in that section, or elsewhere.

Final Fantasy IV Research & Development / Help--I broke something!
« on: October 31, 2011, 08:09:44 PM »
I'm hoping somebody can tell me what I've messed up in my ROM hack.

Just started a new game so I could play through again from the start.  I found that several people in Baron and the Town of Baron are saying things that they aren't supposed to say until after Cagnazzio is defeated.  This is right at the very beginning of the game.

Everything else is like it should be.  The elite guard still blocks the entrance to the throne room, the Right Tower and treasure room are locked, etc.

The rest of the game seems to proceed normally.

So... what did I break and how can I fix it?

The Golbez hack that I was working on this summer is almost done.  I'm expecting a release around the Thanksgiving holiday.

All of the major work is completed.  I just have some polishing left to do.

I've posted about the project on my blog.  You can follow these links for details.

I kept Golbez's palette exactly as it was.  Edge was demoted from a playable to a non-playable character (think Siegfried but less weird), so his palette got demoted as well.  But I'm actually pretty proud of how he turned out with so few colors.

I have encountered two bugs so far:

- Any palette assigned to a playable character outside of the "normal" selection of palettes will fail to appear inside the Chocobo Forests.  I'm willing to live with this, although if I could find a fix, I'd take it.

- In some dungeons, Golbez does not display properly if you save, exit, and resume the game.  Not a huge deal since this is all on emulator anyway.

The Kain actor was used for Cid #2.  Cid rejoins when he rescues the party from the Tower of Bab-il, and he stays until you get the Big Whale.  Golbez then took the Edge actor's slot.

So yes, Edge is completely dummied out.  Or rather, converted into Golbez.  Really, I just switched the two characters.  Edge is the one who fights beside FuSoYa at the end of the game.  I did not take the "real" Golbez and try to turn it into a 100% playable character.  This seemed to me like more trouble than I could handle.  Much easier to take an existing character and change him into Golbez.

Nothing against Edge, but he is my least favorite and is less important to the story than Cecil, Kain, Rydia, or Rosa.  So he's the one who got the boot.  Edge is also the closest thing to what I think playable Golbez would be like.  So, using Edge means fewer tweaks are needed to stats, etc.  I even kept the portrait palette the same.

Wow!  Good work, man!  I missed this thread earlier.  Love the Fire4 (Firaja?), etc.  Looks great!

Yeah, I ended up using the (stupid) dummied-out Magazine item for this purpose.  Just replaced its normal event code with the Humingway Family shop.

Hmmm, you remind me.  I wanted to see about making a Call Shop item.
