Geocities closing - need a new free hosting service
« on: June 22, 2009, 12:34:27 AM »
So I logged into my Geocities account today, only to be greeted with the following message:

Quote
Important Announcement

After careful consideration, Yahoo! has decided to close GeoCities later this year.

You can continue enjoying your GeoCities service until then — we just wanted to let you know about the closure as soon as possible. We'll share more details this summer. For now, please visit the help center for more information.

Well that's just great. Are there ANY reliable free hosting services left?

By the way, now might be a good time to grab mblock129's FF3us patches, since I don't think they're available anywhere else and will be gone soon.

I suggest someone snag those patches and host them (with the author's permission) along with other FF3us/FF6 patches.  There really needs to be one central site for FF2us/FF4, FF3us/FF6 and FF5 patches.  And only those patches.

Yeah, we've already lost cklein0001's patches when AOL closed their hosting service... I really liked the 24-bit HP patch too.

Didn't assassin make a 24-bit HP patch?  I know I manually did it on one of my now defunct FF3us hacks.  *shrugs*

That might be complicated. Is mblock129 even around anymore?

I wish I still had that one.

119 bugs fixed and counting.

A solution might be to go ahead and host the patches and put a clear disclaimer that you are archiving them without the author's permission but would respect the author's wishes if they contacted you and wants you to remove them.  That's what I would do.

he's posted on the FF3us Gamefaqs board within the past month or two.  just a couple posts.  an "Attn: mblock129" topic would probably get deleted fairly quickly.  he's logged into mnrogar.com as recently as Jun 17, 2009, so try PMing him there.

also, the 24-bit HP patch wasn't me.  as mentioned, CKlein0001 made one.  the Pandora's Boxers might be making an improved one.

I did so about 20 minutes ago (as of this post). I'm counting on him seeing it or him reading his email to see that PM notification that the board sends out.

PB has an improved version of the patch, but I do not know what the plan is with it, or if we even have a plan for it. :isuck:

I can't believe I didn't try this one out before, been to your site many times.  :isuck:

I'd like to see this patch myself, but I know a lot of features are for PB-only and aren't to be released to the public :P

All of this Geocities talk got me into nostalgia mode, so I sifted through my bin to see what I had up there. There wasn't much, just some old WIP screenshots of PB with broken damage, a Winamp generated playlist, one of the sigs I had a ZD long ago, bloopers of the "most recent file" mod not quite working in the patches/NSFE pages, apparently an issue I had with FF2usME, a blooper reel of Jade's map editor, and two images of PB a week after the project started:

I remember that sig.

My Geocities account just redirects to Dbi (though I forget if I updated it after EP blew up or not), I think I have one or two photos saved there from back when I was still in school, but that's it. I don't remember my username or password anymore, so I can't check and see if I had anything else there.

The date has been set. October 26 will be the day it dies. Long live Geocities?
