I can't view PDF's... Why can't these people just use text and png like the rest of us?

I have never seen the benefit of PDF's over a simple html page, the fact that they completely lock up Firefox while loading unless you have an extension installed doesn't help their cause.

I think it's a "platform independent document".. which is what it is for the most part.

Open PDF files in a browser is a disasterous proposition... I'd swear it's the code for it, but I stopped caring for Adobe's software since it shouldn't require that much space and time (on older machines) to install the damn software.

 :wtf: :bah: :lame: :picsorstfu: :banonsmash:

I feel like such a dunce. Get this. The old sound card's connectors suddenly work fine. Get this. The new sound card's connectors is doing the same thing the old one was.

"It's your speakers then."

I hope not, these things are only a couple months old. The jack looks fine.

Well... Windows wasn't really designed to handle 2 sound cards.... well. So, one of them tends to have the priority.

However, I did have a 2 sound card setup one time. I had a modem-sound card combo in an ISA slot and a PCI sound card. I put the older sound card only to get proper MIDI output for FF7 (the fucking drivers were junk.. stupid Ensoniq-Creative crap PCI cards before the SB Live).

I also read your thread at RHDN. It is possible that your PSU could be failing... at supplying power. If your mobo has voltage readings in the BIOS or a utility it could use to measure it (though supposedly unreliable with those types of utils) such as SpeedFan or the older Motherboard Monitor.. see if the 5v readings are at 5v. IIRC, that's what those slots use for power, but my memory is fuzzy there.

I'm not using two sound cards. The new card has been removed for now.

Ugh, I hope not. It is the oldest of all the new hardware though (which is to say it's 4 years old).

If I can, I'll look for it.

hey leno, i was just going through some older comp stuff in my closet. i found some older sdram. i think it's a 16mb stick and a 32 or 64mb stick.  can you use them?

i also have 2 128mb ddr and 1 265mb ddr sticks if you can use those.

if you want any of them, cover a couple bucks for shipping and they're yours.

edit: one of the 128mb sticks may be bad. anyway, though, the others are still fine.

if leno can't use any of them, and someone else would like them, feel free to let me know.

Maybe, but then my ram total would decrease (or remain the same). This machine started out with 384 megs of ram (1 stick of 256, 2 sticks of 64). This board only uses SD ram. Thanks for the offer, though.

Well, yesterday I went and bought a new battery for this machine. Everything appeared fine, and it was nice to have a time that wasn't back in the year 2000.

But now it's today. Getting past post, and as if on cue, "CMOS battery low!" :bah: So, that makes 2 batteries bought for naught. I also bought one for my watch, but it appears as though the watch is completely dead.

In a bit of good news though, the onboard modem blocking the PCI slot was removed. It was snug in there, and the thing was connected to a bunch of pins. That frees up another PCI slot.

Regarding your onboard sound, have you checked to see if that's trigged by jumpers? Usually older comps have more jumper use than BIOS options.
No, it's a yellow block over the three ports. I don't see any jumpers near it.

I know you're probably in a worse financial situation than me but I'd seriously consider just saving up and buying a new computer.
That's pretty much what I have to do.

I'm doing that, except I've got no job so saving takes a long time. That, and I don't really know what's "good" and research only provides people trying to sell me things rather than tell me what and why I would want to.

That's why you ask (not in a store though). What you are told to buy generally has a lot to do with preference and more importantly, your needs/wants/demands.

I can help you with that, once you've gotten the money together.

Bite me. I'll bump my own topic if I want to.

You guys remember my monitor? I finally got my hands on a camera, and I can show you what it's doing.

As you can see, it's not good.

Added in some clarification.

Once again I must revive this topic. This monitor is on the verge, and not the good verge.

It started about a week ago, when it took about 5 minutes to warm up just so it will display. Then it accelerated to 25 minutes, and today it was 90 minutes. It won't be long, then I'll have to use my TV as my monitor until I get a replacement. :bah: This monitor has served me well over the last couple years, and it lasted my buddy for just as many years. Honestly, for an LCD, it lasted a really long time.
