I just started FFVI Advance.  The start button works at the screen now - no more bitching from the idiots.

FF2us still came out first. Mystic Quest came out after FF5 was out in Japan - and contrary to popular opinion it had nothing to do with us not getting FF5, you can blame FF6 for that.

you sure about that?

FF5 Japan release date = 12/06/92
FF6 Japan release date = 04/02/94
FF6 USA release date = 10/20/94

given it took them ~6.5 months to turn FF6j into FF3us, and there was a 16-month gap between the release of FF5 and FF6 in Japan, they had plenty of time.  they must have procrastinated to Hell and back in deciding whether FF5 should come here.  or they were more dependent on the Japanese branch for translating than i thought, as the US branch shouldn't have been busy with anything in 1993.

if FF6j development could somehow impede FF5 translation, then how did FF5j development not prevent FF2us from being made?

Blame a faulty memory. I thought I got that from an interview with Ted Woolsey, I could have sworn he said they decided to bring FF6 out instead of FF5, but all I could find was this one:

Quote
Q: Final Fantasy VI is going to be released as FFIII in the US,
with FFV being held over 'till 1995 to be released as a sep-
erate game. Could you explain this decision, and tell us
   about the games themselves?

A: The Final Fantasy series basically has two seperate tracks:
the odd series (FFI, FFIII, and FFV) are controller command
drive games, whereas the even series are more story line
driven games. As for FFV though, well although we're sure
it's a great title it hasn't been a hit with too many people
in out-focus groups, although the more experienced gamers
loved the complex character building - it's just not acc-
essible enough to the average gamer. But we're determined
we want to release it so we're going to wait and introduce
it once there's a larger audience for it's particular style.
   Hence the wait.

So I don't know where I got that from, it's possible I did read it in some interview but it's just as likely I remembered this one wrong. Interestingly enough while looking for this interview I found a newer one that makes it sound like MQ did impede FF5's release, even though that quote up there makes it sound like it was the focus groups' fault for not bring it out.

Well, there's some validity to that theory though.

FF5 is understandable given the prior NES FF's with class changing... (FF2 or FF3 NES introduced something along those lines).

I think they assumed it wasn't going to be embraced.. which in some way, that could be true...

His prophecy was fulfilled. It may have taken longer than he anticipated, but it did eventually come out once FF7 made the series ridiculously popular.

the user Arizonan posts a lot of wacky rambling, but i like his reply to ender1601 here:

^I have valid reasons to dislike the remake.
1.Look what happened to ff3&4, how am I guaranteed it will not happen to ff6?
2.Cutesy 3-D midgets and overly colorful graphics spoil the feel to ff6.
3.Do we even need a 4th incarnation?
4.The venerable SNES music shall be spoilt like never before! Listen to ff3!

And besides, most of u are just posers who think its fashionable and cool to prefer retro

Are you typing with your ass? I can tell. Either that or you have the mind of a toddler with Fragile X syndrome eating lead-laced food while having electric shocks administered to the brain.
Go away.

Yeah, we certainly never had those in the SNES version...

FF3 never really felt overly colorful to me, but then again, it had a pallet designed by a non-retard, unlike FF3DS and from what I've seen, FF4DS.

I got an EGM issue in the mail the other day(Joystiq was giving them out for free a while back.) that has a review of FF4DS. The colors, they kill me.

of course, the game is probably quite good, so I'll eventually play it. I don't let graphics get in the way of gameplay.

Meh, FF4 DS is just as colorful as the original was.

As for FF6, Kefka was in that post for a reason, the character and monster sprites are very colorful, especially if you contrast them with the murky backgrounds most areas use. I'll take colorful graphics over murky ones any day.

Like I said, overly colorful, not "it has a lot of colors."

FF3 and 4DS just seem to do nothing but throw colors at you, paying no attention if they look like crap together or not.

Could you link to some example screenshots or something? It's been a while since I played FF3, so maybe my memory of that one is bad, but I can't recall any area in FF4 that didn't use color in a realistic manner.

And now watch as ebmid2 destroys the psychology profession. No, seriously, he tries. However, I'm almost 100% certain that if he were a shrink, he'd be laughed out of the profession if he actually made those statements in front of his peers.

And then there's a generic troll claiming absolute knowledge, until Djibriel steps in a makes it worthwhile to read.

My father has a severe case of ADD and will not get treated (Or even diagnosed) with it because he doesn't believe it's a real disease. He gets distracted from anything by anything else so easily, when I point that fact out to him he completely ignores it. I'm amazed he's still alive with as many times as he got distracted while driving.

For fun I decided to answer the questions in that thread to the best of my ability, kind in mind I've never prided myself on knowledge of this game...now if I was FF4 these would all by 100% correct:

1: In FF6 Advance, what is the name of Cyan's weapon that has Wind Slash as a random added effect?
Kazekiri.

2: What "Type" of monster is the second form of the Behemoth King?
Undead?

3: What does Cid request Celes call him on the Solitary Island?
Grandpa.

4: Is it possible to dual wield the Ragnarok and Lightbringer?
Yes, if you steal another Ragnarok in the final battle.

5: How many enemies share the name "Magna Roader"?
Six?

6: Who leads the Returners?
 :banonsmash:

7: What is the name of the chamber in the Dragon's Den with the three switches that must be pressed to reach the room with Kaiser Dragon (or Omega Weapon)?
I haven't a clue.

8: What is the nearest town to the optional boss, Gigantaur?
Jidoor?

9: Can Celes use Runic if she has the Ichigeki equipped?
I'll go with no, I've never bothered equipping katanas on her.

10: Which Dragon lives in the Cultists' Tower?
White Dragon.

EXTRA CREDIT: Can the Ultima Buster be killed by being reduced to zero MP?
I think so.

There are two interactions with a stove in the game (as in: yields a result). Name both.
Gau's father's house and the Imperial camp at the cave to the sealed gate.

At some point, there’s a way to trigger the ‘Imperial March’ music while you’re in the Returner’s Hideout. How?
Step on a tile in the corner of the room where the wounded Returner is sleeping.

In the Collapsing House in Tzen, you die when you’re inside the house and the timer runs out. What happens if you’re OUTSIDE of the house while the timer reaches 0:00? To be able to pull this off, you just run out of the house while the boy is still inside.
No idea, maybe nothing?

There’s a FF VI community reference in the Advance game. Which one?
Ha, there are two, one for the casual players and one for the hackers:

1. A Figaro sentry pokes fun at Sky Render's retranslation and its insistence on spelling Kefka's name "Cefca."

2. "you must be one Lete son of a submariner to have found this"

Think of a way to produce a damage-dealing physical attack unaffected by Valor while that character should actually get the boost.

There’s one character who behaves differently when countering with a Black Belt. Which one and how?
I'm thinking it's probably Gogo, but I don't know for sure.

Status ailments affect Evasion, and I’m not just talking about Image. Name the status ailments that boost Evasion.
Vanish? Only one I can think of.
