Final Fantasy II *is* Easy Type
« on: July 06, 2008, 02:15:46 PM »

I'm fairly certain anyone with even a mild interest in Final Fantasy IV knows that the Easy Type version, which was released in Japan at about the same time the US got its Final Fantasy II, has many interesting changes that aren't present in any other version of the game. Nonetheless if you spend enough time on forums you will inevitably find people who use "Easy Type" and "Final Fantasy II" interchangeably, as if they were identical to one another, despite all the evidence to the contrary available via a quick search online.

However, this erroneous claim is what inspired me to make this hack. Every byte of data that was changed for Easy Type has been ported to the 1.1 revision of Final Fantasy II US, text changes have only been made for the two new swords and anything else that needed text, the rest of the game is left entirely intact. This is as close to what we would have gotten in 1991 had Final Fantasy II US been a localized version of Easy Type. I hope you enjoy playing through this under-appreciated version of Final Fantasy IV.

There's a couple of other pics that would've been appropriate, like the Eukaryote and Prokaryote casting Bio...

Wyvern/Dark Bahamut casting Poison/Venom.

Tricker casting Fire3/Firaga.

There's a few other obvious ones, but meh.

I had screenshots of most of those things, I just picked the ones I thought came out the best and showed interesting changes.

Hey, that's some fantastic work!  Now I'll assume you have the offsets documented on what was changed?  I might use your patch (with your permission of course) as a base for my latest hack.

All the offsets are the same between Easy Type and FF2us, all I did was copy pretty much everything over in large chunks, if you want to know where anything specifically was located let me know. Feel free to base a hack on it if you want.

I sort of figured as much seeing how FF2us was the base for FF4ET--it drives me bonkers when people say the reverse.  I never really bothered to look at the rom map for FF4ET.

Speaking of offsets (and sorry for the off-topicness): do you have the offset differences for version 1.0 and 1.1 of FF2us? I know you've been working on it, and I thought you might have more info in this area than I've collected so far.

Everything non-code or menu related seems to be in the same places in every version.

I was hoping you had the coding differences...but if not, that's OK. I'm already halfway through my hack using 1.0 (didn't think about it when I started) so I'll finish that with the offsets I have. For my next one I'll be using 1.1, though, so I'll need to figure out the coding offset differences for that. Thanks anyway.

I can post some things later, I've got the locations of a few subroutines I edited and most of the menu code has just been shifted ahead a bit. I'll make a thread in R&D when I get the chance.
