I've thought about this a lot, and maybe I've never been set with a particular weapon that Gau should be using at the end of the game, when you had access to the Merit Award..

What weapon is ideal for him? Many weapons easily boost him to 255 Attack Power, but that's not important at this point of the game. More importantly is the weapon he "should" equip to be most effective..

The only exceptions I don't want included is Tempest (I'm not interested) and Ragnarok/Illumina... for many different reasons.

Not the answer you're looking for but I never gave him anything, I didn't even realize he would be able to equip weapons with the merit award when I last played through FF3us. Only version I've played since I learned he could was FF6 Advance, which fixed this oversight.

I think the ability to use the Merit Award on Gau was intentional.. it just so happens that the devs didn't figure how much potential it had with how the Rages worked out. I mean, it's not as if the Rage command was removed from Gogo's command list at the very end.

Weapons to use?

You can use the Imp Halberd without the Merit Award which means you can give the guy Genji Glove and Offering. This will work in FF6 Advanced because I believe he can still use the Imp Halberd. Without the I.Halberd, Gau won't use a double attack. It's just one of the "just another way" to pull out an 8 hit "kills anything" set up.

If you are using the Merit Award but you don't want to hear about the Tempest/Ragnarok/Illumina...
What kind of weapon do you want him using? What about Drainer and an undead rage? He might be able to drain life away from other undead creatures. (Doubtful though. I've never really tested Relic Ring and Drain together which would be like doing the same thing.)

That's not an upgrade, since you have to be in Imp status to benefit. Bare fists are stronger by definition.

The target is what only matters with Drain weaponery, so regardless of whether Gau is classified as undead or not (from whatever means) is irrelevent. This idea is terrible  since the healing you get is based on any HP loss you have in the first place.

I guess it depends on whether or not you want Gau attacking twice. Considering you can use Offering and Bare-fisted IS better.
(However, Offering/Genji cheapness only works with Gau with the Imp Halberds. But that strategy on it's practically cheating on it's own.)

For real weapon's Gau could use;
Stunner has it's chance to cast stop and it's an easy 255 but that leaves Shadow without his best weapon.

personally to be honest i would just give him the imp halbred and or just leave his weapon slot blank. his rages alone (the good ones) are decent enough for an effictive and decisive battle.
