No. The game actually seems faster on 1 in terms of enemy attacks, I had to lower the battle speed because I was getting myself killed. Scarmiglione isn't nearly the joke that movie makes him out to be.

Well that's some good news.  I'm still on the fence about whether or not to buy this game (already own the GBA and SNES versions).

That's the ambush rating though, and I think enemies have their own initiative ratings.  For example, you rarely get ambushed by EARTH, but EARTH almost always attacks first during battle rounds.

Actually, looking at FF Hackster again, I misspoke.  I meant the unknown byte in enbytes.txt, which FF Hackster seems to have labeled as magic defense.  What did I do with that other byte... *looks at code*

Oh, it seems to be the element associated with enemy attacks.  Only the "stun" and "poison" elements are used, though.  I think FF Hackster is a little confused as to how elements and status effects work (which is understandable given how confusing it is).

So back to the "magic defense" byte, is this a 0-255 chance that a spell will completely miss?  It doesn't seem to affect the damage done by a spell.

Game Modification Station / Battle order in FF1

I'm looking into specifics of the FF1 battle engine.  Examining the monster data in FF Hackster, I think the "unknown" byte is the enemy's initative rating; that is, it determines how likely it is that that enemy will go first in battle.  What I don't know is what the actual formula is.  I assume that your character's AGI rating affects their initiative bonus, and possibly your level as well.  It should be something like:

Your initiative bonus = x*AGI + y*LV
At the start of a round of battle, everyone rolls a D20 (or D100, or Dsomething) and adds the value to their initiative bonus.  The round then proceeds with the highest totals acting first and the lowest acting last.

Anyone have any information on this?

The battles are only slow because the default speed is set to 4.

I still bet at the fastest speed, it's slower than FF4 for the Super Famicom on default speed.

Yep, I had the same problem a few weeks ago.

I watched the video vs. Scarmiglione, and all I could think of was how horribly slow-paced it looked.  That's something I detest about the 3D FF games; battles take 2-10x longer than they used to for the same number of actions taken.

If you're using Firefox with AdBlock Plus (or another ad blocking software), you probably need to disable it for gametrailers.com.  Some of their videos break when they try to show you an ad first and it gets blocked.

PNEOB has almost the same ring to it as PNEOP.

:wtf:

That would explain why Cecil always goes first, even though Edge clearly beats him out in agility. I wonder, is agility a completely useless stat then?

Agility definitely has an effect on the battle order.  Fight a few battles as soon as you get Young Rydia, and you'll notice that Cecil often takes two actions in a row, since Rydia's still at level 1.

The exception here though is if you have a "First Strike" and have Rydia positioned in the middle slot. Rydia will go first in this instance.

She'll go first, but Cecil will continue to take actions more often for the rest of the battle.  The game just "pre-fills" your ATB meter by a different amount depending on your battle position.  The faster characters still fill up faster.

Excellent!  It's the peninsula northeast of... what's that northeast of anyway?  :)
