FF1 into FF7 MOD

http://www.romhacking.net/forum/index.php/topic,12466.0.html

I usually keep all my opinions to myself when it comes to the ridiculous things people do when hacking ROMs, but am I the only one that thinks this is the biggest terrible idea in a while? How amazingly wasteful is it to look at an NES game and think "You know what would be great? If a playstation game with better graphics, battle system, and better everything, was mimicked by an NES game, which has worse everything and cannot possibly ever be nearly as good, or even contain all of the basic features of the game? I'll spend some years of my life doing that worthy project."

I'm not saying his hacking ability, pure ambition, or anything else are in question. I'm just wondering if anyone else thinks this is a ridiculously stupid idea. People can enjoy his hack as much as they please, I'm not saying he hasn't accomplished a lot. I'm just wondering if anyone ever shares my opinions on things like this.

Now, of course, you could say "This from the guy who makes another FF6 hardtype...." but we can argue that one on another thread

I'm kinda wondering if you really looked into this project much. Because the first thing that pops out at me is that your thread title says this is a FF1 mod. It isn't. This is a continuation of the translation project for the Chinese FF7 NES game. I just wanted to clear that up.

Now as to what you said about the Downgrade of FF7 to an NES game, I can say for sure that you are not alone. Not me per say, but I know a few people in the hacking/fangame community that don't "get" the appeal of retro remakes of later generation games. Personally I compare it to how some people prefer old black & white movies.

Overreact much to a pirate game?

I've already seen bits about the "FF4 NES" version and "CT NES" version. There's a limit to how much I don't care about these things. You can only do so much with the NES...

Considering that FF6 hacks these days need to evolve further from the "just hacking text/equipment/stats tweaks"... my standards for these hacks are significantly higher than the average person.

Concur. Putting in the time and effort into playing the same game really doesn't excite me. I'd sooner replay the original version of the game.
I think, to date, the best hack I've played was JCT2000's Hardtype hack.

I have Eternal Crystals which I'm assuming is also a great hack based on screenshots and website info, but until I can get my gamepad working (Windows 7 bullshit. Both gamepad and PS3 controller won't work for me), I won't be trying it out.
Pandora's Box (It's still in the demo/beta, isn't it?) seems promising though the demo I have seems like the original game for the most parts.

And isn't gogo13 (YOU!) and/or some other guy Dark(_____) working on a "all fixes" patch? Exciting.

----

My rom hack (shameless promo? Nah, one man projects'll take me a decade to finish) consists of me wanting to change almost every aspect of the game.
Abridged Style comedy rewrite (to the best of my ability), items/stats rehashed, make use of all the extra sprites I made myself (Arvis, Gestahl, Daryl, Sigfried, Vargas, ect.) maybe make some unique customs too. Alter the spells to give different characters 'roles' (artificial classes), and make boss fights a bit more epic or at least make 'em look cool.
All of which will take a long time to edit. Plus I'm OCD when it comes to testing immediate changes like graphics, battle scripts, ect. so it's a molasses process. (Mole asses, huh huh).

I think there needs to be a definitive rebalancing of FF6, because the story is amazing but the gameplay is completely disappointing although it has huge potential. From the reviews it didn't seem to me that JCE's hardtype really solves that issue, but I have heard it's good. This is why I still thought there was a need for my version and Pandora's Box

I don't think FF6 is really worth a complete mod into a new game, because the game isn't accessible for big changes at all. Newer games are made in a much more modular fashion and provide a much better base to work from, in addition to having better graphics.

Side note: I'm not in the "all fixes" patch team--but it does seem like a lot of people contribute to that.
