Title: Mysida Legend IN SPAAACE - is it Editable?
Post by: Bahamut ZERO on April 26, 2015, 12:51:46 PM
For my parody project I'm working on, I want to use the Mysida Legend IN SPPAAAACE visual as the very first thing that occurs when you start a new game, with different tect basically mocking the start of a Star Wars movie, but laying out some basic info on the state that the world of FF4 is in.
Now, I've got the visual going fine and all, and it doesn't cause any wierd behavior with the opening, it's just... I have no idea on how to edit the text. At first I tried editing the normal Mysidian Legend's text, not knowing that the text used in the IN SPAAACE visual is called from somewhere else. I've skimmed through Bank 1 and 3 in hopes of tracking it down, but so far no luck.
Is it currently possible to edit the text in the Mysidian Legend IN SPAACE via FF4kster? If so, boy would I be giddy as a five-year old!
Also, if anyone is interested, or currently trying to track down the message boxes for the normal Mysidian Legend, or the Prologue text for whatever reason, here they are:
Bank 1, Message 465 = Prologue text when Cecil and Kain leave Baron
Bank 1, Message 363 - The normal Mysidian Legend, told by the Elder.

I had assumed it was the same use of the message space as the original Mysidian Legend? Is that then not the case?

That's what I thought when I went to edit the original Mysidian Legend, but upon testing the space one stayed the same (I had it set up to play one, then the other to check).
The Mysidian Legend IN SPAAACE also happens to have a couple additional lines of text, which I never noticed until playing them back to back.

I feel that there is something good to have close at hand.

I had forgotten about that. I have never seen it before then, no. I imagine it shouldn't be too difficult to look up with a hex editor, just take the second occurence of the Mysidian Legend in ROM as that location.

Hnn, sounds like I need to look into a hex editor once i have everything going full steam again, though speaking of which I finally got your's and Chillyfeez's mods working in perfect harmony. :D
:offtopic:
Fun Fact: Shadow Mod will reset an actor's loading slot if you change their stats/levelup data. But if you do all of your stat/level up edits, THEN patch in Shadow Mod, it will load/save correctly.

In an unheadered rom it starts at 9E9C7 (so I guess headered would be 9EBC7).

Seeing as I now have some sort of grasp of things, I think it's time scoured around for a table file and get to work on this. Thank you very much for the offset, Pinkpuff!

You could make one pretty easily on notepad using the information here: http://rb.thundaga.com/tob/textencoding.txt

Hmm... seems I'm having a bit of trouble getting my created table file to work with HxD. Perhaps I messed up somewhere, or I've yet to figure out how HxD loads table files.
To be safe I added a header to my rom (since it said headered in the info) and renamed the table's extension to .tbl but so far no luck.
I have a feeling the few hexidecimals at the beginning that I left blank are the cause of my troubles, but I'm not quite sure being it's the first I've made. Back to experimenting!

I've never used HxD before, but generally, tbl files should have 1:1 or 1:2 entries. So, "00=Message Terminate," for example, may be screwing it up. Try instead
00=mT 01=sL 02=?1 03=mCetc for all non-character entries. Also, I can't tell if you are using them or not, but eliminate all unnecessary line breaks. Hopefully that helps...

It's very much editable though. I used Windhex32 to edit it. It's there in raw ASCII text, no special characters needed. Although, you may have to fix the timing... God, Project II was a thing of nightmares sometimes.
It's just plain text with a special effect over it. The ending credits are the same way. :)

After tweaking my table file a bit (removing everything but the font, numbers, special characters, and removing quotations from said special characters) still no luck.
I'm beginning to think HxD just doesn't have Table file support, being it's not listed as a feature in it's readme. I'm gonna try my luck with WindHex and see how that goes!

Even more reason for me to get ahold of WindHex! I think I know what you mean by the timing, if it's anything like how the prologue text is set up. And Project II is feat of pure awesomeness. I can't begin to express how much I like having it as the base for my project.
Edit:WindHex did the job! I need to mess around with some things (I think "...." in ASCII represents the space between lines), but I'm finally editing something I've wanted to for a good while. Thanks everyone! I want to find out how to shorten the length of time it takes for the visual to start (feels like 8-10 seconds), but for now I'm taking baby steps haha.
Edit:Got the text edited! I attached a teaser pic. Now to figure out how to change the visual's long start up time, and I'm golden!!

If you mean the amount of time between when the visual effect begins, and when the scrolling words first appear on the screen, check for a bunch of spaces and/or line breaks before the text begins. It might actually be that simple.

Hmm... i'm thinking it's more of a wait time on the visual itself, to go along with the lengthy "Ending 1" music that plays during the ending events, before the scenes leading up to Cecil and Rosa's ending. Which for right now I have that music going with the visual as it kicks off the game, at least until I figure out where to tinker with it's timing, and figure out how to port music so I can have the Star Wars theme blasting along to it. I think it would turn out both epic and funny at the same time (though my new "opening" text is completely serious, setting things up).
Fun fact: editing this via windhex felt almost exactly like I was dicking around in FF4kster after realizing that the "01"'s represented how spaced out a line of text is from the next. I still have no idea what "02" or "03" really do, although I made sure to keep them in to be safe. I put in a boatload of "01"s after the 1991 text, so the text you see in the teaser begins to disappear by the time the lengthy chunk of text describing what Baron's up to starts to display!
Fun Fact 2:Apparently "Ending 1" is not meant to be used outside of the ending events, as the second a sound effect plays everything turns into what could be best described as "sharting robots". Picture Oregon Trail being played off of a buggy Apple II emulator, that's what the music does!

I did the same thing on FF4J. I had a table file, but I was unaware that the text is readable without it. :\ Huh.
