On a more serious note, Bears defensive end Gaines Adams died Sunday morning. Preliminary reports state the cause as a cardiac arrest caused by an enlarged heart. He was 26.

R.I.P. Gaines Adams.  i wonder how long his heart was enlarged, and if there's anyway he could have known it short of a body scan or severe exertion.  he played in the Bears game Week 17, and even forced a fumble..  it's weird that somebody could have a ticking time bomb in their chest, especially a person so young.

I'll be the first one to take the plunge. After all, you guys need to catch up still. *shot*

Anyway, these are dangerous picks. On one hand, the last time the Vikings won a road game this year was that "homecoming" thing in Green Bay. The last time they won a road NFC Championship game? Too long, let's put it at that. For them, their first trip to the big game in 33 years is on the line.

The Saints host their first ever NFC Championship game. Home teams are 11-7 this decade in the NFC Championship game. Not the greatest win percentage. History is against the Saints in another matter, should they win this game, they will almost certainly lose the Super Bowl. History has not been kind to teams getting to their first "finals" appearance, in any sport.

For the Colts, it's almost business as usual. They are at the AFC Championship game like they have nothing better to do. Ironically, this is the first time they've gotten there while resting starters, and the Patriots don't stand in their way. An anticlimactic result, perhaps?

And then there's the Jets. "Really? Them?" Yeah, that's the one. Nevermind the fact that there's a giant boulder standing in their way in the person of Peyton Manning. Nevermind that they have a rookie quarterback and rookie head coach. Nevermind the fact that they had a 9-7 record at season's end. Every stat in the world says they lose this game.

"That's why they play the game!"

All of that said, here's my picks: Vikings, Jets.

Why? I can't go against my purple brethren now. My heart wants me to pick them, but my brain says the Saints cannot be stopped. My brain remembers the 2000 NFC Championship game, getting shallacked by the Giants 41-0. My brain remembers the pain of the 1998 NFC Championship game, and Gary Anderson made 50 consecutive field goals that season. If I take a hit for this pick, so be it.

And the Jets? This reminds me somewhat of a massive David vs Goliath scenario. A team that appears so overmatched, it looks like they stand no chance to survive whatsoever. I'll throw week 16 out the window, since that wasn't a good litmus test. The Colts snatched defeat from the jaws of victory that day, and for no real reason.

Plus this makes the ultimate Deathlike Doomsday Scenario. Since we can't have the ultimate Mercury Morris Doomsday Scenario, I'll have to settle for this one, instead.

strategy: we should all pick different combinations of winners/losers from here on out, so at least one of us is ensured (?) to finish at or above .500 for the playoffs. ;)

I'm pretty much set on Saints vs Colts. The real Doomsday scenario is if the Vikings lose. Then I will rant about the Favre.

:edit: I will poke holes in your points Leno... a bit later.

Touché.

Personally, if the Vikings do lose tomorrow, I'd rather it be in the fashion of the '98 title game instead of the '00 title game. Losing in OT is much better than getting destroyed 41-0.

Back-asswards logic? Maybe. Yes, I know about Gary, I don't need a reminder. It's the sum that is the point, not the parts.

In any event, both of these should be great games. :childish:

(5) Jets vs (1) Colts - Colts, 24-18.  I've picked against the Jets two weeks in a row, and gotten burned for it, but I'm not done yet. :P  They didn't beat the Chargers by much, and had the Chargers not missed 2 kickable field goals (I'm ignoring the third from 57 yards, because that's crazy distance) and thrown 2 interceptions, the Chargers would have won that game.  Their questionable onside kick near the end didn't help, either.  The Colts' running game is slightly more abysmal than the Chargers', so it comes down to passing comparison between those teams.  Manning passed for more yards and more touchdowns during the regular season, but Rivers had the better QB Rating and TD/Int ratio.  Still, I think Manning can avoid throwing 2 interceptions against the Jets.  Like most QBs, Philip Rivers is a mental midget compared to Peyton Manning.  Just look at his picture:

http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/6763

The guy is clearly a doofus.  The Jets have a better record on the road than at home, so they're not fazed by hostile territory, though the Colts have a slightly better home record than the Chargers did (7-1 versus 6-2).  In their regular season matchup, New York won 29-15, but that was against Indianapolis' bench warmers, so it doesn't mean much.  However, it does mean that Manning didn't get to prepare much against the league's #1 defense, tapes aside.  Against common opponents, Indy has the edge.  NY split their series against New England, while Indy edged them out; NY minorly lost both games to Miami, while Indy beat them by a little; NY split against Buffalo, and Indy lost to them big in a meaningless final game.  Both teams beat Houston, but NY did so more decisively; both teams beat Tennessee, but Indy did so more decisively; and Indy edged out Jacksonville twice, while the Jets lost to them by a tiny bit.  It's not unexpected that a 14-2 team did better against common opponents than a 9-7 team, but figured I'd crunch the games anyway. :/  Speaking of records, Indy's is superb, and could have been even better, and New York's is unimpressive.  But a weak regular season record hasn't stopped them from getting this far, nor did a strong one do much for San Diego last week.  The Colts' defense is slightly inferior to the Chargers' in most areas (except in points allowed somehow), so New York will probably have another solid running game.  Sanchez just needs to stay fairly error free.  He wasn't hot stats-wise last week, but I still like his poise.  However, the question is whether his defense will get key turnovers to put him in a position to land another TD pass.  The Jets could march the field running last week, but they weren't able to score a ton that way.  They still needed help from their defense (and Mssrs. Rivers and Kaeding).  If Indy had shown more rust after resting and losing their last 2 regular season games, I might go against them.  But they won definitively against the Ravens, and managed to shut down their one-sided offense.  The Colts knew what was coming, and held Baltimore to 87 yards rushing.  I think New York will still be in triple digit yardage there, but they'll probably need to have more success passing than they did last week in order to win.  Indy's defense wasn't impressive in the regular season, but they can be quite overbearing in playoff games I've seen in recent years.  So I like the Colts.. yes, boldly picking the 14-2 team. :P

Good job Leno. The Sanchise scored as much as their season average... but that Jets defense was figured out, like before.

The only mystery was how long it took before Peyton figured it out. It was before the half...

(2) Vikings vs (1) Saints - Saints, 29-27.  Both teams won big last week against solid opponents, and both by 31 points.  Now, the Saints were facing a swiss cheese defense, but they managed to shut down a first class offense.  The Vikings dominated their game on both sides against a more balanced Cowboys.  The Saints had a slightly better record in the regular season, and arguably could have been 2 better if they showed up against pathetic Tampa Bay the second time.  Home field advantage should be somewhat meaningful.  Favre fares well in the Superdome, but the Vikings were a mediocre 4-4 on the road this year, while the Saints were a strong 6-2 at home, and we saw what a rockin' loud place their turf was last week.  Against common opponents, I'd give a slight edge to New Orleans.  Both teams understandably beat the Lions by solid amounts; Minnesota lost to Carolina, while the Saints split them (albeit their loss was meaningless); both teams beat St. Louis, but Minnesota did more resoundingly; and both teams thumped the Giants, Minnesota moreso.  Brees was sackable this year, and after what the Vikings defense did with Cowboys and the Romo last week, I think Drew will see his share of frustration.  Not as much as Romo, as the Cowboys o-line is crappier (based off reg. season sacks anyway), but some.  Conversely, the Saints showed their ability to frustrate a great passing offense with a veteran QB last week.  Now, the vikings are more balanced than Arizona was. ... Damnit, the game's gonna start, so I'll stop typing now.

^ really, i have no conviction on this game.  i just as easily could have spat out "Vikings, 28-24".  if home/road were switched, i probably would have switched in kind.  they're two great teams.  should be fun to watch.  was dead tired earlier, so slept through the whole AFC game.  a shame, as it was a good one, from what i read.

I said this long before the season started... Favre will make the play to end a season.... he did just that.

This was an epic game... Vikings gave away the ball too many times, when it was looking like Peterson was the fall guy. Saints gave that advantage and the time of possession back with penalties. However, when Favre was making the critical play to set up the FG for a win by running with the ball, he makes the sin of all QBs and put it into the worst position... OT and losing the coin toss. Favre wasn't going to be the goat, but he put it back on his head.

Congrats to both teams for making it more interesting than the early game.
