Final Fantasy IV Research & Development / Re: FF2/4/4A Run Behavior

Heinous bump! I forgot that I even had an account here …

I remember reading that the chance to drop Gil is 25%. Where I got that from, and whether or not it’s accurate, I can’t fathom.

2
How so?

I always assumed that the party-targeted versions of Quake and Meteo were distinct spells, since their targeting is forced for the player.

With Loki’s Lute?

Well that’s really very nice, Deathlike, but I’m still wondering why you said earlier that he was a “P.O.S.” against Zeromus.

4
So can the party-targeted Quake also be used under the influence of Confu? That Meteo can be cast strikes me as an oversight in design, but then again, there aren’t any Cunfusing enemies late-game, right? Or did those Selene Guardians cast it?

(Also: can anyone say “Mindflayer”? FF1 names can go right ahead and die, kthx. :laugh:)

5
So monsters do have multipliers and evasion stats that are normally ignored, or …?

On the note regarding Palom and Tella: is the intelligence stat really that inconsequential in magic damage? It’s FF1 all over again …  :lame:

Boast (+16 Wisdom.... supposedly anyways)
Yep, goes as high as 99 and no further. No effect on the derived magic defence stats.

Of course, if this is incorrect, do enlighten us. It would be wonderful if Porom’s intelligence could be raised further, because it would make a case for his inclusion in an FFIV Advance party.

Oh, if you care at all, these are better choices for translated skill names, in my opinion:

Dark Wave = Darkness
Gird = Endure
Cry = Crocodile Tears
Spirit = Psychic Wave  o__o

Could you post the FF2us's Addresses for command attributes and graphics, I thought I found them but lost my paper work notes on them and I'm still having trouble with Yang's Edure command causing him to blowup with some white/blue flare effect.
Query: why would you wish to hack FF2US, when there’s the original SFC version (which is superior) …?

Right, Hide has no tactical application whatsoever. :wink:

Anyway, you said that Gilly would be a “P.O.S.” against Zeromus in FFIVA, now that you knew that Protes and Shell were ineffective in that battle. This would suggest that you are referring to his “Chant” ability, which replaces Sing upon equipping the Harmonious Ring, and is a free, instantaneous casting of both Protes and Shell at once. However, this is only obtained after beating Zeromus, not before.

And.. WTF?!?!?!?!? I thought Shell would be useful. Edward in FF4A now looks like a POS vs Zeromus. Mind you, he is very capable if you max out his stats.. (I should run the numbers at some point).
Wait, the numbers and the Zeromus thing aren’t common knowledge? I read that on a Japanese fan site ages ago.

Besides, if Gilly has the Harmonious Ring, you must’ve already beaten Zeromus. Also, he’s far from a P.O.S., with or without it …

Are there any other instances of battle scripts altering enemy stats during a battle …?

Having said that, Protes and Shell work perfectly fine, so you’d think this would too.

It probably matters little in the scheme of things, anyway, since Caggy has multi-Boast’d Thundara to deal with by this point. :omghax:

Yeah, that’s a great — wait a sec! Oooh, you’re trying to trick me! >:(

Instant game overs in scripted battles aren’t really … good. :finger:

Well, normally, Yang and Edge are never in the party together. This appears to have been a file I manipulated with cheat codes. (Not a big deal, just jumping the shark, I guess.)

143(8F): ルビカンテ「ここは わたしのまけだ だが
Rubicante: My defeat and end are both here marked. Regardless …

106(6A): 「いつのひか かならず よみがえる
… on another day, I shall stand before you once more!

005(05): 「さらば
Know this, until next we meet.

It’s always nice when Moriyama’s translation is shown to have its competent excerpts. I hope the DS localisation team give Rubicante the right tone in their translation. :finger:

Who's dumb idea was it to have Tellah speak in the Dark Elf's battle? He is the first to die in that tri-elemental sequence of attacks.
The only way to make his speech sound legitimate is to cast Reflect/Wall on Tellah. I don't know why he was even scripted to talk normally.

You mean this?

012(0C): テラ「くっそー‥‥
Tella: Cu—curses …

Seeing as the status induced in FFIV at 0 HP is not really “dead” or “swoon” (pah!) but actually “Unfit For Battle”, I hardly find it surprising that Tella is able to express a breath’s worth of distaste for his situation as he tastes Crystal Room floor polish. :wink: Unless there’s some other line I’m not remembering that’s also thrown in there?

13
Aha, so the battle was meant to end with dialogue, but … doesn’t the overwhelming majority of the time. Could you tell me which box is called after, to fulfil my curiosity? :D

14
I’m sure I remember giving more than 99 Potions to the Chubby Chocobo (my favourite translation, since it’s both accurate and appealing) in the SFC version, and them vanishing, though …

Don't forget the bad coding...the worst coding ever.
FF1’s is likely worse, since it seriously impacts gameplay. Spells that just plain have no function, Int. having no bearing on spell damage …

Heh. Remember the portrayal of those programmers in the developers’ room?

Anyway, I take it this is Rubicante’s line being referred to?

143(8F): ルビカンテ「ここは わたしのまけだ だが
“This marks my defeat — and yet …”

Seems pointless. Is there another one following it? (Battle text is apparently out of order in the ROM — though the staff’s comments are amusing.) Does he start using another attack at this point, at the very least?

I guess either something was to be made of this and it was forgotten, or a battle programmer mistakenly made it an extreme rarity for the dialogue to be called.
