Two new patches: Turn Around, Off the Hook
« on: May 17, 2016, 10:10:34 PM »
Hi everyone! Life's getting pretty busy for me right now, so I don't know when my next patch (or two) will come out, but today I have a couple of new ones for y'all.

The first, called Turn Around, is a tweak that adds eight new movement event codes that can be used by hackers. Normally I don't cater to hackers outside of bugfixes because of how broad hacking is, especially with FF6, but this patch simultaneously fixes the glitch of how the party turns around to face MagiMaster on the Fanatics' Tower roof. Now instead of always facing right and then up, they will do so ONLY if they were originally facing down; otherwise, they will simply face up. This bug could easily have been fixed by just removing the "face right" event, but the beauty of this patch is that it preserves the slow about-face if the party is facing down by using the added movement event codes, for which I'm hopeful that hackers can find good uses.

The second is a minor glitch fix involving the hook that hangs outside the Phoenix Cave. If you grab the hook at just the right time, your party member will actually slide up the pulley above the hook. It's nothing important, it just looks a little odd. This patch removes that oddity.

:edit: September 18, 2016
Off the Hook has now been ported to GBA. I really should stop and take a break, but at least the event bug patches are easy enough to port.

:edit: July 13, 2017
Off the Hook is now ported to PS1.

I didn't know about either of these bugs. It's not easy to keep up with all the bugs in this game, though. In fact, at first I thought "Off the Hook" was the Kefka's Tower invisible hook bug (the one where you can grab the invisible hook to leave the tower).

On the first area of kefka's tower, when you are using the 3rd group, there is an event that shouldn't be there (you can see it using ff3le), I guess it was used for testing and they forgot about it. You only have to move it where you can't reach it, that means, changing a single byte.

I think we need a good central repository of bug descriptions. It would really help with quashing the bugs.
5/31/16 - I have an assembly of the battle portion of C2, relocated to the F0 bank, which has both vanilla and patch code in my dropbox. I'll be updating it with additional patches as I have time. I will *not* be releasing it publicly, but ask me for the link and I'll share.

If I see a complete bug list of this game I think I would commit suicide. It was, when I saw Master Zed's "Bug FAQ" on gamefaqs (really long ago), and it almost made me cry...

between Master ZED's guide and the two mega threads on Mnrogar's Den, a vast majority of the bugs are covered.

Maybe we should make a page on SlickWiki and create a database of all the bugs. I'd like to see, for instance, a table with the following information for each bug: a short, well-identifying title (stuff like "Psycho Cyan Bug" or "Sketch Bug" for the more well-known bugs and a short sentence for the lesser-known ones); a blurb about the effects of the bug; and a "status" (e.g. fixed, not fixed, fixed w/flaws).

I'll re-emphasize:

I'd like to see, for instance, a table with the following information for each bug: a short, well-identifying title (stuff like "Psycho Cyan Bug" or "Sketch Bug" for the more well-known bugs and a short sentence for the lesser-known ones); a blurb about the effects of the bug; and a "status" (e.g. fixed, not fixed, fixed w/flaws).

I agree, and I was pondering whether to get the ball rolling on just such an effort. As far as organizing it, I'd suggest starting with a short name of more commonly known bugs. Then go on to the cause (if known). Since one cause can result in many manifestations, this would make it more efficient, and also would address the fact that one fix that corrects the root cause will also quash all the symptoms.  Finally, a status as to whether the bug is fixed or not, preferably with links.

Some of the more complex bugs could have a page all their own. That would allow breakdowns of version-specific bugs, discovery and patch information, and interactions with other bugs.

The thing is, I don't feel that I am quite qualified to do that. Of course, that's a poor excuse, because anyone can edit a wiki.
:edit: OK, fine, I started one. Let's see if we can improve on it.
