Title: The generic "we did something to the forum that broke it" thread
Post by: Lenophis on June 03, 2008, 01:28:14 AM
To anybody that tried to access the forum for a couple hours, my apologies as it was down. No thanks to an unexpected error, (whee syntax!) it was stuck in upgrade mode for a long time, and it was one step that needed to finish before it could complete itself. Things should be back up to normal now.

I fixed up a few things that got broken during the installation. If anyone comes across anything that doesn't appear to the functioning correctly please let one of us know.

This is one of those few times where I think it's a hassle.  :finger:

Unless it's like a major security update, I have problems justifying downtime unless it's scheduled/planned outage.

Meh, there's never been an issue with an update before, this one was just a pain in the ass for some reason.

This is the only reason I took the forum down this afternoon:

That's 4362 errors caused by things this update broke, all of which were relatively painless to fix. Did you notice the arcade and theme switcher missing? How about the overhauled PM menu? I didn't, until I went looking for them, that is.

Edit: Oh, and the YouTube and spoiler tags. Basically anything that modified the default theme's template got busted.

Reusing this topic, I'm installing some new mods, so if something is broken ignore it for the time being, I'll have everything back to normal in a few minutes.

Alright guys, if you go into your profile you now have a little notepad and comment box. No one else can see your notepad, it's just a place where you can leave little reminders for yourself. The comments are public though, see Leno's profile for an example.

There is also a new notification for PM's, a new option to post a poll, and Leno's getting something else fun set up right now.

Although you probably won't notice any difference all of our other mods have been upgraded to the newest versions, something I didn't bother doing before.

Heh, that's a built-in feature I never enabled before. It's not staying though, I'd use it if it replaced the default news box but having two of them is pretty stupid.

After doing a lot of tinkering, we've added a mood feature as well. The mood will display after your avatar and text (if you have any), and you can set it in your profile, at "Forum Profile Information." Enjoy!

Are you talking about the icon that appears next to the thread in the index? (http://slickproductions.org/forum/Themes/purple/images/topic/normal_poll.gif)

If not, I'm not sure what you're referring to.

Post by: Deathlike2 on June 12, 2008, 01:57:37 PM
When you try to create a new thread, there's a section where you try to create a poll. There seems to be something missing icon/picture in that area.

 :hmm:

I installed a mod that allows you to create a new poll from the index (Notice the "Post new poll" tab in the toolbar?), maybe that changed something, but I don't see any missing icons. Perhaps a screenshot would better show what you're talking about.

 :wtf:

That's strange, I thought it might have been a birthday mod I installed but removing that didn't fix it. This one might take a while.

Also, what's a good present for someone's 930th birthday...? :shadow:

Edit: Well, I found the cause but I have no idea how to fix it. For the time being I'm going to leave it alone.

Edit 2: Birthdays have been fixed by switching to a different mod to get colored names. I'm not sure if remnants of an old version of our old mod were causing a problem with the calendar or what but this mod seems to work just as well and it also fixes a problem we had with the old mod where searching was causing tons of errors.

Anyone here use 800x600 resolution? The new links we added to the menu bar pretty much broke it at that resolution, I can shorten the link names, or remove them entirely if it's a big deal.

As of today, a PM limit of 50 has been enabled. Anybody currently over that limit has 1 week to get under the limit. Failure to do so will result in us sicking Banon on to your inboxes, where he will smash it all to nothing (inboxes will be emptied). :banonsmash:

Forum's been updated to version 1.1.6. I wasn't going to bother with this update, when I tried it two nights ago it wouldn't let me apply the update and told me to uninstall all our modifications and update manually--updating manually is what screwed everything up with the 1.1.5 update so I decided not to bother with it. Tonight I decided to click the update link again to see if I could get a list of files that were having problems and it was able to update just fine. I guess there was just something wrong with the first patch, everything seems to be working flawlessly but like always let us know if something is broken.

Bah, I forgot to give you a status update about that. I can't find the mod I used to make that a togglable option, I can either enable the notification or disable it for everyone, I'd rather not disable it. I could've sworn I had made a post about that, but I guess not.

Anyway, what I originally came here to say, I just updated to 1.1.7, if anyone has any issues let me know.

New avatars are up. The new selection comes from MM1-MM6, and MM9. Most of the MM7 and MM8 avatars are too big, though if the NES recreation hack/homebrew pans out we can add those instead.

:edit:

I'm still working on the Wily bosses, and I'll get those up as soon as possible.

:edit:

Got them up. There are some missing, most notably from MM3, because they were too big.

For the Wiimote battery count, please have a mini-representation of a Wiimote, and instead of putting in a number, represent with the number of icons used.

For every 5 or 10 batteries, use a battery or something creative to represent that number (think of it like Roman Numerals or something).

In preparation for the 1.1.9 upgrade (and to help Leno's sanity with the backup process) some pruning has taken place. And by "some" I mean one thread, Gaming Progress. There might be more pruning on the way, that'll depend. If anything breaks, I probably did it. :whoa:

:edit:

Ok, we're up to 1.1.9 now. If anything happens, blame me for it.

In keeping with the streamlining, all attachments from the 2007 calendar year were removed. This freed up about 2.1 megs of attachable space.

That'll happen every once in a while (getting the backup is an 8-10 meg process, which on dialup takes an hour).

Compression, compression, compression. Ideally, if you get MPPC compression for any of your dialup numbers, you'll be a slightly happier dialup user (you will need software compression enabled though for your dialup connection).
Title: Re: The generic "we did something to the forum that broke it" thread
Post by: Lenophis on June 15, 2009, 04:13:14 AM
I see no option for software compression, but modem compression is already enabled by default. Believe me, I've tried to squeeze everything out of this connection as I could (even had it connected at 56 a few times) but the stability went out the window.
Title: Re: The generic "we did something to the forum that broke it" thread
Post by: Deathlike2 on June 15, 2009, 07:11:42 AM
It's there. Use this link as reference: http://www.techspot.com/tweaks/winxp_modem/

I suggest unchecking "enable modem compression" as you will connect with modem compression by default if no software compression is enabled. That option forces hardware modem compression. Also, don't enable the "multilink" connection option... if you get lots of errors in your connection with the ISP, this is more often than not the culprit.
Title: Re: The generic "we did something to the forum that broke it" thread
Post by: Lenophis on June 15, 2009, 01:07:41 PM
Software compression was already enabled, as was hardware compression. This modem is an external, good ol US Robotics v.97. Software compression would not apply here.

Whether or not it actually helps anything (probably won't) remains to be seen.
Title: Re: The generic "we did something to the forum that broke it" thread
Post by: Deathlike2 on June 15, 2009, 07:29:36 PM
Well, if MPPC is available for a specific number for your ISP, you can see it in the Connection Properties... 2nd tab.

http://www.air-internet.com/support/optimizemodem/OptimizeModemXP.htm

The pic is wrong  :bah: :lame:, but that's where you'd find out. It's specific to the number you are connecting to, and not an ISP provider specific thing. Usually, the ISP's numbers are provided by various other providers that are outsourcing the stuff. I'm not sure how much you pay for service and what you get.. but if you're paying > $10 for dialup (well, other than the insane phone bill), you're probably being ripped off.

Ok, the broken themes have been decimated, deleted, and shredded. Afterwards, they were replaced with new themes. To make sure no issues would come up, I reset everyone's theme back to the crappy default, and I encourage everyone to switch. There's more themes to choose from, as well. Enjoy.

We've somehow missed the RC4 upgrade, but that's ok, cause we're on RC5 now. This upgrade should fix the bug of people getting logged out at random. It turns out that spambots/assholes are trying to log in as you, causing you to be logged out.

didn't our usernames above our avatars to the left of our posts used to be color-coded based on "level" (e.g. administrator, moderator, etc.; so Deathlike2 was blue and Lenophis was red)?  now everybody's is orange.  i think i'm remembering right, anyway.
Upgrading to SMF 2.0 broke some color-coordinated things, so we've been kinda bland since that upgrade. :bah:

but your posts indicate you upgraded to SMF 2.0 on April 20, 2010.  i could swear we had color-coded usernames to the left of our posts until very recently.  far more recent than 10 months ago.

Since the server move:

Avatars and attachments did not work (now fixed).
Funky line going on with all themes (now fixed).

Report anything out of the ordinary.

The Rank avatars are broken.

Don't know how, but the ranks weren't copied over, despite everything being buried in sub-directories. No reason why they shouldn't have been. Oh well, fixored. I'm thinking there was an easier way to set it, but oh well.

On this forum, there used to be tons of avatars to choose from. Now there are only a few that do not even work. Fix this please!

I think you mean "Now there are only a few that even work." The words "do not" in that sentence make it seem like only a few are malfunctioning, while the rest of the sentence makes it seem otherwise.

I'm only correcting your grammar here as I know you're not a native speaker. I hope this is helpful for you.

No, I actually meant there are a few to choose from, but they appear to be broken.

Nvm, this seems to be fixed.

were there recent server changes?  mnrogar's is broken with the "Not able to open ./cache/data_global.php" message again.  one thing this does is prevent the Captcha from displaying, which we don't care about for new users since we're not currently accepting them anyway, but it IS an issue for existing users who forget their passwords for a handful of login attempts, because they will need a Captcha to get in after that.  and they're screwed if it doesn't display.

Well, something did happen, because I had no way of making any file changes to the site for the past month. DKK and Mnrogar had the same issues. I've been working so much that I wasn't able to bring it up with Hypher until this last week. :bah: Server permissions have been restored, at least.

So, we're back! And I may have broken everything in the process! I'm working on it! :p :picard:

I guess the one good thing that came out of this was the server database never had to be restored, since it was never destroyed at all. :cycle:

Indeed! I was starting to get a little bit worried. In the interim though Chillyfeez and I may have encouraged a few others to look into FFIV Hacking so it wasn't without its upside.

the Dragonsbrethren link just redirects to this forum, so i'd refine it to:
http://dragonsbrethren.slickproductions.org/dbi_archive/

some good reading there.

I don't know why his site redirects like that. I know he has content, but for some reason it's not working. :bah:

I also think it's hilarious that trying to toss in wiki support allows me to find what I need to add buttons to the top bar like that. It eluded us for so long. :bah:

ok, code blocks are illegible in the blueandyellow theme (though highlighting solves that).  see http://slickproductions.org/forum/index.php?topic=1964.0

any way for admins to force a dark block background in this theme?

Maybe I should just get rid of the blueandyellow theme? It looked good at first, but there's been a lot of complaints about it already since last night.

i think it's worth keeping and ironing out the kinks.  it's mostly nice, with the main problem being that bold text (e.g. forum titles) is kinda hard on the eyes.

I'm glad slick forum is back up again! I have notice the home button link to the forum index page and the index button to slick home page... Shouldn't it be the the way around? :hmm:

Also, it's pretty cool to see a wiki link. Do you guys plan to cover FF4 to FF6 in the wiki and how will/would it differ from datacrystal?

I'd love to see all of this put in to a wiki that's regularly maintained.  I would do it but I suck at the internets.  :)

another offender is 2nd level quotes.  ex:

i like trucks

i too like trucks.

3rd level and beyond seem okay.

and very minor: the "Post" and "Preview" buttons lighting up when the cursor's over them, you can't read what they say.  could hurt those with amnesia.

didn't the older SMF resize avatars if they're too big, or at the very least tell us what the pixel or filesize limitations were?  this one's quite mum on the matter.

This one should be, and I'm fairly certain the limit is 128x128. I'll check it out.

Oh how right you are. Until this site went down and some of you guys started vacationing at the romhacking.net forums I had no idea of the magnitude of what this place contained. I can't tell you how many times I was looking for something and someone would say "Well, when the slick forums are up and running again..."

As someone working on their first major hacking project I can't tell you how valuable it is to suddenly have access to such a community and such detailed info on the very game that I intend to butcher *cough* I mean the game I intend to hack (FFIV).

Glad to have you here SunGodPortal! Yes, this is the repository of FFIV hacking information on the web, without doubt. I would love to see what the Japanese side of the river has found though, Tomato might be willing to share that with us eventually.

While I'm fairly sure I have a backup of those, I wouldn't begin to know where to look for it :bah: :lame:

Honestly though, most of them were just grabbed from the web. It shouldn't be too hard to get those again. It looks like everything is still in place for them, including names and post counts, the sprites just need to be added to each theme's directory. (I seem to remember I had an extension installed that would read them all from one place rather than duplicating them, hence that ranks directory.)

Looks like archive.org is missing 777.gif, pretty sure that's the only custom one that's gone.

I noticed the user statistic page text is messed up in some places. Not a top priority, maybe it has to do with my theme too. It's like that on my laptop and desktop PC.

I myself have a lot of these small UI tweaks to do on ff6hacking.com. There is so much one person with a job and personal projects can do though...
