super mario universe 2 help?
« on: August 17, 2009, 01:37:29 PM »
i posted this over at smwcentral a few days ago and haven't gotten a reply yet. i know it hasn't been long, but i figured i would post here too, in case someone has played the hack.  anyway, from the smwcentral forums:

ok, i give up. i need help in super mario universe 2. i've been looking for an alternate exit in this level on and off for the last 6 months and am now frustrated enough to ask. the first level in "space" called "seasons of floria", has 4 "parts" each corresponding to a season. i found 3 odd tiles in the level, but they do nothing and lunar magic(after a few months, i resorted to looking at it in lm) regards them as "air". one is a smiling mole-looking thing, one is a white(gloved?) fist that looks like it's pounding on the platform it's on, and the third i found in lunar magic but can't figure out what it is. it's in the sky in the autumn part of the level. the screen does not scroll up, so you can't really fly up to it and look around. anyway, i'm sure someone has beaten this, so please, what's the secret?

I couldn't tell you since I haven't played that hack.

Here's a few tricks to find secrets in SMW hacks in general...

1) Fly everywhere. You'll never know what you'll accidentally run into.

2) Fall into holes... sometimes it's an intentional transition to a different area you hadn't seen yet.

3) "Touch everything". Not everything you see is solid.

4) Sometimes secret stuff is "under the sea". The concept is borrowed mainly from SMW2, where some secrets are buried while under the solid tiles. IIRC, Star World 2 in the original SMW is an example of this, to an extent.

You may be able to find speedruns or "Let's Play" vids of the hack... but that's not a sure bet.

i have literally examined every available tile/hole/block/open space/water area in that level.  when i said 6 months, it isn't an exaggeration.

i've looked in lunar magic and can't find anything.

i've played loads of them and have never had a problem like this before.

I'll have to play it first to find out.

I'll tell you this.. some SMW hacks that I know of have some errors of saying they have a secret exit.

If you are able to use Lunar Magic, I suggest you enable the location warp feature (I forget what it's called). Basically, you can see how each level transitions to another. It's very helpful as long as you know what location you are starting at for said map.

problem is, this hack is finished, not a beta,  and you can't advance without finding the secret exit.  i just made a video.  let me show you.

:edit:

here you go:

i can't move on to the next planet unless i find the secret exit.  i can't find anywhere else to search anymore.

All I can say is that you may have missed a couple of pipes. It is also unclear whether the two pipes are linked to the same location... sometimes it's "the same", but it's not always the case.

nah, i tried all the pipes in the level.  i was just showing the level i was stuck on, not everything i've tried.

at the end of the first part(spring) 2 pipes go to 2 places -- 1 summer, 1  a weird mole tile

summer has a p-switch door that leads to the pounding fist(which has a pipe to autumn) and a pipe to autumn

autumn has nothing out of the ordinary

winter is the exit.

ah well, maybe someone will have played through it at some point.  thanks for the ideas.

Is the p-switch used anywhere else? Sometimes they want you to bring it through a pipe or something.

The only things I can think of is that there may be a special transition area in the "sky"... used in some SMW Hacks.

There's also the "hidden pipe" that is normally used in SMW2..

That's about all I can think of... perhaps they may have used the time feature in one of the original SMW levels (it's one of the Choco Isles with the rotating level based on coins picked up and the timer).

that's something i was wondering about.  someone said somewhere else that in super mario infinity and smi2 there are levels where you have to wait until after a certain time to find new things.  i've waited out the clock and gone through the level with the last 70/75 seconds just to see and nothing was different.

eh, i'll figure it out some day.

Bleh, sounds like bad game design to me. Could it also be a problem with new code? What emulator are you playing on? I know every SMW hack I've tried has failed at some point on the actual hardware. If you're using an accurate emulator, something might not be working as intended. It's a long shot, but it's something to consider.

that's not a bad idea.  i've tried snes9x, zsnes, and snesgt.  it seems fine on all of them.  maybe i ought to try bsnes just to see what happens.

it seems like something isn't executing properly somewhere.  after looking more thoroughly with lunar magic, a few pipes indicate they lead to other places than where they take me.  that could be me interpreting the exits wrong, though, i guess.

:edit:

doesn't run under bsnes.  hmmm...

:edit: 2

after i take the pipe in the first area, i come to a place where both pipes there lead to the same place.  according to lm one of those is supposed to lead somewhere else. again, though, i could be reading the data wrong i guess

You need View->Screen Exits enabled in Lunar Magic. It should highlight what area you exit to. Additionally you need Secondary Entrances enabled... this would provide you all known locations of where you are coming into a level from.

view-> screen exits just shows you the width of  each "screen" that mario runs across. i think they're called "pages" in nes hacking. i have secondary level exits enabled.  i think i'm right and there's a problem in the level.  or it's nearly impossible to guess when to use the pipe i was talking about.

it's too bad, because the game is really fun and the graphics are awesome.  he took graphics from lots of mario games, metroid games, megaman, and lots of others.  in fact, a few levels/areas are ripped straight from m2: ros and are pretty neat, black and white and everything.  there's also lots of fusion graphics, including the x parasites as coins.  just very neat graphics and levels. the first game has some neat enemies too, like mechanized mario clones/ flying marios.  they're definitely good games that deserve a chance, but not when parts are frustrating like this.  super mario infinity 1 and 2 are both really good also.
