Baron Dancer Restoration (SNES)
« on: June 28, 2016, 07:52:49 PM »
So, silly question time.

I restored the dummied dancer's dress in Baron in my Playable Golbez Edition hack, but I didn't note how this change was accomplished.

Can anyone refresh me?  I seem to recall it was stupidly obvious... but it's been so long since I touched the game that I don't recall the method.

Thanks, all.

To my understanding (correct me if I'm wrong), the sprite for the dress itself is simply told not to be visible in the US version and all you have to do is turn back on the visibility. Of course the dancer sprite underneath is censored as well.

It might actually be the case that the dress NPC doesn't exist in the US version. The sprite is definitely there, but the NPC might not be assigned to the roster of Baron NPCs. If that's the case then the dance event might still have all the instructions for the dress, but then the dress wouldn't do anything because it's not there.
This is all speculation. I'm reading/writing this from my bed, and my chrome remote desktop app can't seem to connect to my computer at the moment to test the theory. If you get around to it before me, try this: open the game in FF4kster, open the NPC editor, see if there is a dress NPC in Baron. Also, open the baron dancer event in the event editor, see if there are movement instructions for the dress (if there is, in fact, no dress NPC, then the instructions will be for "-Unknown-").

All the movements for the dress are in the scene info in ff4kster.  There is a command to toggle dress sprite visibility, but changing or removing that line doesn't seem to do the trick.

Also, there is an NPC for the dress in the code.

I was thinking that literally all I did before was change one cell in a hex editor, but it's been years, so I could be mis-remembering.

Ah!
The sprite for the Dancer's dress is set as "transparent."
Change the sprite to "dress?"
You'll also want to change the Baron Dancer's sprite (placement 9, not placement 10) to "Dancer in dress," otherwise the dancer who's already not wearing a dress will just magically produce a dress to throw off.

Thank you!  It was in fact as easy as I remembered it.  :)

I now feel super-dense.  I've just been messing with ff4kster for the past few days since my earlier project predated it.  I've been extremely impressed with the program but only just now realized that you can in fact get into that box in the NPC editor where sprite/visible/speech are selected.  I'd initially thought that data was off-limits and was a bit disappointed.

Thanks again for your help with this!!!

Sure, no problem!
FF4kster really did develop into one of the greatest game-specific editors out there. This forum's been pretty quiet since its completion, but I still check in at least once a day, so if you have any more questions about using it feel free to ask.

Thanks!  You were a big help to me last time I was here too and I really appreciate it!

I do have one question, actually.  Is there a reason why the NPCs in the training room aren't listed in FF4kster?  Or are they listed under some heading other than the training room?  Just wondering if this is a known issue.

Regardless, continuing to be amazed by the depth and scope of this program.  I sure wish this had been around last time, it would have saved me many weeks of searching, and trial and error.

There are several maps in FFIV that use an NPC set that has a different ID than that of the map itself. The training room is one of them (all of the chocobo forests are other examples).
Further complicating the matter is that the training room is listed as an "underground" map.
So, looking in FF4kster, Training Room Main Floor has NPC Index 42, and Training Room Upstairs has NPC Index 43. So, scrolling through all the Overworld maps, then passing the World maps... Beginning with "Smithy's House," we count up 42 maps and get to -Glitch World- (#299) and -Glitch World- (#300) that's where you'll find the Training Room NPCs. You can press "/" to view the index numbers, BTW.
Yeah, it's weird, but I think pinkpuff managed it as best as could be done in light of the circumstances.

Awesome!!!  Thank you again.

Trust me, I have only love and respect for PinkPuff after tinkering with this for the last few days.  Truly an amazing accomplishment.

Woah, really!?  So that means the training room npcs "Underground" NPC's then. Thanks for sharing that tidbit!

Yeah, my guess is that they replaced the NPC set of FFIVJ's Developer's room (which is underground) with that of the Training Room. But that's just a guess, I haven't looked into it.

Actually yeah, now that you mention the developer's room, I remember the music hall and other small room were the rooms where they crammed training room's npcs in when I remade them for Rodimus' Namingway Edition.
