I was looking through finalfantasy.wikia.com to see what exactly made FFII SNES and FFIV otherwise so different that FFII would be considered "easier". As far as I can tell the only thing that makes FFII a little bit easier is the open availability of Remedy's and Ethers, when you have the money to splurge on Ethers. None of the enemy stats are changed and I would argue that some of the battle items (curtains, bacchus wine, Spider Silk) actually ends up making things a bit easier.

While in this I saw a version of FFIV that I'd never even heard of before...

"Mobile PhoneEdit
The following is from the mobile phone port of the game, which was only released in Japan so far.

All new character sprites for during and outside of battle, with some taken from Final Fantasy IV: The After Years.

The party-swapping feature from the Advance edition is reinstated, with some rebalancing on the characters.

A whole new "EX Dungeon", which is a heavily redesigned version of the Lunar Ruins and shares the same entrance. The stories for the Lunar Ruins were changed.

The inventory space is now unlimited. The Fat Chocobo is now used for a minigame. If the player finds one of eight Gysahl Greens from around the world, they will receive a reward from the Fat Chocobo in the Chocobo Forest.

Namingway has been replaced by Tradingway, who must be visited in seven different locations. Each time the player meets him, they will get a Colored Card and an item. Collecting them all will award the player with the Unhappy Ear Hood, which refers to Namingway's ears.

Other than the Pink Tail, the player can discover other tails in exchange for items. These include items that were seen in the The After Years, such as the Rapid Ring and Rare Band."

Now this actually sounds like an interesting little update and would have been neat as an add on or DLC or something for the Complete Collection.  What interests me the most is that apparently the Lunar Trials stories were changed. I love FFIV to death and every iteration of its world and characters always fascinates me, so I would love to know more about this version if possible.  I am also curious to know what rebalancing efforts were done for the end game.

If you asked me, most of the Lunar Trials were uninspired.

The only one worth a damn was Kain's due to obvious reasons.

Unfortunately, most of the Advance equipment was pretty much OP.

For the most part, I would agree with you. I thought Edward's was also pretty good. Cecil's was... fun but strange. Rydia's was a neat little throw back, but didn't do much to develop a character or anything, Rosa's was just odd. Yang's was a bit annoying. I thought they did the Twin's Trial pretty well though. Granted because of this the enemies in that particular trial are garbage, Edge's... I will say that Edge's was challenging and felt very unique. Cid's... I don't even recalll... Oh right! Taxi driver, now that one was silly.

I am very curious to know what they did for this Mobile version, if they tuned up the stories or if they somehow made it worse.

Edward's was "Sing and the ghosts of Damcyan's past go away".

Cecil's was "how to be a Paladin", except we skipped the parts that really mattered.

Rydia's was the only cute way to "revive" young Rydia while finding an excuse to kill all the summons you hadn't killed yet (minus, Chocobo).

Rosa's was "the lazy man's version of FF6's banquet" with an invisible timer.

Yang was "master battle grind".

The twins was an OK puzzle.

Edge was "do you know how to find secret passages?"

Cid's was "did you know where those towns are?" and driving the Enterprise with exceptional accuracy (hell yes, it was stupid easy).

Kain's is the only one that is story heavy and it sucks anyway. Probably longer than any of the original game's story sequences, adds nothing to his character you didn't already know, and then throws a boss at you that you'll likely mistime the first time you fight it, requiring you to play through all that text again. :bah:

Well, they did have to find a way to make Kain's Trial terrible.

Inevitably, most/all of the stuff in the GBA port was terrible.

Hi everyone!

I also heard about that elusive mobile version of the game some time ago. The one thing that I found really interesting about it were the new character sprites. I'm too nostalgic to prefer them over the originals, but the palette choices and shading I find excellent!
And they are actually mostly compatible with the original game's engine since the party battle sprites are one of the few 15 color elements in the game...
So I decided to make inserting the ones I had from the official homepage into the game my first game hacking tryout.

Regards!
You've got to be kidding me with that Dynasty Warriors registration question??!!

I like those sprites.  Got any others imported?

If you go to the official homepage of the mobile version (via FFIV Wikipedia entry, links section) you get four "dot images" for every playable character. Those I have inserted with the new palettes. It works pretty well to a certain degree - characters jumping between old and new sprites sometimes has a rather comical effect...
In the meantime I was able to find two or three more "animation phases" through google. The problem at this point is that there is really no information about this port outside Japan and I don't understand a word of Japanese!

Chrome does a pretty good job of translating pages in foreign languages. I found an old ffiv data document once that was in japanese. Chrome translated it at least well enough that I got the gist.

I heard of this version of the game some time ago. More than anything else my interest in it is those kick-ass player sprites.

They even added new sprites? Now that is pretty cool and they don't look half bad compared to what they've been doing nowadays with the IoS versions!

The problem really isn't so much reading Japanese websites, but rather intelligently searching the web in Japenese! (And all you ever get is about the mobile version of "After Years")  :bah:

Looks like they improved the spell effects too. Not bad. Makes me want to try to track down the game and try to rip everything I can.
