I usually choose names within a pool of customized character archetypes. I rarely use any names however I have given poor names to things that can't actually be named. For example in Dynasty Warriors (PS2), there are a few different colored horses.
The black one : Snowball
The red one : Clippityclop
The brown one : Nay-He
The white one : Pony (pwn-y)

In FFT, I renamed Boko to "Chicken", then killed him for his much-stronger-in-every-way offspring who was also then named Chicken.
