I have a feeling we are playing slightly different versions, because Life potions never work in battle for me, and every town's item shop sells only Life potions.  You get a ton of Cure3 potions from treasure chests, if I recall.

Front or back is irrelevant when facing Laser, you're going to take damage in the 800-1300 range.

The trick in the screenshot is that Cecil is taking 1 damage from Golbez's spell.  Virus does around 100, but since Golbez has virtually no HP, he shouldn't be an issue.

The berserk source is the Power staff, which you should find in a chest somewhere.  Sometimes it procs Berserk on hit (I found this out accidentally against Calbrena)

Have you found any claws anywhere for Yang?

As for the big spoiler, just play around with your equipment and check your status screen, and you might find it.  It's definitely not a cheat.

Well I am playing 1.0 impossible and I am playing the US american rom version. I haven't found anywhere that sells Cure 3 potions yet that I remember. I do not have a single cure 3 potion in my entire inventory.  And how did you beat Valvalis without using any life potions? Are you sure you're talking about the same game?

I did figure out a great way to beat the dolls today. What you do is put Cecil and Kain  in the back of your party, so that the dolls cannort do much damage to him at all....and then the other party members also survive, because Cecil protects/shields them. So I was able to almost sweep the dolls, but Calbrena appeared with just 1 doll left, so I had to beat her, but she was really easy with Cecil in the back. She could no longer kill him in one hit.

So, I made it to Golbez, this time with full HP. and I still couldn't manage to beat him. He casts too many spells, much too quickly for me to really get any attacks in. Most of the spells kills each party member in 1 hit. And he attacks twice per round, so I don't see how he's really possible to beat. I don't know how much HP he has, but I was only able to get less than 500 from him. He's very tough. I hate the slowness of going through the dolls each time, as that battle is now a joke, so I just made a save state right before Golbez (although I never cheat and save during the middle of the battles...I just dont have the patieice to deal the dolls 10x in a row. I would of when I was younger. lol) Anyways I cant seem to beat Golbez. The fire spell takes a lot of HP from me, and I even have the fire armor, so I am not sure why you would only take 1 hp?

Again it sounds as if you are speaking of a different game...because FF2 doesnt really give you much choice with weapons and armor...and most of them do not have any special effect. I just have the basics....fire arrows, ice arrows, life staff for rosa, Legend and Fire Swords for Cecil, Poison and Charm claws for Yang, etc

About the claws....Yes I have found the Thunder Claw, the Charm Claw and the Poison Claws for yang.

By the way, in the text document that came with the patch, it said the ONLY changes to the game was that you receive 0 exp from all monsters, including bosses.
I am playing ver 1.0

So, I am guessing you have something diffeent, if things are altered from the normal game, like cure 3 potions being sold in all shops, or not being able to use life potions in battle, etc. In FF2 you can use life potions in battle, so nothing should be changed from the normal game other than the 0 experience, if you are playing the same thing I am. I dont know if JCE3000GT made 2 versions of the 1.0?? Can you clear this up for us?

Thanks

The treasure chests are absolutely changed in mine.

The easiest check right now would be to see which is better, Legend sword or Fire.  Legend sword is considerably stronger in my version.

There should be a v1.0 and another version number (3.0b?).  1.0 should only have 0 exp as a change, while the other has tweaks all over the place.

V1.0 readme:
Quote
            FF2us Impossible V1.0 FINAL

This patch was created by JCE3000GT on 5/01/2001.

You need this ROM *with* a header Final Fantasy II (U) (V1.0) [!].  This may or may not work with other versions of FF2us or FF4 and I haven't tested it.

NOTE: If you find any bugs or whatnot please drop me a line.

NOTE 2: This version has only one change, all monsters give ZERO EXP.  Nothing else has been altered.

V3.0b readme:
Quote
            FF2us Impossible V3.0 BETA

This patch was created by JCE3000GT on 6/3/2007.

You need this ROM with a header Final Fantasy II (U) (V1.0) [!].  This may or may not work with other versions of FF2us or FF4 and I haven't tested it.

NOTE: This is the 3rd version of my FF2us Impossible hack, this time there should be very little if any bugs.  Please provide a detailed report at varying locations in the game.

UPDATE: What's changed is the following...

1) Every non-boss monster gives the same EXP and GP--minus the final dungeon.
2) Boss monsters give SOME EXP and GP...not much.
3) Monsters who are summoned by other monsters give ZERO GP and EXP to prevent exploits.
4) All weapons are bought for the same price--50GP to prevent users from being tempted to use the duplication glitch to gain money.
5) Armor on the other hand is not as cheap.
6) There is some new content, which will be in my up coming FF2us Insane hack.
7) All bugs should be eliminated--but as always if you find any please report them to me.

Uh... anything in between?  My version doesn't sound like either of those.  My ROM does say v1.0.

Features:
No XP/GP from anything
Most treasure chests changed
All shops only sell Life potions
Life potions do not work in battle; everything else does
Some spell costs changed (Chocobo, Hold and Scan changed to 77, View to 10)

LOL at least we got this cleared up. I am playing the patch with no changes. The legend sword is weaker than the fire sword, I already tested that.

Also I decided to check a FAQ for Golbex HP...and it said he had like 22,000 but you only have to hit him with one summon and he will die. They recommend the Titan summon which I dont believe I have. I have just chocobo and I hit him with it and he did not die. Either way I guess his HP is fairly low? This would be the only way to beat him, if it is infact EXTREMELY low, which I guess it is.

So, all in all this is a great idea for a hack, if this ends up being possible to beat. I mean what if Golbez actually had a lot of HP like he should? Then he would be unbeatable at this level.

JCE3000GT- When you created this hack, were you aware that it would likely be possible, due to all these flaws in the game (Well I call them flaws...but what I mean is that the normal game is way too easy)

PS- Are the sliver apples only available in FF IV? I dont see anything that says they exisrt in FF2.

Golbez has closer to 2800 HP in this fight.

Silver Apples are not available in US FFIV.

That's for you to find out.     Seriously I figured it would be possible (V3.0) but extremely difficult (V1.0).  Who knows..?

If Golbez has that much HP, then he's absoutlely impossible with the version I am playing. I cannot even get 1,000 hp off of him, and this is with fighting with all my skill.  He attacks twice per round, so no matter how often you use life, cure 2, etc, you will still due before you can get enough attacks in. He kills most members in the party in 1 hit, besides Cecil who can usually take 3 spells before he dies.

So, you should rename the 1.0 patch to FF2 HACK GOLBEZ DARK ENDING (just since he's unbeatable and the game ends there!)

I realized the problem with beating the dolls with Cecil in the back of the party, makes Golbez harder (as you need him in the front when facing Golbez to stand a chance, since all he does is cast spells....I had a theory that if you just waited it out and cured long enough he would run out of MP and then he would be possible. I wasnt able to get him to run out....but this might be the only way to beat him) so I will try again with Cecil in the front(and I'll attempt to get Golbez to run out of MP again)....problem is I was doing greart against the dolls with Cecil out front, and then Calbrenna Turned BACK into the dolls after I saw a message that said "hp ran out" and it was just an infinte battle from there, so I gave up.

This was kinda cool...but I am sure it's not possible. I guess 3.0 would be, but I wanted to playt he hardest version you had. I think if you ever tweak it to make it possible (but just barely) it would be great. If not, then it's still cool for the idea I had to keep it like this.

lol

Bottom line is (incase my post made no sense) Golbez is unbeatable unless you can get him to run out of MP, because all you can do is heal every turn and he STILL ends up killing you. This leaves absoutely NO time or chance to get many attacks in. I'd say he's still possible, but when I say that, I mean a 1 out of million chance....so nobody will ever beat him the way it is now, uneless he is able to run out of MP before he kills me.

There are a few ways of approaching Golbez in a low-level type game. Exposing his elemental weaknesses of Fire (common, especially if you have the Fire Sword, that you should have picked up @ the Tower of Zot) or Holy (you will have the Legend Sword accessible anyways, but it wouldn't be as strong).

Monsters in FF2 (or any of the FF4 ports, probably excludes FF4DS, but I wouldn't know) don't consume ANY MP for ANY spell they cast. Even the lowly Imp/Goblin could be told to cast Meteor and succeed regardless of its current MP (in their case, 0MP normally speaking).

Improving your chances of killing Golbez is if you obtain any Berserking items... and/or using the strongest possible equipment set to boost strength... which means using the Headband, Karate/Kenpogi Robe, and Strength Ring/Power Wrist or Zeus Gloves (though that's a rare drop with the Ogres).

Thanks for all the info...the problem with me is that i am trapped underground so i dont have access to most of the good equipment you mentioned.

I do have the Fire Sword, but it only deals between 100-400(if you're lucky) damage (sometimes even misses So, he is virtually impossible. I might take 1,000 tries to get lucky enough to beat him. He connects with all of his spells, and he's brtual. lol

Maybe I should make a "Yes No" option before the boss battles for those who want to skip them.
