I love the Zot treasure chests look:

Bugs...

I'm sure that meant the monsters will eat your babies if you don't take this:

Ok, so I can reach here... but..:

I get transported and become stuck here:

Also, if the spell has a space in it.. the data is not displayed after the space. For example, you can see this when Palom learns the level 2 elemental spells. I think JCE made a reference to how this bug occurs in some old post.

$FF functions as a string terminator whenever loading fixed-length text. The fix is simple, just add a new blank character to use as a space in those names.

I'm slightly disappointed that you can't buy Charm (and to a lesser extent, Samurai/Yoichi's Arrows) in the hack.

The biggest plus is selling the Glass Helmet.. making Edge take far less damage in the Giant.

Well...as for the bugs above...

Yes...I liked the way those treasure chests turned out too...except that was a compromise. I was trying to change them back to the way they looked in Final Fantasy IV normal...but it didn't work...I can't remember why not...so I did that.

Not sure what's going on with that item drop...could be collateral to using Yousei's editor...?

The trail near Troia castle was just superficial to the dopey tower of zot wannabe I put there...LOL I was really just playing around with the map editor.
The general consensus in other FF4 circles, including the Japanese, is that Zot is a high-flying floating fortress left by the Lunarians at some point in the past (the idea I've heard is that it was supposed to have been an observation platform used/built by KluYa or FusuYa to keep tabs on events on the Blue Planet).

I think the Charm Arrows will probably be sold somewhere in future hacks. I read your post about tweaking the arrows and bows, and those are great suggestions I will probably use some of that.

Samurai/Yoichi Arrows should be normally sold by Kokkol along with the Shuriken and Ninja Stars/Fuma Shuriken after you have him forge Excalibur.

Beats me, but the message is borked. The game tells you that you have to take the item, and that's the message that comes up...

Someone needs to master Mode 7 and make that dream happen.. someday.

Well, my ideas probably break some balance somehow (I don't know what exactly, but it would break some of the early game monsters to an extent...), but the basis is to restruct the damn weapon to be useful and to keep all arrows relatively useful when you obtain them and keep them that way throughout the game. It's sad that the Lit arrows have almost no impact when you are in the Giant (like, Rosa does approximately 1000-1500 points of damage, and that's unacceptable IMO).

IIRC, you replaced the arrows with whatever you renamed as the Ninja Sword. Not worth buying at all...

I finished this hack... too bad not much of significance was changed overall.

The graphics do look occasionally strange in battle, which is the only common bug.

Yup...I figured that would be your ultimate impression.

As I said, it was more a learning experience on my part, than a real well thought out hack of any consequence.

Especially since there appear to be all kinds of ugly bugs in it.

Oh well...it's already been thrown under the bus, but I may revisit the concept of using the Golbez sprite in the future.

Hmm.. looking at your treasure document.. it would be nice to iron some of the details.

The 3 veggie items belong to the Black Chocobo Forest. The coords confuse me, but I'm pretty sure that's what they are attributing to.

The X-Potion, I've never seen in Baron Castle.. so if you were to isolate a location or something, I could take a look.

The Sleep Blade (Slumber Sword) is in a treasure chest with a formation of a Steel Golem and 4 Skulls (that's not even a regular monster formation though..)

Chocobo Villages - There's one for each village.. I couldn't tell you which is which, but there are 5 known locations:
Southwest of Baron (the forest patch is kinda by itself)
Northeast of Fabul (forest patch is surrounded by mountains)
West of Kaipo (forest patch is inaccessible normally unless you have an airship... probably was meant to be connected by the shallows)
South of Mt. Ordeals (forest patch is distinctly by itself surrounded by the forest)
South of Toroia (forest patch is by itself across the bridge.. it helps to use a Chocobo to find its location because the Chocobo is not allowed to enter Towns and Chocobo Forests)

Tower of Babil-Underground.. no idea where you could find those items (location would have to be more clear...)

Blizzard Spear chest has Alert that summons the weakest of all the Golems (weak vs Ice and is a Giant) - nonstandard formation
IceBrand chest has Alert that summons a Chimera - nonstandard formation
Ice Armor chest has Alert that summons a Flamedog (I think)
Ice Shield chest has Alert that summons a Naga (well, it's that or swap with whatever I said for the Ice Armor chest)

MageMasher chest has Toadlady + 6 TinyToad formation
Fullmoon chest has 4 Marlboros - nonstandard formation
Avenger chest has 2 Marlboro + 2 Darktree
Medusa Arrows chest has 2 Undergrounders or whatever they are called (the snake-like monsters that cast Quake when alone)

Golden Apple chest in Lunar Path - 2 Eurkayote and 2 Prokayote - nonstandard formation

Dark Gear chest - 2 Red Giants
Dragon Shield+Fuma Shuriken are not monster chests
Stardust Rod chest - Behemoth
Crystal Helmet - 1 Warlock + 1 Dragon Fossil formation - nonstandard formation
Other Crystal equipment chests:
2 Blue Dragon
1 Blue Dragon + 1 Red Dragon - nonstandard formation
2 Red Dragon
I forget which chest is which monster, they should be linked somehow in the code.

The list is missing the Life Staff, which has a monster formation of 2 Warlocks + 2 Karys (nonstandard formation).

Protect Ring monster chest contains Behemoth.
Minerva Robe monster chest contains Warlock + 3 Karys (nonstandard formation).

That's about it as far as I can tell.

The monsters in chests are part of monster formation list, in a different section separated from every standard monster formation you see.

Awesome, thanks for the enemy formations for the chests. I just hadn't taken the time to go through the game and write them all down. When I update that workbook I'll add your data.

Basically the data comes from me finding a correlation between the groupings of the items in the ROM and the various FF4 strategy guides I have. (FF4 is much easier confirm that way since the dungeon item lists are more unique than in FFII where there are mostly Heals or Money replacing the dummied items).

The mystery X-Potion in Baron I *think* is just in a pot in the east tower that you can't get to...like they screwed up the coordinates or forgot to create a hidden walk-thru wall or something. East tower is the "off limits" one and that treasure entry appears between the 2nd and 3rd floors, IIRC the second floor has a bunch of pots, many of them are inaccessible.

I have no idea where the mystery treasure in the Bab-il underground data is. I've never found poison arrows in the tower...and potions are just about everywhere in any dungeon. The only thing I had an idea for trying to find those was to put really rare items in them...or specific amounts of Gil so when I play through if I find them I'll know exactly where.
