FF6 question.
« on: March 30, 2008, 02:58:55 AM »
I'm finally going to beat this SOB.

So, my question is this: Which GameFAQs walkthrough should I use? A lot of them are quite old, though in many cases that means nothing(Kao Megura's FF7 walkthrough, anyone?).

I'm very biased to the Mynock's guide since that was the most thorough and comprehensive at the time. Some of the info is a bit dated (primarily the rumor section).

Are you going to use a patched versions (evasion bug fix, ect.) or a clean one with all the bugs?
A few basic tips;
In most cases, anyone who can do damage with anything other than fight is usually better than fight. Pummel, Dispatch, and Drill will probably help you walk though most random encounters without much difficulty in the first half of the game.

I don't really read walk thoughts, but the hardest parts will be being prepared to boss battles. I used to find Ultros the first real challenge of the game because Banon dying is an automatic death scene.

I usually put everyone in the backrow for the defense (and seeing as I rarely use fight anyway, that's the only thing I noticed get weakened and emphasizes the 'damage without fight = better than fight' (though, there are exceptions)

I think I read this once, and it seems mostly true though out the game in terms of weaknesses for your enemies;
Most humans weak vs poison, bugs/plants weak vs fire, air and mechanical weak vs bolt, reptiles (and the rare dragon) weak vs ice.

Edgar's Noiseblaster gives the entire (susceptible) group of enemies muddle which indirectly protects your party.

Knowing where all the treasures are will help out. If your looking to just beat the game, the easiest way to give yourself an advantage is to set the game settings to "wait" so it pauses the battle gauges while you pick something and battle speed to the slowest (I feel this only effects the monsters speed, not your own characters).

If you have any questions about FF6, I can probably give you a tip on what to do without suggesting something cheap. (like "just use vanish/doom, huh huh")
I usually try to beat enemies legit without using any 'tricks'. :laugh:

I know most of the layouts and whatnot and a lot of the tricks, and I'm using the original version with no patches.

I'm asking because the last time my knowledge of the game was current was in 2002. >.< I know new tricks have been discovered(Wind god), and different strategies have been discovered that are a lot better.

Djibriel's is the best, and covers nearly everything imaginable  (though he doesn't bother with appendices like Monster or Item lists, as those are already covered by Master ZED's Monster Statistics Guide [use the newest one at http://masterzed.cavesofnarshe.com] and Atom Edge's Item Guide).  It is very, very thorough, which may be a put-off for some.  If it bothers you, go with Atom Edge's walkthrough or Mynock's.  If you do opt for Mynock's, try to read it somewhere else, as GameFAQs butchered it to make it conform to their 80 characters-per-line standard -- but still make sure you're using the latest version 2.01.  Anyway, definitely consult Djibriel's first, as it's great.

Thanks, everyone. After going over the FAQs, I determined Djibiel's is the best for me.

The best possible strategy would be using that FF3usME editor and just see what the exact stats, weaknesses and skills each monster will use. - lol
