Title: Dummied Customizer Options?
Post by: Bahamut ZERO on November 09, 2015, 03:32:08 PM
I was playing around with the J2e translation the other night, and was surprised to find that there were a plethora of options not available in the US version, such as:

Remember Cursor position (Why, Square? Why!?)
Custom button mapping (you can, say, map Start to open straight to the item menu, etc)
something else (can't remember what, as the above two are the most notable of what I saw at the time)

What are the chances of these extra Customizer options still existing somewhere in the US rom? I'm quite interested in restoring the "remember cursor position" option if at all possible, as it's one of my preferred options in the newer entries of the series.

:offtopic:

Also,  are there any documents on hacking the Customizer menu?  While I currently lack the skills to do a whole lot with such information, I'm very curious on how it works so I could play around with things like trying to merge the battle/message speed option into one, or trying to make a music player  like one found in the early Sonic the Hedgehogs/Street Fighter 2 (which just shows the hex value of the song pointers, playing a track when you hit confirm.)

I'm pretty sure those were mods, not original version restorations.
Cursor memory would be a fine addition to User Options if I ever decided to open that back up, though...

Oh no, they're original version options. Lenophis (I believe) created an FFIV EasyType English mod by dumping pretty much everything into the English version except for scripts. When he did that the original options were also restored. It is my belief that the large chunk of space in Bank 01 mostly refers to the missing options.

Hmm... Then are we sure they aren't just dummied out like active/wait?
I mean, I would assume most if the assembly for cursor memory would be in the 02 or 03 block, since that's where pretty much all of battle takes place...

It was me, and yeah, you can copy the entire 01 bank from any Japanese version into the English versions and still have a fully functional menu. At the time I figured it'd be easier to go that route than adding any missing code, but I can't say for certain that the original code for those menus isn't still there. The text certainly isn't there anymore, but that's easy enough to add.

Wait - are we talking about 01 bank in ROM, or LoROM?

LoROM IIRC

It would be cool if they could be restored. The menus would have to be rewritten as well which shouldn't be too much but some of the features are interesting to say the least.
