Lesser Known Weapon Magic Info...
« on: March 03, 2008, 02:53:55 AM »
Just for the sake of keeping it interesting, here's some neat info that some of you may not really know.

Rod - casts some sort of magic that always hits the enemy - Spell Base Power = 28, Spell Multiplier = 1, this is better than a Bow+Arrow combo
Staff - heals like the Antidote item, which is totally useless, even when Tellah starts with it
Silver/Mythril Staff - works like the Unicorn Horn item, heals Sleep, Paralyze, Charm, and Berserk, which is relatively useless
Lunar Staff - casts Dispel (spell not available in FF2US), another useless spell
Murasame - casts Protect successfully (spell not available in FF2US)
Masamune  - casts Haste/Fast
Dancing Knife - think Rod, but replace the fists the Rod uses with knives, best item to make Rydia a decent attacker for a while,
it is not a Whip replacement though - Spell Power = 40, Spell Multiplier = 8
Poison Axe - casts Venom... WHY??????
Earth Hammer - casts Quake, rids of those slimes/pudding/flan in the Tower of Zot easily
Elven Bow - casts Shell successfully (spell not available in FF2US)

I always nicknamed this attack "Throw Stone" because it looks like she's chucking a rock at the enemy.

Well, it is a palette swap of the fists animation.. but treated as if you could throw it like Shurikens.

I read somewhere it was called "Runeshot" . . . I don't know where they got this info, or if they just made it up.

It could be an internal name for FF4A, but that remains to be seen...

The real name for it is Magic Arrow. I have no idea where RuneShot came from, probably one of the earlier FF4 translations.

I might as well list the others:

Staff: Poisona
Mythril Staff: Basuna
Dancing Dagger: Dancing Dagger (heh)

Where did you get the "real" names?

Anyway, whatever it is she's definitely throwing something. Just look at her arm:

The reason I always thought "stone" was that she's throwing something small and grey which has a punch-style animation when it hits, which is definitely the animation I would choose if I were going to put a "throw stone" technique into the game.

That sprite for Rydia is actually her left-hand attack sprite, so you'd see the same sprite if she was left-handed. She's not actually throwing anything (since it's a rod, it seems more like she would be shooting something from it). All the characters have a left-hand attack and a right-hand attack (apparently they're all a little bit ambidextrous ). I wondered why, since most of them are right-handed, until I saw this pic and realized that they may have other uses. I wonder when else the opposite handed sprite is used (bows and arrows for one, but I thought that was the only time).

How do you know she's not throwing anything? It certainly looks that way to me. Although I admit shooting something out of the rod would make more sense from a practical perspective. But if that were the case wouldn't the rod appear in her hand as part of the animation?

In any case, I've always found it very useful as an alternative to attacking when Rydia's out of MP at low levels.

From the name of the spells those weapons cast.

The Blizzard Spear is a Tofu (FF2US name) killer. Too bad targeting was nerfed in FF4A.

So you got the names of the spells from the names of the spells. Very nice.

As is clear from the screenshot, the only name that appears when you use the ability is "Rod" and I don't see a spell named "Magic Arrow" appearing anywhere else in the game... so what makes you think it's called "Magic Arrow" or anything else besides "Rod"?

It is internal to the spell list. Note that some "spell names" are hidden to the world due to script, such as Scamaglione's Slow attack in response to a fire elemental spell in FF4. Item usage uses the name of the item... overriding whatever spell name it is using in reality.

Gotcha. So by diving into the rom and following the pointers from the items' "casts spell" fields you can discover the names of these otherwise hidden spells.

I still like "Throw Stone" better though, even if it's not the official name.

In Final Fantasy IV DS the effect of using the Rod as an item in battle is that gray coloured arrows rain down from above on the enemy. Proving conclusively that the attack is "Magic Arrow".

"But I want to cast Magic Missile!"
