Hooray failing hardware!
« on: June 11, 2008, 04:18:14 PM »

Over the past couple of years, various pieces of hardware for my PC are slowly dying. The list as it is currently:

One stick of 64 megs SDRAM. It currently only has 32 megs.
Top right corner of monitor has dying pixels, and it is getting progressively worse. It's like images are being burned to it, but leaving the monitor off as much as possible seems to help...somewhat.
Onboard modem - initially broken when I got this machine 4 years ago. What's worse is that it's soldered and blocking a PCI slot.
One PCI slot is shot, and doesn't work with anything.
Unknkown if the AGP slot works or not.
Onboard sound does not work. I tried for two hours to get Windows to find it, and it wasn't able to.
Sound card (takes up PCI slot) has a failing port, as the connector for the speakers is failing. I usually have to twist the connector to get it to sound right. Initially I thought it was the Y-splitter I was using, but plugging the speakers in directly does the same thing as the Y-splitter.

Wow, bigger list than I thought. The IDE controllers, the processor, the other two sticks of ram, the video card, and the power supply all work fine. Who else has dying hardware?

Let's see.. I have a 14" Packard Bell monitor from the original computer that was bought 10+ years ago... which makes me want to go blind due to low res and flickering.

Then there's the Celeron I use to connect online (network is being routered through ICS and a switch).

There's also the P4 (the earliest versions) I have yet to put to use.

If I can only find the bag o' RAM with the cache stick (128k worth IIRC)...

Regarding your onboard sound, have you checked to see if that's trigged by jumpers? Usually older comps have more jumper use than BIOS options.

I know you're probably in a worse financial situation than me but I'd seriously consider just saving up and buying a new computer.

No, it's a yellow block over the three ports. I don't see any jumpers near it.

That's pretty much what I have to do.

One that's about 10 years old now. This machine is pretty much maxed out with the hardware I can possibly get, except for the processor.

I'm asking so I can see if there are jumpers for the audio (which is highly likely).

I've got an ancient 486 with Windows 3.1 that still works, except for the CD-ROM drive which is dead.
I've been thinking about replacing it, I've got parts. But I can't for the love of God figure out how to open the thing up! It's like it was never meant to be opened, except maybe with a hacksaw.

Ha, that reminds me of my parents' old computer. You had to remove the screws from the back of the case, split the case in half, remove the back half, undo four clips in the front half and pull it up and off without yanking the CD drive out along with it...only the find a second, easy-open hinged case underneath. Who the hell designs these things?

They are designed for OEMs to force you to pay them to fix this crap. They really don't want you to succeed there.

Well, so much for listening to music. The connector to the sound card just died. Can't get any kind of signal now.

What motherboard do you have?
According to CPU-z:

Manufacturer: PCCHIPS
Model: K7ASA, V10

I'm asking so I can see if there are jumpers for the audio (which is highly likely).
I saw no jumpers near the sound, but there are jumpers at the bottom of the board.

Per the manual:
JP703: Enable/disable onboard audio

Use this 3-pin jumper to enable or disable the onboard audio.
Disable onboard audio/modem - Short pins 1-2

amen!  but what irks me more than Adobe PDF is the proliferation of Adobe Flash.
