Replacement Font Recommendations
« on: May 16, 2008, 06:28:53 PM »
I never really considered replacing the font in FF4 for my hack, but recently staring at the text so much is making me want to change it. Does anyone have any favorite SNES fonts or other font recommendations?

It beats me, I could care less to be honest. It probably shouldn't be a VWF though, unless you have bigger ideas with this.

A variable-width, or proportional, font is beyond what I want to do. Just a simple replacement if I find one I like.

You said FF4, is this for J2e's translation? I don't really have any large font replacements except for a not-very-good-looking conversion of the FF Advance dialogue font, but I've got loads of 8x8's I can upload for you if you want to take a look at them, just got to get them off the old computer.

Sorry, I meant FF2us. I'd love to take a look at your 8x8 letter fonts if you have them readily available.

I know I have more than these around here somewhere, just can't find them. Anyway, 8x8 and fonts 1-3 are from archives I found on ZD, there's some pretty good stuff in them. Pandora 1-8 are the eight fonts we're currently using with PB's font swapper (Might be some WIP custom icons in them too, feel free to use any of the icons), and Easy Type is the font from my FF4 Easy Type translation.

I have done font tilesets for FF4 that resemble the fonts S-E is using in it's GBA FF remakes.  I've got the standard 8x8 set (that would work in FF-II) and I also figured out a version of it for the 8x12 font in the J2e patch. It's a little fancy though...if that works for you...  Sometimes I actually prefer the san-serif font used in FF-II...

Anyway, I could supply bitmaps of the mods from TileLayerPro if you like...or I may just do it anyway and provide links sometime tomorrow...as long as I remember to do it.

Nothing wrong with that, it's the nicest "simple" font ever made, only font I used in my hacks for years.

I went through all of the fonts Dragonsbrethren gave me, and settled on one from the Pandora set. After I inserted it, I noticed it looked uncannily similar to the font already present in FF2/4. I checked it and it turns out it's just the same font with shadowing.   It looked best to me, and I still think it looks better than the original, so I'm sticking with it. I'd like to take a look at yours too, Paladin, if you'll post it.

Here's a preview of the font block, ugly default TLP colors...I couldn't find a decent palette file...

Here are screenshots of the font running:

http://www.finalfantasyiv.net/host-files/font-example-02.gif

Here's the (untouched) bitmap as dumped out of TLP, should be able to import it into a J2e patched rom, or edit to dump into FF-II:

I'm sure other people have done the "Square-Enix Fantasy Advance" font already. However the bitch with using it in the J2e patch using their 12x8 font hack is converting the optimizations they did for the "Times New Roman" style serif font they chose and get it to resemble this font. It's not a 1:1 copy but it looks O.K.

I can live with FF-II's san-serif font, as I said. However I really don't care for the default J2e font, so I typically use this gfx hack.

Did you hack the DTE table or force that font into theirs? It's much easier when you hack the table, I got every letter to fit except for the ones that were too wide. Switched my hack over to FF2us 1.1 so I have no plans to actually use that font anymore though.

Also, shadowing a font with gray like that causes it to bleed together on an actual TV, your letters will probably look a little distorted (I actually had a hard time playing RPGe's FF5 translation on my SNES for this reason, and had to hack the font to remove the shadow). It probably won't be so bad with that font, but when you've got bold letters with shadow that fills pretty much all of the space between them, it all just bleeds into a barely-readable blob.

Edit: Damn you dyslexia!

And since I'm editing this, I forgot to mention that your hack looks great so far.

Nah...I'm not that cool...lol.  I just forced it in using J2e's DTE...you know if you don't have a hammer use a rock (instead of walking back to the house to get one). However modding the DTE sounds like the right way to do it, meaning I should probably go learn how to do it right.

Also, shadowing a font with gray like that causes it to bleed together on an actual TV, your letters will probably look a little distorted (I actually had a hard time playing RPGe's FF5 translation on my SNES for this reason, and had to hack the font to remove the shadow). You're absolutely right. I have no trouble playing this on a computer screen, using the latest ZSNES version with the ultra high quality filter they have now. However when I ran it through my media PC hooked to a 27" TV it was difficult to read at best. This is why in the FF-II hack I'm working on I'm leaving the font un-shadowed and sans-serif.

And since I'm editing this, I forgot to mention that your hack looks great so far.

I appreciate the kind words. However I must admit I haven't been working on my hacks for a while. Although the hack used for that that shot does have some GFX mods and I renamed all the items (and re-wrote the "tool-tip" descriptions)...I'm far from done. I'm still digesting a lot of Deathlike's weapon and equipment modification threads as well as having been inspired by FF-XII's equipment paradigm... So many ideas and planning that I haven't looked at the code for a while...

Don't be too impressed by the last screenshot. Neither Golbez nor Anna are going to be truly playable...that's just a hacked save. However the Cecil and Rosa gfx mods  are going to be included in my future hacks.
