thoughts on the election? local elections?
« on: November 05, 2008, 03:14:48 AM »
:edit:
please answer why you voted for your candidate, as well.

i'd really like for this not to turn into an argument the way so many political threads do. all this is for is a little conversation on the national/local elections from tonight.

anyway, i was pretty happy to see obama win.  after watching all the debates and reading about both politicans' views, i really think he can make some real change in the us.  he seems like the kind of guy who's willing to stand up to people and not take any shit, and be a very strong leader.  for him to come out of nowhere after his keynote at the 2004 dnc and work his way up so quickly is pretty amazing, especially (and i hate to take it here) due to his race.  he seems to have an incredible, inspiring vision for what america can be, and i'm very excited to see where he takes us.  like he said in rolling stone, it's gonna take some work on our part to dig ourselves out of the mess this country's in, and it may require some unpopular decisions, but i really think he has what it takes to lead us in the right direction.

outside of that, our standing definitely went up in the eyes of the rest of the world tonight.  really, stop and think about it, if someone said to you a year or 2 ago that the next president would be black, how seriously would you take them?  there's a lot of racism and negativity in this country(not that not believing the next president would be black is racist. it's obviously not.), and the fact that so many different people came together and picked someone very different and said, "we want to change. we want to go in a new direction. we want someone who will work for us, we believe in this man, and we're not afraid to work to get there," is such a huge statement to the rest of the world about our commitment. it's not just about picking someone new, though. that happens every 4/8 years.  it's about all the hard work it took to get to tonight.  all of the grassroots campaigning, the phone calls, the time spent going door to door, the sheer volume of people that found a politician that they could really believe in and support all the way to the white house.  it's amazing the unity that obama has brought about already amongst his supporters in the short time he's been on the national political scene. i hate bringing up race again, but between his race, his message, and all of the support he got from volunteers, amongst other things, so many new voters were energized to vote that it was incredible.

and, really, it's not that just the democrats were able to bring out the voters, because there was a huge turnout of republican voters, as well. this election was very energizing on both sides.  everywhere you went, people were talking about it. i've never seen people so energized (and polarized!) about an election before.  this wasn't like many other elections, in that EVERYONE had a candidate and most everyone was willing to talk about it. in fact, i was getting my license renewed at the end of september, and i couldn't believe how many people in line at the dmv were talking politics. everywhere i went, i'd find people discussing the election.  it was a rare thing, especially in the last month or 2, to hear someone say, "eh, i don't really care who wins. not much is gonna change."  this election had/has massive ramifications, and it's really an amazing statement to eachother and to the rest of the world for so many people to get out and vote and show that we do care, we are committed,  and that we won't just accept 4 more years of being walked all over and manipulated, and being told how things are going to be.

anyway, it's 4am. i'm going to bed.  anyone do any work on either of the campaigns? i donated a bit to obama and made some calls to a couple swing states, as well as giving out some fliers a couple times.

disclaimer:
if something i said seems really screwed up in terms of logic or grammar or something else, i was writing and rewriting this as i went, so some things may not logically go in order, as i would forget what i was writing sometimes when i went to go back and fix/reword something else.

i haven't read that. can i get a link? cause it sounds like, although it's legal to have, it's still illegal to buy from someone, so that doesn't help.

think, like, with roms: they're legal to have if you rip them yourself, right?(hmm... right? you're entitled to a backup of games you own.) BUT, if you try to dump it from your cartridge, you're breaking the law.

i'm not mistaken, am i? anyone? i read through nintendo's website, but as far as they're concerned even emulators are illegal. as much as i'm a fanboy of nintendo, their policy was kinda disturbing to read.

emulators are illegal now?

It's very simple why Obama won..

1) Many people hate W.

2) Obama's black. I'm not saying that it's a good or bad thing, but it's a crucial factor.. that would encourage the young (and not quite wise enough yet) to vote.

3) Financial crisis...

It was expected, and hopefully he doesn't make any huge mistakes.

It's legal in very small quantities.. I've heard it was enacted in other states... and I'm disappointed in the vote personally, but it's not that significant.

The irony is that they use emulation for the Virtual Console games, so it's simple to term it "hypocritical" at best.

i take it that the "not quite wise enough" comment implies you weren't rooting for obama? or am i reading too far into it?

and, while i do agree with you about race being a factor, i honestly don't think it was one of the major influences. i think what really encouraged them to vote was all the volunteers going door to door and making phone calls to swing states.  i know that they were calling people yesterday to make sure they voted. some people got called a few times, at least. they pushed HARD yesterday between nationwide text messages, e-mails, calls, etc. and, of course, over the last few months all the campaign work done over those same 3-4 mediums that younger people use constantly to get the message out and to register new voters. they did a great job of "psyching" people up to vote and for this election to happen.

i do, however, agree with you complete on george bush. msnbc was kind of skirting around it last night, no one would come out and say that mccain's biggest problem in the race this year was bush. and it really was. if bush hadn't fucked things so badly, i really think that things would've been a lot closer last night.

and last, when i called it kinda disturbing, nintendo's own use of emulators is exactly what i was talking about. not just on the vc, but on the zelda disc with oot's master quest and the first couple zelda games, as well as other times. i used to LOVE nintendo, but i'm really starting to think otherwise as of late.

I was rooting for Obama, but not by much. If W didn't suck so much, I probably would have rooted for McCain. Fairly or unfairly, W is the prime reason why I rooted for Obama. I think McCain's more qualified, but ultimately I didn't like either choice to be honest. For me, it's the choice between voting for a Republican even though W fucked up, or voting for a Democrat because W fucked up. That's not a decision I like to make.

You should really ask who voted for Obama. I'm sure you will find a handful of people that will say "it's because I want to elect a black president"... which isn't quite the best reason to vote for a candidate. It would have been like voting for Hilary if she was on the ballot "just because I want to elect a female president". I'd like to think there's more to voting a candidate than their race or gender or whatever. They should be qualified. I didn't really think he was the best candidate for the Democrats.. I would've preferred to vote Hilary (mostly because of Bill, because he did have some credibility that can translate somewhat). Obama is truly anyone's guess.

you know, i read an interesting article on... msnbc i think a week ago about whether or not people who know nothing about the candidates/process/us history ought to be allowed to vote. i'm pretty sure msnbc said no.  it really was pretty sad the things the (roughly) 18-22 year olds didn't know.

poll coming soon..

Voted for Obama, myself.

Now, I didn't fully support either candidate, for various reasons. I was originally planning not to vote at all, out of disgust. But, I really didn't want McCain to win.  My SO said "Think of it this way. A vote for Obama essentially cancels a vote for McCain. You'd be keeping McCain out of office." Thus, I voted for Obama.

As far as local stuff goes, there were two state proposals. Proposal One was about medical marijuana, and I voted for it. People who have Cancer and whatnot deserve drugs. >.>

Proposal Two was about using embryos that were typically discarded from abortions for stem cell research. Voted for that too. I'm all for abortion, and if they're going to waste anyway, why not use them to discover a cure for cancer, diabetes, etc?
