Strange events
« on: August 14, 2009, 05:16:14 PM »
I was going through my images/ff4 directory earlier and found this. I don't remember if I ever posted it before or not, I don't even remember taking it, but it's a screenshot from Zyrthofar's map viewer:

I know why I took it though. Note that even at the bottom center. It's perfectly placed to be an exit. With the overworld design what it is in the final version, walking out of the tower wouldn't work so well, but maybe the tower was accessible on land at some point like in the underworld?

There's also this mysterious woman embedded in the wall of the Red Wings' quarters:

IIRC, it probably would have been connected to part of the Rubicante area at the back, but that area is totally incomplete if you walk-through-walls around the trap to the Underground....

No, I don't think so, this is on the first floor, and that's at the top. The door in the crystal room works fine from what I remember, and puts you out on the other side like you'd expect. I'm pretty sure the door back there takes you to the same place as the normal exit door does. I've got screenshots of those too, but I figured everyone here would already know about them, so I didn't post those:

It's worth mentioning that The After Years makes use of the crystal room, but you still don't get to go out that door (you do see it, so it taunts you even more than the original!).

I was talking more about the incomplete back door of the Rubicante floor... the Crystal Room's back door does teleport you to the back location, but that's a one way trip...

There's a good chance that you would not have been able to pick up the Crystals (maybe you were meant to talk with them), but you would also fall down there and perhaps through the "hidden exit" for better show.

Edit: NM, the eyes imply you are going upstairs, so that wouldn't be the case. Oh well. Perhaps the incomplete back area of Rubicante was meant to be the trapdoor.... otherwise it is there for show or maybe it was intended to be a passage to the Giant of Babil, but was never finished.

Talk to her yet to see what she says?

And do you know if Zy ever updated his editor?  I'm really needing a map/event editor so I can start doing my complete new game using FF4 as a base.

No idea, I was never able to get in touch with the guy (not that I've really tried since then). Give Phoenix's map editor a try:

The only major events AFAIK in Baron would be the following:

1) Initial DK Cecil

2) Paladin Cecil in empty castle

3) Gotten Enterprise

4) Attach Hook To Enterprise

5) Big Whale (before and/or after) and Odin (before and/or after)

That should cover most of it, so go figure.

It would seem to be the most accessible during the Paladin Cecil phase of the game.

Sorry to burst your bubble on two points, but: on the first map you posted, but it's likely that they used that trigger tile at the bottom of the map because it's the only one that is shaped like that. Check out the tileset and you'll see what I mean.

Secondly, the map viewer seems to get that NPC set wrong for the Baron room. There's not a woman there, but a "Zzz..." sleeping bubble. You can verify it in the actual data, but I attached a screenshot as well.

I do have good news to balance out my bubble-bursting, though: I'm working on updating all three of my javascript tools (map editor, event editor, dialogue editor). The map editor especially should be much more useful. I'll post it here for testing whenever I finish it. Shouldn't be more than a week or two.

Someone should steal the sleep bubble (hint: MAKE IT SO).

Ah, yeah, I had completely forgotten about the bubble being there. Zyrthofar's viewer is nice, but it's not 100% perfect yet, and it does get some of the sprites and palettes wrong (plus fails in general when dealing with the 4BPP graphics). I didn't even think about that tile being the only one of its kind, I should have too, since I had the entire tileset in front of me.

Heh, good news about your editors getting updated. I'm kind of sitting on the fence here, part of me really wants to port my enhancement hack over to FF4 Advance, and part of me knows there's a lot more I can do with the SNES version. I suppose I could make two separate hacks, but I don't think I could find the motivation for that.
