FFIV Solo Challenge Patches (Starting with Child Rydia)
« on: December 28, 2013, 10:36:03 PM »
A while back I played JCE3000GT's Solo Cecil Patch and I really did enjoy the concept of that. I always like when games give you the chance to have a solo member go through the entire game. I've always been partial to Child Rydia as a character with the ability to use White Magic, Black Magic, and Summon Magic and playing through the game solo as her gives you an entirely new respect for some of the lesser used magics. But the stretch in which you can play a game "solo" as any other character is a bit... limited.

Cecil - Whole Game
Kain - Start-To Mist - Underground Start-Underground Finish - Final Moon Trip-End
Rydia - Kaipo-Leviathan Attack - Underground-End
Edward - Damcyan-Leviathan Attack
Rosa - Kaipo Revisit-Battle of Fabul - Tower of Zot Finish-End (probably the longest character to stick around)
Yang - Mt. Hobbs-Leviathan Attack - Baron-End of Babil1
Palom - Mysidia-Cagnazzo
Porom - Mysidia-Cagnazzo (Edward and the Twins really don't get much face time in battle)
Cid - Troia-Underground Start (Cid gets two Dungeons)
Edge - Eblan Passage-End
FuSoYa - End of First Moon Trip-End of Giant of Babil

These characters all have interesting abilities and different strengths and weaknesses but you don't often get to see these in the game itself. So my goal is to make a Challenge Patch for each character to go through the game Solo. And in the end for some the question will be, "Is it possible to do so?"

With the initial patches released my plan then is to make a special patch, originally you will notice next to no changes in the game itself, but in future patches (Probably will have a + by the patch name) the game will be made more in-mind for the specific characters so you won't be getting a bunch of Dark Armor you can't equip anyhow. But I want to release a "pure game" patch set first before doing that.

So first of these will be Child Rydia.

Issues: Now because this is stepping outside of the game's comfort zones there was one or two things that I've noticed that aren't... quite right.

The only thing I have noticed off the top of my head is that when Edward goes back to mourn Anna he will be Mini because he is not actually part of the party. And every Special Battle will have Rydia as the party, no matter how absurd it may seem.

One last note, everybody will call Rydia... well Rydia. This will look odd in text in... certain places. I wasn't going to go through the script and change every instance of him to her and he to she after all, but this isn't a story based hack in the first place so its not that big of a deal.

Now this is for an Unheadered Rom of v1.1 make sure to patch it to that.

Please, give me your thoughts and suggestions.

First one to download!

This is pretty cool; I'll definitely check it out. I definitely hear what you are saying about leaving the "comfort zone;" I too often wrestle with a similar problem when I sketch out my hack. I'm glad you figured out about Cecil's forced leadership - that's very useful! I wouldn't mind including a few scenes without him; but of course then I'd have to write one.

You're right that it's a bit odd thinking about the auto-battles; but it won't throw me in playing.

Thanks! I also have the Kain version all but prepared and I have to say, his game is an absolute Joke. He goes through the game with relative ease (though there are a few trouble spots) I expected that him being confined to the Spear for the first part of the game would hurt him, but no... he absolutely murders everything, Jump is just so powerful. Now that I have all the kinks worked out of it, I can probably start releasing these in bunches rather than piecemeal.

Oh right! One more "glitch" I should mention, because the Character is always 01, the beta-script for Yang is run instead of his normal one and you will be forced to defeat Yang (though I could change that if that proves too cumbersome for some characters).

 :hmm:

So then I'm going to be playing a little girl getting bonked in the head by a Monk wielding a Dark Knight's sword...

AWESOME!  :childish:

I tried these challenges years ago using savestate hacking.  Valvalis is a bottleneck for most characters.  Having the dummied battle items would be a big help.

Hmm, what makes Valvalis such a sticking point? I recall reading a Solo Cecil guide a long time ago who was very upset about how unfair Valvalis seemed because of Ray taking a character out of commission in a short time. This fellow didn't seem to be aware that Cecil could equip the Gaia Gear, or wasn't aware that the Gaia Gear prevented Gradual Petrification. Or is there more to it than that?

I went through the solo Cecil challenge a few times - I did forget about the Gaia Gear the first time around but even with it you can run into problems with Tornado. It just drags things out either trying to heal and keep up or make it out alive without an unfortunate Tornado/one-shot combo.

I agree that the dummied items would help, but I think it will be easier with Rydia than it was with Cecil just because you can't do as much damage as a function of level as Rydia can - at least with my strategy of sticking Cecil in the back row; it bogs him down but I can totally see Rydia+Virus FTW. I wish I could start playing rather than just speculating about it; not that this isn't fun as well.  :yabin:

Cecil was not a big problem due to the Gaia gear as mentioned...but there is also the problem of Tornado followed by a physical hit.  You'll probably need to use an evade set-up.  Attack spells won't be of much use, so you'll be relying on some poor attack power from a lot of characters.

That is a fair point... the physical characters like Cecil and Kain (Kain can always stay in the back, his game is mostly a joke) seem to have incredible (too high if you ask me!) physical evasion because of their equipment draw (mainly the shields) Also it seems that if you don't have any way to use Reflect you have no way of beating Asura alone, it appears?

Valvalis has high Magic Defense? I can't say I ever noticed because... you have no one with logical attack magic when you reach her.

I don't think you can damage Valvalis with magic.  It has been a long time since I tried this, so perhaps I'm misremembering.

I'm sure I've beaten Asura without reflect with solo characters before, but I can't remember if that was in this version of the game.  You can probably do it with Nuke.

You can hit Valvalis with Magic, she does have actual Magic Evasion because of her battle script giving it to her though, but its only moderate. She does have a decent magical defense though of 12x3 Multiplier which could weaken Level 2 Spells significantly.

This version of Asura is a little... insane without Reflect. She's so fast that you can never seen to get one turn to her two (maybe with a magic character you could use Slow) unless its Edge, maybe and in those turns she will use Cure 3, Cure 4, Physical Attack in that order. I tried defeating her with a Level 49 Kain and saw no way through that staunch defense.

Is that file compatible with FFIV Advance? Or is it just for FFII on SNES? I tried using it on the gba version and the game just stayed on the gbc screen

If it did anything with the GBA Version I would have been rather shocked! Yes, it is only for the SNES 1.1 version I'm afraid. The architecture of the GBA version is all but unknown to me, I'm sorry I can't really much on that front.

Alrighty. I tried it on the gba, and it did not work, so I thought I would ask.
