(Another) FF1 Hack

This is sort of a work-in-progress, so I'm open to suggestions.

So what is different in this hack? For one thing, all the character, weapon, armor, spell, and monster data has been re-done from the ground up. I tried to balance things as best I could.

In addition, there is no class-change. Rather, there are twelve classes selectable from the beginning. Some of the graphics for the classes look buggy on the character selection screen, but they are fine throughout the rest of the game.

The spells, weapons, and armors are more organized. There are now weapon and armor types, as there are in later Final Fantasy games. As well, there are four spell types, but each spell has two types: it is either black or white; and either red or time. Black represents offensive/attack magic, white represents defensive/healing magic, red represents direct magic, and time represents indirect magic. So as an example, FOG is an indirect defensive spell, so it is white and time. FIRE is a direct offensive spell, so it is black and red.

The layout of some of the dungeons have changed a bit. The overworld also has some differences, and as well the order of events is a little different, both in order to make the game a little less linear. For example, getting the KEY is now an optional side-quest.

There are also several completely new dungeons, and a total of eight elemental fiends (although you still only need to beat the original four to finish the game).

I moved the "circle of sages" from Crescent Lake to Coneria and had them give you advice about the game (such as what kinds of characters can equip what kinds of gear or cast what kinds of spells, and so on).

I applied a variety of bug-fixes (as many as I could find) such as the Monk armor bug, the elemental weapons bug, running, and so on. Although some bugs are still intact such as the House/MP bug, but as soon as I find a way to fix them I will.

I think some work still needs to be done on the monsters, especially in the late game. It seems like some of them are much too weak while others are much too strong.

Anyway, enjoy! Any comments or input would be greatly appreciated!

I may get around to testing the hack when I get a chance...

My table is getting full these days.

Sounds pretty cool, I'll give it a try when I'm in the mood to play FF1. I'm actually in the mood to hack FF1 right now, I just don't have the time, I haven't even done much for PB in the past...uh, long time.

I'm about to try this out...

EDIT: In my opinion, you should replace the big ninja sprite with FF3 NES's ninja, the scholar sprite should be used for the Time Wizard, and the FF3 NES sage sprite should be used for the Sage.
EDIT2: And if you want, you can base this off of my hack. I should include something like that in the next release. Like, "It's ok with me for you to use this as a base for your own hack, so long as you give credit where credit is due."

Well, the class selection screen is horribly broken. The second half of classes are all messed up, in terms of sprite and palette. Balance seems pretty good so far, though the equipment changes are taking me by surprise.

119 bugs fixed and counting.

I know. I wish I had a way to fix that... although there may not be one. The game was never meant to have more than six in the selection screen. Even if I could find a way to have it so the selection screen doesn't show you any sprites that would be better than the glitched-up ones there now. I haven't done much investigating on this issue since I've mostly been concentrating on functionality as opposed to appearance.

But the sprites work fine everywhere else.

Yeah, I have to admit the current Ninja sprite seems really out of place being the only buff-looking one in a cast of otherwise chibi characters. I'll probably replace him as you suggest with the one from 3. But I want to keep the Time Mage because it's one I drew myself using the black mage as a base. I wanted him to have the red star-hat to make it more consistent with the Time Mages from other FF games. As for the Sage, I think the Sage sprite from FF3 looks more like an Oracle to me... just a personal taste thing I guess.

Thank you for the offer! However I'm afraid that if I do that it will take forever to re-hack all the weapon/armor/spell/map/character data all over again. I was hoping to find individual patches for the various bug-fixes. And for most of them I was able to do that. In fact, the House/MP bug is the only major one I can think of off hand that I'd want to apply.

I don't think there's enough room in the pattern tables to get all the character class sprites displaying there unless it stores them differently than I'm thinking. I'm pretty sure all six sprites are loaded into memory at once, the best way to fix that I can think of would be to only have four sprites in memory, one for each character, and load the correct sprite every time you press left or right. Maybe someone competent with assembly (ie: Not me, I'm a terrible programmer ) could help you with that.

Getting the class selection dialog to support twelve classes is on my to do list for a hack I'm currently working on. However, it's only a small part of a much larger project, so there's no tellin' when it'd be done. Once I do get around to it, I'll be sure to let you know.

:bump:

I finally got around to giving this a try this evening, it's really good,  a lot more fun than the original FF1. I'm not finding the time mage to be very useful though, I'm thinking about restarting and taking a red mage instead before I get too far in.

Thanks for giving it a try!

I haven't had any problems with the time mage in my own testing. How far in did you get with him?

I'm at Elfland. He's surviving better than my white mage (Who died on me twice, in battles where no one else took any real damage) but I'm not finding the support magic to be very useful yet. I'll probably keep at it with him for a while, I can always make a copy of my save and see how it plays with a different party. I'm considering putting a copy of this on my DS flashcard and playing it in nesDS, could go with a different party in that rather than copying my save over.

My party: Paladin, Dark Knight, White Mage, Time Mage. My normal FF1 party is Warrior, Red Mage, White Mage, Black Mage. Occasionally I won't bother with the black mage and take a thief instead.

Yeah, it sounds like you have an already magic-heavy party between the Paladin, DK, and White Mage... although he might be a bit better in the late game when the Paladin and DK can't learn the higher level spells.

Is this being updated any time soon? This might go on the top of my list on what I'm going to play next (and maybe to that Dual Orb 2 FAQ that I've been putting off)?

Not likely to be updated soon. At least not unless there's some kind of glaring balance issue that can be fixed quickly. The only "major" issues that need to be adressed that I know of are the House/MP bug and the character selection screen junk, and I'm not expecting to find a fix for those any time soon.
